UFC on Versus 3 Results: Diego Sanchez survives the Nightmare, defeats Martin Kampmann via Unanimous Decision
Posted on March 3, 2011, 10:46 PM by Anton GurevichFrom "The Nightmare" to just a "Dream", former UFC Lightweight title challenger Diego Sanchez survived Martin Kampmann's perfect first round, fighting his way back to victory during rounds two and three.
Kampmann was clearly the better man during the first minutes of the fight, landing crisp striking combinations, and defending all of Diego Sanchez's takedown attempts. Sanchez was bleeding from his mouth, looking completely out of his gameplan against the crafty Dane.
However, Sanchez managed to adjust his gameplan in round two, emphasizing more on his striking. Kampmann was still displaying a highly impressive takedowns defense, but this time he was wobbled by Sanchez, who executed a perfectly-timed combination. Sanchez made a statement at the end of the round with a flurry, hurting "The Hitman" once again.
Sanchez continued to attack in Round 3, with more strikes and takedown attempts. But this time Kampmann was highly effective as a counter-striker in Round 3, once again with a great takedown defense, knees and sharp boxing.
In the end, the judges called it 29-28 (two rounds to one) in favor of the busted up Diego Sanchez, who improves his MMA record to 23-4. It's a second consecutive victory for "The Dream" who now looks one stop closer to being in the mix for the UFC Welterweight title shot.

kampmann!!!
kampmann indeed, when he fought nikolai valuev ha
Yeah Kampmann was robbed again.
You cant look like diego did after a fight and say you won. Unless you tap out or knock out a guy.
I think diego belongs in the lightweight division!!!
should clear this up. But Im pretty convinced Kampmann had the upper hand. Apart from two of Diegos punching rants where they just traded toe to toe Kampmann had the best landed punches. And look at diegos face, Diegos face looked worse last night then after the BJ Penn fight.
definately!
I cant see him beating fitch penn kos gsp or alvez .
Him vs the winner of the hardy fight would be good, but he could be in trouble against either of them if he cant get it to the ground!!
are just giving away the fact that your scared of the outcome. A little bird told me it kampmann landed a lot more then sanchez... WOOT WOOOOT!!
UFC and the Athletic commission should do something about the scoring system NOW! Im tired of this judging problem, its bullshit and shouldnt happen in whats supposed to be the best fighting league of mma in the world.

Compustrike means nothing... check out the arguements on the 100s of other threads about it.. Judges are there for a reason instead of computer judges sooooooo. I wouldnt make a decision based on that. I havent even watched the fight yet but when I do I'll post how I think it should've gone. But all in all compustrike is not a VALID means of scoring a bout.
threads or forums have divided people. Ive encountered entire sites that only argue kampmann won. Lowkick is hardu a reference. Look at the fight frame by frame if you want. Those numbers are correct. Stop lying to yourself and OPEN YOUR EYES!
Nice!
They obviously gave it to diego because he was alot more aggresive and was going after him nonstop the whole fight...diego won that fight!!!
people like you are the mma judges. thats the most simple minded way you could judge a fight. you got to break it down alot more than that when it comes to close fights like this. and if you actualkly think deigo 100% deserved that win then you are no better than them
well i guess me and the majority of the people commenting agreeing with me are no better haha calm down and get over it Lmao :D
why are you telling me that like i care how a fighter i dont even know face looks after a fight Lmao but im sure the 160,000 will mak him forget about it haha
Here comes the whining! Not to mention the fact that many of you here, have to always repeat EVERYTHING either Dana or Joe Rogan says.
Diego won this fight. Sanchez was destroyed in the 1st round but he kept coming forward and had Kampmann ROCKED in the 2nd and the 3rd!!
You could see the worry on Kampmann's face and he immediately withdrew and was cautious. Having his hand broken in the 3rd was just the icing on the cake.
...and this is coming from someone who had Kampann winning this fight before the fight began. I figured Kampmann would win by easy decision. Instead he lost by FAIR decision!
Okay so everyone repeats what Dana a Joe says? alright well Dana said Diego won, well apparently you repeat what Dana says to you dumbass
Kampman got robbed!!!! Besides lighting Sanchez up for 3 rounds he stuffed all but one takedown in a 3 round fight, and then he popped right back up! EFFECTIVE GRAPPLING! One of the scoring criteria!!! Sanchez lost!
@ jackthedrinker89, Reading and comprehension obviously aren't your strong suit.
My comment above was meant in the general sense as a whole when reading the posts on this board over a period of time.
...stick to drinking kid and feel proud of yourself!
haha i see you have to respond guarding the fact that didnt specify everything so just stfu and sit in wrongness kid you'll be fine im sure just take deep long breathes and you want feel bad anymore i promise
Diego's face disagrees with the decision
Correct!
lol its tru but he won he was the agrasor in rond 2 and 3
"DUH! He da agrasor! He win da fight DUH!" Learn how to spell and then learn about MMA scoring!
kampman was fighting and connecting all the time in all three rounds. just cause diego was walking forward more what does that mean. I mean how many points is that worth on the score card.
Doesn't matter how aggressive he was, Kampmann whooped his face to a pulp.
This is what they are going to call "he just Garcia the fight". Kampman won, although I would have been happy either way, i like em both. But Diego really seemed to be carrying a bit too much fat on him for this fight. I don't think bulking up to 195 then cutting down to 170 is a good idea.
Heart triumphs over technique, Diego definitely "earned it" tonight, the dream is for real
controversial decision........after seeing the destruction of Diego's face many people find it difficult to say he clearly won. No doubt it was an awesome fight to watch but tough one to call. If this went 5 rounds, it was a Kampmann win by doctor stoppage.
So if i turn ur face into hamburger meat the first round but come back and take rounds 2 and 3, then do u think i should win? That makes no sense as that would be 2 rounds for u to my 1. Ya you can use damage to score a fight only in a round, but if i get busted up in the first, its unlogical to say that I lost the fight.
and barely the third
or third
Kampman can only blame himself..wasnt aggressive enough should have tried harder to finish the fight..even tho diego's face is f**ked he was still trying to finish to the last second!
Thats retard. Kampman was aggressive that whole fight until he hurt his hand.
Watch it again or something
ForrestGriffin said on twitter
Topic for debate: attempting a TD is an offensive move, defending a TD is neutral. You do not get points for blocking a punch or moving out
Sure Forrest is right, but you also don't get points for missing punches...so...yeah.
However, pushing the pace and ring control probably did factor in with the repeated takedown attempts.
Diego has the heart, congrats to him but it a new wanderlei silva face :D! love Diego sanchez never seen him in a boring fight
Kampmann's fists are like tomatoes, juicing Diego's face all up.
When the **** did aggression suddenly mean the same thing as a win??
Did you see Diego's face after? He literally, nothing meant by it, 100% not kidding, looking like a Chinese man. Wow he got smashed the **** up, he MAY have won one round, **** that was just awful.
Kampmann outstruck him 97-45 and Diego was 1/15 on takedowns. God that was so awful, as many weaks as you want to won't change the feeling that Kampmann has now been robbed twice in a row :(
You're an idiot....Diego won so live with it Georgia boy....Kampmann only won round one and big... That's why Diego face looks all fu(c)ked up.... Yet Diego won round 2 and three.... So go cry next to Rogan... He had the Hitman winning from the first second the fight started.... Yet back fire......War Diego.
I think its like a the judges didnt score the takedown stops. Even the one time diego took him down he didnt do anything and kampmann was back up within seconds.
That counts for something in my book.
Kampmann was in control 90% of that fight
YOUR the freakin IDIOT. Check the stats numbers dont lie. 97-45 is the TRUTH YOU CANT HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
Idiots like you will only hold up any proper judging coming anytime soon to UFC. Kampmann clearly won that fight, he picked Sanchez apart sticking to technique to counter his aggression and he hit Sanchez ALOT more. If coming forward wildly and not getting KO'd and throwing in a few failed takedown attempts is regarded as better than crisp boxing with good footwork and good takedown defence and turning someones face to mush then yes Sanchez won. Makes a mockery of MMA.
JUST BECUZ U GET CUT EARLY IN A FIGHT DOESNT MEAN U LOSE. there is more to scoring a fight than the stats of what punches landed. Aggresiveness counts as well as other factors so to say "oh well kampman wins cuz he outstruck Diego" is a bunch of bull.. Yes he beat diego in that AREA, but not the whole fight
But theres only one way to look at it. overall offensive points which include takedown, ground granppling submission attemps and everything 66 kampmann 63 sanchez according to gith metric.
Even if you discredit fightmetric (cause you just dont wanna be told your wrong) it looked like diego stormed in an hit thin air most of the time and kampmann countered. That fight was all standup so SUCK IT warbitch!
I am pretty sure "agressiveness" is not part of the unified rules. And octagon control relates to grappling. The judges least critical judgement is on "aggressiveness". Not even sure how you would define that. I think maybe you should look up the rules. Nope he judges just suck. What about the Nick Ring fight? How did he win that? I think Rampage lost his fight too. The fight should be judged on how well the fighter performed and have a set of technical classifications defining that. Otherwise its pure bs.
Kampman was in control of that fight. He was being aggressive landing more strikes then the deigo. Who dumb do you have to be to say the guy who lands more strikes is less aggressive.
And what the dozen stuffed takedowns count for something? If anything they should count for kampmann.
YEP! ****ing gold man.
People seem to forget that, in English, when you put an adjective at the beginning of a list, it applies to every one of the items on the list.
"Based on effective striking, grappling, aggression and Octagon control."
=
"Based on effective striking, effective grappling, effective aggression, and effective Octagon control."
His aggression wasn't effective, neither was his control, if you could even call it that, the grappling was null null and Kampmann clearly won every second of the standup.
Another crap decision. Diego won round 3? I don't know. I was impressed how he came back with round 2 but 3 was pretty close. How many points do you get for stuffing a takedown? Kapman stuffed 14 takedowns. Wow. Probably didn't get a single point for it either. I think Kapman won but it was a decision. It wasn't as bad as shogun/machida or rampage/machida or man that nick ring call. But I bet Diego feels a bit worse formthe wear. Great fight.
Either way - it was a great fight; very entertaining; very competitive.
I picked Kampmann, but I gave it to Diego; regardless of Diego's face. It's another tough loss for MK, even though he had a great performance.I put the loss down to him spending too much time in reverse. If he'd come forward more in the second and third, he'd probably have won the decision. That's my guess, at any rate, as to why he failed to get the victory.
This fight & its outcome - is just another reason to have the top of the card be a five round contest. I think another two rounds in this fight would have been well worth it and would have rendered a better or cleaner decision. IMO - Diego and his love handles were beginning to fade. I don't think he could have kept it up another two rounds, where Kampmann seemed to still have gas in the tank; big advantage Kampmann going into rounds 4 & 5.
Overall on DS - he should move back to 155; he looked very soft last night, even though his conditioning (for a 3 round fight) was good enough to get him through, it. I don't see Diego being champ of 170, ever. However, at 155...I could see that.
i just dont know how you can give sanchez a win so he can fight even harder competition after a performance like that. i was not impressed with him at all. he was getting destroyed and demoralised in the first round, in the second and third the only thing he had going for him was brawling with kampman, and sure he landed some good shots but never without getting hit himself. kampman on the other hand landed lots of percicion strikes through out the whole fight and he stuffed i think all of diegos takedowns. this being said, i was not suprised by the desicion because judges seem to get fooled by people who brawl and move forward, look at lenard garcia. just because your moving forward does not mean your winning, there is such a thing called counter striking, these judges should look into it.
damn that face is a mess!
According to few comments above& current judges it seems that you can win a fight by just coming forward.
yep, Kampmann got no credit for hitting Sanchez far more on the back foot than Sanchez hit him. Pure b******t is a pretty accurate description of the decision and fighters really need to have some avenue to challenge idiotic judging of this magnitude.
Wow talk about horrible decision and judges that have never seen an MMA fight before, the probably actually didn't see the fights the same night before either because in that time they should have gained enough MMA knowledge to know Kampmann won that fight 30-26.
diego face= result of a slugfest
kampmann robbed again!!!!
He won the first two rounds clearly. Anyone who thinks Sanchez won the second take another look. Sanchez throws more punches but Kampmann lands probably twice as many clean shots, Sanchez missed with most of what he threw while Kampmann defended very well and was far more accurate with his punches.
UFC judging is a joke and I do pity kampmann who has now got 2 losses against him that he actually won IMO.
Agreed. But before you write arguments about MMA, you should learn some basic knowledge: THEY ARE NOT UFC JUDGES! Judging is not under UFC´s control.
i think kampmann has gotten robbed two times in a row now. seems like judges dont care about stuffing takedowns, only getting them. how many of diego's shots did kampmann stuff? diego only got one takedown the whole fight and you cant tell me that diego outstruke kampmann. theres no way a fighter who just bull rushes forward not landing any punches should be more rewarded than a technical fighter who picks his spots with accuracy.
Talk about a bunch of (i)diots... The blind teaching the blind......Look at Diego face....Look at Diego face....crying and bit(c)hing....Hitman lost... Get over it...Computer strikes...pffff. Computer also said Nate won his last fight and I didn't see anyone complaining about it......Penn won... Penn won....pfff he lost also to Fitch....
over here
i... like... your... dramatic... pauses...
s series on telemundo. VERY DRAMATIC!!
Diego is always a warrior, you can't say no to that
Wow what a great fight and great upset for Kampmann. Ya kampmann landed much cleaner counter punches in the first but he couldn't handle the heat sanchez was bringing in the 2nd/3rd. So as Diego started started flailing on him all he did was cover up and take it. Why didn't he just circle to sanchez's left and throw a straight right counter. Major disapointment for Kampmann who I thought was the better fighter but he just couldn't bring the heat and overcome adversity.Diego obviously wanted to win more which is why he win. I just wish that he'd thrown more uppercuts like he did against CLAY GUIDA.
UNBELIEVABLE!!!
Stupid idiot UFC writer in his frakin blind opinion of the fight in the above narrative. Which fight was he watching, "Diego adjusted his gameplan"? which gameplan was this writer named Stevie Wonder watching? Diego didnt get ONE takedown...All wrestling attempts were stuffed. Diego clearly lost the first round by getting knocked down by punch to the chin by the Hitman. The second round both fighters exchanged and there was 1takedown..excuse me..by Diego...didnt help...the Hitman got up within seconds...3rd round both exchanged but the Hitman injured his hand by splitting Diegos face wide open.
Well. i guess they gave Diego the fight for breaking Hitmans hand.
Might as well recall the BJ Penn fight and give it to Diego....
Freakin Pathetic
Diego will be good and scarred up by the time he fights all the rest of this class... He better quit while he is ahead and go back to lightweight....
MMA judging needs an overhaul. In a test of skill agression shouldn't count more than technique.
This look more like a test to see who is more marketable to the UFC and Diego won.
