UFC plan to counter Strikeforce: Nashville on April 17th

Rumors have been emerging of late that the UFC are planning to air an event on April the 17th. This sounds innocent enough but the problem is that this is the same night as the highly anticipated Strikeforce: Nashville on CBS show, featuring Dan Henderson vs Jake Shields, Mousasi vs 'King Mo' and Melendez vs Aoki.

It would seem that the UFC would have to put on a big show to get fans to watch the event which would be aired on Spike. According to f4wonline by taking a small portion of Strikeforce's viewers the UFC may 'lose on the night but win overall.

As if this battle of the MMA giants for ratings wasn't enough another twist has emerged. Info from Sherdog stated that 'The venue for the proposed UFC event has not been settled upon, though speculation centers upon Vanderbilt University's Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.

With a possible bout between Swick and Serra out of the question because of Swick needing arm surgery it seems the UFC may use the event as James Toney's debut. So the possibility remains that Dana White may use one of the biggest ratings draws in UFC history, Kimbo Slice (like it or not its true), to battle against Strikeforce in April.

If they keep going head to head I don't think Strikeforce has big enough names to keep up with the UFC

ya, i think UFC is a little over their head with this cause most of their big fighters are already in other fights and they don't really have enough left to compete with mousasi, henderson n aoki

I agree, I would rather watch the Strikeforce card...For ME, Kimbo lost his appeal in the TUF show...The UFC has to come up with a really competitive card to distract our attention for the SF event...

true, but he knows full wel that he wont be able to beat strikeforce on the night...its like the article said he'll lose on the night but win overall....his plan is probably to undermine strikeforce more than anything and do damage longterm, and considering strikeforce are his main competition u can hardly blame him...this is bad for strrikeforce doh

dana should be ashame of himself!

he try to do the same with aflicction!

he first ruin the MMA world when he buy and vanish PRIDE!

then puts shitty cards on the UFC i mean a main event and co main event! and the other ones are just weak!

i mean pride used to have like 3 potential main events and like 4 potential co main events!

the UFC uses like 4 big names in 2 fights and thats it!

now when another org like strikeforce is becoming decent!

hes atacking it! fans deserve another OPTION to watch MMA!

when the ufc comes with cards like ufc 105 , 106 , 108

fuk you dana!! strikeforce shall rise!

im watching strikeforce on april no matter what !

and if is HYPE KIMBO im not watching the ufc event at all!

Jokeforce isn't doing anything but tanking. If people want to watch Strikeforce, they'll watch, the UFC has no control over that. It's a free market, and unfortunately for jokeforce there is only a small fringe group of people who want to watch a HW champion not-fight, while people like Lashley and Hershel Walker fight bums.

UFC are too money hungry, i mean if strikeforce can make contracts with henderson, aoki, fedor etc.. how come UFC can't? its time to start paying fighters for what their worth. They are willing to break the bank for freakshows such as brock lesnar but not real mma fighters.

Let's face it. Hendo isn't the same draw in the UFC that he is in Strikeforce. In Strikeforce, he's at the top of the chain, he'll beat shields and be champ. In the UFC, his record wasn't the greatest. He barely beat Franklin, he knocked out Bisping (and I loved every minute of it!). In Strikeforce, he'll be their version of the p4p best in the world.

Once again I have to point out that when it came to Fedor, they gave him everything he wanted except co-promotion. 30 million for 6 fights is unheard of. That is called "Breaking the bank". With that much money, why should they have to co-promote? Because Finklestein is a greedy ****er, that is why. Watch, Strikeforce will buckle under the financial burden placed on them by M1 and those fighters will be finding their way to the UFC at a much lower pay scale.

O.K. Strikeforce got contracts for top name fighters like fedor, aoki, henderson etc...but where are the top name opponents for them? The UFC is to stacked to really worry about the 5 fighters SF has, its like comparing HOME DEPOT, to your lil local hardware store, the only one that is still in business.

The same stupid people who want co-promotion are the stupid people who make these dumb claims. The reason other organizations fail and are bought so easily by the UFC, is because they run stupid business models.

When Jokeforce fails, guess where the 2-3 worthy fighters will move to?

The Greedy one, is DW, this is not good for the sport, with only one big promotion a lot of fighters will be left out, and DW will be able to pay them what he wants and not what they are worth, DW is trying to Muscle SF out, and that my friend it is bad thing for the sport.

Anyways, I think w/e dana does is never bad for the sport/business. The sport and business is sometimes one in the same. You have to give him his props. White knows how to run and promote a business... He has brought the sport this far.

Yes, DW wanting the organization to make money is why there is a sustainable MMA market. Other major organizations means only that you have to co-promote, and if you like having fake-champions everywhere, people like Overroids who never compete, then that's what you're asking for.

This is a post from http://ringpsychology.wordpress.com/2009/07/30/details-of-the-ufcs-offer-to-fedor/ that lists the details of the offer made to Fedor.

Carmichael Dave, a CBS radio host and one of Dana White’s favorites in the media, posts on Sherdog about the details of the UFC’s offer to Fedor. Place your hand under your jaw before it drops:

    - The UFC offered Fedor a 6 fight, 30 million dollar contract. That’s 5 mil a fight

    - The UFC offered Fedor an immediate title shot

    - Lesnar/Fedor would be the biggest PPV in MMA history (we assume), and the UFC offered M-1 Global a cut of the PPV on top of Fedor’s purse.

    - Fedor was free to wear as many M-1 logoed items as he wished.

    - The UFC also relented on allowing Fedor to compete in combat sambo.

Apparently, for good or bad, M-1 refuses to sign a deal unless the UFC agrees to co-promote.

are you stupid? you think they going to pay fedor 30million when they pay other top fighters 1% of that amount? that would be a slap on the face to every other fighter. Stop listening to every lie that comes out of Dana's mouth... If he was offered 30 million then how come StrikeForce managed to sign him, you really think StrikeForce made a better offer?

watch the video below and stop listening to Dana White, listening to Dana Whites insight on mma is like listening to Fox news about whats happening outside of america.

Yes you're right, there is no way that Jokeforce offered a better contract. Anyone who thinks Fedor is making more money than he would be in the UFC, is a damn idiot. So why did he take the Jokeforce contract then? You were saying something about people being stupid?

we are hearing what Dana White says he offered.

I wish everyone that has anything to do with fight promotions would shut their fu**ing mouths about talking about who they are, and how they are, the people's promoters. Fedor wants to fight Lesnar, he said he would do it for free. The only thing stopping the fight is Dana White's wallet won't get big enough. Go train to fight Tito again you fat aerobics instructor.

It would be illegal for him to lie about the contract. And if Fedor wanted to fight real competition, he wouldn't be in Jokeforce where nobody with more than 3 brain-cells would suggest that he is making more money than the alternative.

This kind of reminds me of why Microsoft made Xbox. They were afraid of sony and nintendo replacing/pushing there way in the computer market share through video gaming.

Speaking of which, some phone companies think nintendo is trying to take some of their share when they made Nintendo DSi or at least making a step towards that direction.

Anyways Microsoft has been losing tons of money from the xbox consoles, but has stole some video game share. Which keeps companies like sony and nintendo from making as much as they usually would. Overall Microsoft is benefiting from this a whole lot.

Reading this article, this is kind of what is happening between UFC and Strikeforce. UFC plans on stealing some views and it is a double whammy win if they actually beat strikeforce in the amount of views. There really isn't much Strikeforce can do, but make sure the double whammy win doesn't happen... and maybe fire back at them by doing the same thing when UFC has a event coming up.

Note: I know this is a little off topic, but I'm definitely getting a limited edition color Nintendo DSi XL when it comes out.

You do realize they are losing more money than ps3 despite the fact they have barely sold more and have not even come close to selling more than wii? Sells: ps3 is about 34 million units, wii about 67 million units, and xbox360 about 39 million units. As a side note, xbox360 has been out longer...

Anyways the point was, microsoft and ufc benefit from these type of things. Even if they lose money.

StrikeForce MMA will rise cause its only 19.99 to subscribe to super channel fights for a month to watch the 1 or 2 events for no extra charge.

They do have big names like Wes Sim, Bobby Lashly, Henerson, Fedor ect..... I love how they have women fight to, they have such great women fighters.

UFC is going to go down in the future cause its too expensive. 80 dollars on ppv for maybe 1 or 2 good fights and bullshit after that.

To watch at the stadiums its 400+ for a ticket. To sit with Coutor and others ufc fighter at the front you are looking at 1000+ for a ticket.

With our bad econamy these events should not be this mind blowing exspensive. and in sooner or later the ufc is going to get there asses kicked.

What annoys me about this most of all is that Dana White wants to show his superiority not by going head to head with Strikeforce in putting up great fight cards at the same time, but that he wants to do it by skimming away some viewers from Strikeforce to mess with their income on the long term and to mess with their CBS contract (which I think is a great contract for fans of MMA and it really pushes the sport into mainstream if we can keep it). So it is not a matter of who has the best fighters or the best cards, it is who has the money to outlast the other in a financial war.

I like having the two organisations around, it makes for more interesting cards in the year. As a fan of the sport I want to see the two organisations duke it out in appeasing the fans and fighters with great cards and fights. Not undoing some of the great advancements the sport has made by trying to put a financial stranglehold on another organisation and force them out of mainstream media contracts.

Just curious what great advancements you are attributing to Strikeforce? There should be many many MMA organizations, as their already are, but the rest are farm-teams. Triple-A ball. Co-promotion only hurts the sport. It will mean Overroid non-champions and psuedo champions who don't compete because they're not locked down. This gives people like Overroids the ability to use any foreign event anywhere as an excuse to dodge a title defense or a drug-screening for even longer.

Also the reason the UFC has the money is because they have the audience is because they've spent a decade creating a market. Strikeforce would not exist were it not for the work done that they coasted in on. Organizations cannot be muscled out in the ratings if people want to watch them. Strikeforce has had a few great fights, and I'm looking forward to seeing Melvin in the UFC, but there's no question as to where the elite are fighting. The rest have either fled the UFC, were cut, or couldn't make the UFC in the first place.

They won't drug-test Lashley their new roid-goon... Fedor should not be fighting Werdum, and it's not even for the belt. 2nd fight, and the greatest ever still doesn't get a shot? A shot at the damn Strikeforce belt?... It's a farce buddy... IMHO.

When Strikeforce tanks, like the rest, we will get to see Fedor and the few worthy Strikeforce fighters in the UFC facing real competition. Which will be good for MMA (but Fedor probably won't get the same contract offer when his options are so limited, he should jump ship while he can).
