According to the UFC President Dana White (via MMAJunkie.com), Junior dos Santos will defend his title against Alistair Overeem sometime this summer. White revealed Alistair Overeem wants to take "some time off", while Junior dos Santos is still not fully recovered from the knee injury suffered in preparations for the UFC on FOX fight with Cain Velasquez.

The fight could serve as a perfect headliner for UFC's Fourth of July fight card, which has a history of blockbuster Heavyweight match-ups such as Lesnar vs. Carwin and Lesnar vs. Mir II:

"Hopefully this summer. This summer is probably when it's going to go down. Alistair wants to take some time off. Dos Santos is ready but needs to get some training in. So hopefully, this summer."

White also shared his thoughts about the match-up, claiming that it will go down to "who hits harder and who has the best chin":

"This is one of those fights where no matter where this ends up, it'll be exciting," he said. "But I see this fight standing up and finding out who hits the hardest and who has the best chin."

Junior dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem is expected to deliver high PPV numbers, despite the fact that both fighters are not representing USA. Dos Santos is a veteran of eight fights inside the UFC Octagon, while Overeem enjoys popularity among the hardcore fanbase in Europe and the USA.

Pure boxing goes to JDS. He has better striking and a powerful right hand. Alister is a good puncher but doesnt let it his hands go. When is the last time Alister knocked out someone..Years..

There is no way Alister can withstand a punch from JDS....

Alister will have to keep his distance and attack with kicks. If he can close the distance, then the knees will come in, but I think JDS will push him away and continue throwing that overhand right bomb until it takes effect....

I agree. But, as a fan of Overeem and a person who has watched him for years, he will lose to JDS.

really how did I know Reem wouldnt have to fight within those six months that he would be random tested, he can shut the **** up with that line that he is the most tested fighter.

Alistair KOd two of his last five opponents, the most recent of which was Todd Duffy about a year ago. Of the other three fights, two were brutal TKOs and one was a decision. His last five K-1 record is identical, 2 KO 2 TKO and 1 Decision. He has plenty of recent KOs.

A knockout refers to being hit (usually in the head) and as a result going unconscious.

other than maynard edgar 2... this is the only fight ever where i have no idea who i think will win...

1 minute i think overeem but then how can u count out JDS as he is 8-0 in the ufc with 6 finishes... no reason to doubt him at all....

im going to spend the next 6 months trying to work out who has an edge...

Both have great standup, great use of wrestling in reverse and solid BJJ.....

next 6 months? just watch allistars fights with shogun, chuck, and kharitonov (the one that he lost). then whatch his fight with werdum. you can change your physic and your fighting style, but it is very hard to change youre natural tendencies. the fight with werdum showed me that allistar is stil the same as always, all offense no defense. if he fights jds like he fought lesnar then its gonna be another quick ko for dossantos. i dont why every body is so torn about this fight. if allistar wins then mma makes no sense to me.

I heard, Overeem said he wants to "get back in there as quickly as possible" now we have to wait until July? 7 months, what a joke :/ they should sacrifice Mir to the Reem in the mean time :D

No kidding, summer? That's 6 months away. How about March, April latest. Kind of takes all the momentum out of it. I agree feed Mir to Overeem in the meantime. I would love to see that destruction!

Why? So we can watch Overeem keep a 10-foot distance and run scared every time the fight hits the ground like he did against Werdum?

Summer is a joke, we need to see a fight with Overeem soon (March/April). He has just entered the UFC now we have to wait 6/7 months to see him again. But i do think Valesquez would be better fight for Overeem as he is another good stricker and wrestler. And he would enter his next fight with something to prove, something that will make that fight very entertaining. Although I would like to see Mir fight as well, I expect Overeem will wait for JDS and Mir will end up fighting Valesquez.

Alistair Overeem has been suspended until February 14, with no contact until January 30 due to cuts near his right eye.

Mir vs Cain and Cain vs Carwin would be a good fight.

I agree that Barnett is probably the most underrated best HW on the planet. His wrestling is over the top plus experience . He can beat JDS and Cain in no time.

Anyone think Overeem might be on a 1payday per fight contract and he can go else where in the meantime ???

Very suspicious that he wants time off.... Might want to fight K1 or in JAMMA.

Not My Opinion but all that haters might say he wants to Juice up and then clear his system out by the summer?

JDS is my favorite hw but i still like the reem but the reems chin isnt the greatest , i think overeem will attack from distance with kicks but the speed of jds will help him catch the reem for a a tko either late first rd or early 2nd .

Sorry guy but Overeem is going to have a fight on his hands in this one! I don't see JDS losing the belt to Overeem! Especially when he just got it in a fight that most did not think he would win! Overeem will have to work real hard to get this one if he wants it because he is fighting a young man with a lot of drive and talent!

Barnett the best on the planet?! Don't kid a kidder. True champions don't resort to roids to beat competition.

The Reem on roids?! In the justice system we live in everybody is innocent until proven guilty. He has never been tested positive so shut the f.ck up or try something that juices up your brain for better thinking performance, if possible at all.

Wait for this fight untill summer? Man, that sucks. JDS does not appear as hungry anymore since he's earning champion's bucks. There was a time when he would risk his no 1 title contention just to stay active and make money. But then again, all good things come to those who wait. Let's just hope we don't have to wait for too long.

What do you mean JDS doesn't appear to be hungry anymore. He just won the belt f*ck tard. There hasn't really been any attention at him. Since he won the belt. Save judgement after he defends his

Title cause i see himm being around for a long time.

Winning the belt doesn't warrant hungryness. Fighting as much as possible does.. I also stated it appears to me he's less hungry. No need to cry about it bucky. If memory serves me right JDS was the number 1 title contender after manhandling Roy Nelsen. Then Velasquez got injured. Rather than having to wait for months JDS took the fight scheduled with Brock risking his number 1 contender spot. Now that is what I call hungry, without judging anybody, except you being retard.

Overeem will take this to the ground and try to ground n pound. As great a striker as he is, he still has a glass jaw, and with JDS' aggressive nonstop advancing style, he will he clipped sooner or later in on the feet, no matter how good his defenses on the feet are. Overeem is has good BJJ and will not be afraid to grapple with JDS, which is why he will take it to the ground.

Not betting on this one, but if you put a gun to my head, I'd drop on JDS

Jds will punch, Reem will knee ; Jds will sleep, reem will eat...-

    I am optimistic

The Reem's adventure in UFC isnt only for the belt. he will take it from JDs easily, cos this one is a sparrin match for reem,

Overeem will wake up all the HW hierarchy for a while.

the Reem is now a big pro.

He changed all his preparation, and his Gym just before the fight vs Lesnar, his first UFC fight ? No impact, no effect !

He sent Lesnar, the hugest guy in UFC, sitting on the mat in less than 3 mn. ( I read an article about Lesnar and his biggest motivation to face Overeem) if this is a striker vs striker like people say it is

: reem has something more, the dutch kickboxing. He will finish JDs more quickly than Lesnar, cos he will be much more prepared for the title bout. and what iff reem lands on top of jds on the ground i dont see jds gettin out of that

May be one problem : when overeem gets hard punch, he looses his will to fight : hari, bonjasky, kharitonov, and In the past shogun, feitosa ...

But i feel he upped his comfort level in getting hit. see Spong-overeem when he was clearly hit many times and he fought through it. Ok spong isn't Jds,But i see an easy win with total domination cos overeem is ready and has better skills.and is simply stronger

the only chance jds goth is a fast ko with a nice timed hook

But he needs to be albe to nutrilize the reach of overeem and than means come close to his knee (lol)

Jds will punch, Reem will knee ; Jds will sleep, reem will eat...-

    Nice one coolbreeze.

Except Spong is even better than JDS in strickt stand up comparison.

Also Bigfoot would be better than JDS imo.

Overeem has trained himself with Saki Gokan. He is not afraid of any striker any more.Except from the great FEDOR who becomes a total striker!!
