UFC scraps Lyoto Machida fight; Chael Sonnen rumored to face Brian Stann in OctoberPosted on July 6, 2011, 07:22 PM by Joey Santosus
Top Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen will have to look elsewhere for a "tuneup fight," as the rumored bout between himself and former Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida has reportedly been scrapped.
This according to sources who tell MMAJunkie.com that, while the promotion briefly considered the match-up, it ultimately did not materialize.
Sonnen (25-11-1) recently completed his CSAC mandated suspension, freeing him up to apply for a fight license in any state he wishes to compete in. The suspension was initially handed down by the California State Athletic Commission following Sonnen's failed attempt at dethroning division Champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117.
After a dominant performance by the Team Quest fighter ended in a last minute submission victory for Silva, insult was added to injury when the commission announced Sonnen had tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone. To further compound his troubles, Sonnen successfully had the penalties reduced through appeal, only to be served with an indefinite suspension in May when the testimony he provided at the hearing was found to be falsified. Though the suspension concluded last week, Sonnen may still face an uphill battle in re-obtaining his fight license, primarily in the UFC's home state of Nevada.
According to Heavy.com, meanwhile, sources close to the promotion indicate that the former title challenger will instead face surging contender Brian Stann at UFC 136. The card, which has also been rumored to feature Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III, is expected to take place October 8th from the Toyota Center in Houston.
It's a convenient venue to host Sonnen's return, as Texas is notorious for their lax athletic commission. Whether or not this is an attempt at bypassing the potential licensing hassles that may very well lie ahead for Sonnen is open for debate, however UFC President Dana White has always adamantly denied partaking in any type of "commission shopping."
Neither the match-up, nor the event, has been officially announced at this time. Keep it locked on LowKick.com for more information as it becomes available.
