UFC's return to England headlined by Chris Leben and Mark Munoz
Posted on July 19, 2011, 04:25 PM by Ryan VenturaThe last time top caliber MMA action was showcased in "Jolly Ol' England" was UFC 120: Bisping vs. Akiyama. Nearly a year has passed and finally the Ultimate Fighting Championship will be making it's return to the great fighting nation. UFC 138 (on November 5th) will be headlined by "The Crippler" Chris Leben taking on "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" Mark Munoz at the LG Arena in Birmingham.
Official UFC 138 announcement:
"Two of the middleweight division's heaviest hitters will go to war in the UFC's first ever non-title 5 round main event as the 'Filipino Wrecking Machine' Mark Munoz takes on Chris 'The Crippler' Leben at UFC 138 November 5th in Birmingham, England," said UFC President Dana White of the historic matchup.
Leben has won four of his last five bouts, including finishes of Aaron Simpson, Yoshihiro Akiyama, and Wanderlei Silva. Munoz is on a similar hot streak, having beaten Aaron Simpson, CB Dollaway, and Demian Maia in successive bouts.
The card which will be aired in the United States on Spike and in Canada on Rogers Sportsnet will also feature a Batamweight bout between Brad Pickett and Renan Barao. Keep it on lock with Lowkick.com for all the latest event updates in the world of Mixed Martial Arts!

could be really exciting, or could be munoz reverting to wrestling, hopefully leben doesn't let that happen either way, definitely want him to win.
So its another free British UFC card with a bunch of unknown British fighters and a sub par middleweight match up. Only thing worse is that Bisping could be headlining.
Striking - Munoz has power in his hands and has improved his striking tons and in my opinion more technicial than Leben, but Leben definetly has a big advantage in striking. He has the power to knockout anyone out and from different posistions. He will take a few hits to give one out, Munoz has a lot of power but I don't know if he has enough to take advantage of this.
Grappling - Biggest differnce in the fight is here and it is in favour of Munoz. This may be the x factor of this fight, if he can take Leben down he may very well win and I think it is very doubtful Leben can stop Munoz's takedowns.
Athleticism - Goes to Munoz from being a stud wrestler and also just fight footage.
Cardio - Munoz for his work ethic and he always is going strong to the final bell.
Chin - Definetly goes to Leben, watch any of his fights (except Brian Stann). Munoz was rocked early against Maia who is notorious for poor striking, although Maiai's striking is much improved. Leben has only been KO'd by an unstoppable Briant Stann and Anderson Silva on his UFC debut.
Power - Munoz is known for his strength but Leben is even more noted for his striking power, Leben has tenfold the power of Maia and Maia was getting the better of Munoz in the standup, if Leben connects it could be a short night.
Speed - Munoz, all round fast fighter.
Heart - Goes straight to Leben, see Leben vs. Akiyama, Leben will only give up when he is unconsious or about to be.
Submissions - While Leben has 6 submisions and Munoz only has 1 due to punches I think this skill is so close between the fighters it won't matter. Leben has showed a bit of nice BJJ while Munoz has showed some slick BJJ defence especially against submission magacian Demian Maia. Munoz has also been working a lot with BJJ 5th degree blackbelt Ryron gracie a lot, pushing his BJJ level up in leaps and bounds.
In the first I think Munoz will push Leben up against the cage, wear him down and hit him with some close punches and maybe drag him down, pin him against the cage and get some big hits in. In the 2nd and 3rd I see it playing out on the feet for a while with both fighters exchanging strikes untill Munoz securing a takedown from close range and putting some heavy ground and pound to work, or as Munoz would say "dropping bomb". Leben may get up but the same as before will ensue.
In this fight I can see Munoz getting semi rocked and taking Leben down at least once. I also feel that Leben will ethier throw up a triangle or attempt some sort of armlock (most likely a kimura) while Munoz has hime down.
The fight will be competetive and Leben will make Munoz work for his takedowns and pressure him with strike.
Munoz by decision.
UFC First 5 round non title fight and they put Chris Leben no offence hes one of my favourite fighters but this fight does not need to be 5 Rounds
Thats why they made it 5rounds
i see this as being a pretty exciting match up
Ya but you know what the ufc has 15 ppv a year and they have 7 weight divisions. I just think that there should be a belt on the line if the want to make it a ppv
I can still see the odd one but this is just them intentionally not putting one on the line cuz they know they still can move tickets in the uk
its not a PPV its a Fight Night
sorry its now a PPV, they changed it or somene reported wrong.
Munoz got k.o'd before if he stand up with leben, leben should k.o him him with easy
Nice, I'll be there. Been waiting to see Leben fight for a while. Didn't get to see him vs Bisping live. Awesome news. Munoz could make this a really boring fight if he wants to play it safe though.
Ground and Pound gameplan will be Munoz's best bet
I'm sure English fans are questioning why this is the Main Event....but at least they are getting a UFC in the UK this year (it was looking like it wasnt going to happen)
I've never really liked Mark Munoz, I think he's really being showcased purely because they feel they can make a buck off of him, but I honestly can't get behind Chris Leben. He can't freaking fights! yeah the knockouts are cool and all, but the thing that's truly holding UFC and MMA back isn't New York or wherever the hell else it's not legalized, it's because for every masterful performance from guys like Silva and Edgar, you have these head hunters going in looking like sloppy drunks, swinging with a wing and a prayer. You can get a knockout by actually being able to fight, not just by being lucky that the guy you're fighting can't move his head fast enough. Silva showed 5 years ago exactly what he thought about Leben's "striking" skills, and Leben hasn't gotten all that much better.
Leben has 2 Submission wins, and only 2 sub loses in 18 fights in the UFC. A recent fight with Akiyama he was really active from the bottom, and ended it with a perfect triangle choke, one of the best fights ever in my opinion.
7 tko/ko's all in the UFC, according to you all luck, His fighting history/record, is one that many fighters in the UFC dream they had.
To say he has not gotten better since Silva 5 years ago... Makes you sound DUMB.
If Mark is smart, he wont risk banging with Leben, Hopefully he will get the takedown and you can watch chris get back up, he is under rated when it comes to getting back to his feet and having a active guard.
This new 5 rounds non title fights worry me
fighters are already cautious in 3 rounds fights
imagine how they will "fight" knowing is 25 minutes fight.
This will just push guys to start making there "gameplans"
to adapt to 5 rounds ,making fights possibly (more)boring.
Leben shoulda waited for Belfort like he said he would,I feel like he's taking a step back facing Munoz, yes Munoz has won a few in a row, blah, blah, whoever replies to my comment stfu! so like I was saying Leben should only fight top 5 guy, this is a decent fight but not main event fight,I feel like England got robbed again, thanks Dana douche!!!!
I can't wait to see the price of the tickets, if I see standard tickets going for anything more than £50 ($70) i'm not paying that. Those tickets won't be on the market long anyway. The UFC are taking fu**ing piss with prices they charge for UK shows with average cards I had to pay £175 ($245) to see Rampage v Heno which was worth it, but since then the cheapest tickets i've seen are £100 ($140). They can't keep dong this for ever, were pissed about a lot of thing in the UK right now, the UFC don't want to be added to the list.
Not the best card but should still be good. When will tickets go on sale as I fancy going.
Bombs away!
A UK card without Bisping, how dare they!!
