UFC on FX 1: Jim Miller chokes out Melvin Guillard in Round 1
Posted on January 20, 2012, 10:20 PM by Anton GurevichTop UFC Lightweight contender Jim Miller re-claimed his spot in the mix for a shot at the title, after choking out Melvin Guillard after just two minutes in Nashville, Tennessee.
Melvin Guillard was the early aggressor, with clear intentions to knock out Jim Miller. After attempting a number of flying knees and high kicks Guillard managed to wobble Jim Miller, who was now forced to dig for a takedown. Guillard defended no less than three of Jim Miller's takedown attempts, but eventually found himself on the ground after Jim Miller finally got his gameplan going.
On the ground, it was all Jim Miller. Melvin Guillard managed to stand up for just a second, only to lose his back to the BJJ black belt Jim Miller. From there, it was a short way to body triangle and a Rear Naked Choke submission that forced Melvin Guillard to tap out for the ninth time in his MMA career.
Jm Miller (improved to 21-3) successfully bounces back from the loss to Ben Henderson, still hunting for a shot at the UFC Lightweight title. Jim Miller has a number of potential opponents on his radar, with Edson Barboza, Nate Diaz, and the winner of UFC 144 Pettis vs. Lauzon bout all looking to prove their worth as top contenders.
As for Guillard, "The Young Assassin" has a long way back to the top, after getting caught in what is now a two-fight losing streak.

melvin is a chump
What who are U!!..... Melvin has fought nothing but great fighters but for some reason 9 of last 11 loses were by choke he might need to work on that
you would think if all your loses since 04 were by choke you would have a better defence on it but all BS aside the guy is a great fighter instead of
working his stand up should do nothing but defend the choke and he could make one more run his stand up and wrestling is fine DEFENCE!..lol...not funny I blame coaches !!!!
haha love to see all the hate
maybe if melvin didnt wanna get taken down he shudnt be throwning flying knees and flying kicks he cudda knocked him out wit punches and picked his shots carefully he got reckless again and lost
Whitemare, I AGREE COMPLETELY!! 3 or 4 flying knee/kick attempts in the 1st round against a guy like Miller??U ****in kidding me, Melvin?!? Was in no was as patient as he said he would.Big ups to Miller he deserved it!
*way
Thank you !! discipline is the major aspect of any stand up game. He could of won if he was patient
should hook up with Pat Barry they coached him right had GREAT DEFENCE
These two guys are my favourite lightweights and are both some of the best and most dangerous guys in the division.
From the get go Guillard looked, as normal, unbeatable and outstanding on the feet. Melvin showed off his great TDD and stuffed JIm a few times. Everytime Miller throws anything I am in amazement at the speed and power.
As good as Guilalrd looked Miller toughed it out as always and wouldn't give up. He showed once again some sick BJJ and IMO cemented himself as the best sub guy at 155 (UFC).
Miller struggled on the feet but EVERYONE does against Guillard (Lauzon got a flash knock down). I think Miller should be next in line for the title shot, he lost to arguably #2 guy in the world who is fighting for the title but he fought sick.
I really think with his toughness, decent stand-up, great wrestling and amazing BJJ that MIller can be champ in 2012!
It pains me to see Guillard lose though, the dissapointment on his face made me feel bad for the guy.
He may have the biggest potential in the sport, his wrestling is great, crazy strength, one of the best athletes in MMA and has the best striking at 155.
I just hope he can finally put it all together and stop getting choked out on his way to the top. To be fair to the guy though he is being subbed by the best sub artists at 155.
Predictable i knew it if Melvin didn't KO Miller in the first few minutes
Miller would choke him out as always
you would think Melvin would improve his bjj at least for defense
but no , he will never get in the top 5 if he keeps the same
Look at Pat Barry on the other way avoid that arm bar very impressive
btw Miller claiming at the end that he is the most dangerous Light weight on the planet made me laugh hard , if he is claiming such a big statement then why did he got his ass kick in his last fight just a few months ago hu?
first get a couple of solid wins and then you can make some
reasonable statements !!
Good event overall btw glad FX shows the fights live and not replays like Spike used to do with fight nights
Miller didnt make any excuses when he fought Bendo, but he did have a Kidney infection at the time.
Just becauseyou are the most dangerous doesn't mean you are the best.
Dominick Cruz is one of the least dangerous fights in the top 10 BWs but he is still the best.
Pat Berry is funny at the end when he was planking lol! it would have been funny if he Planked on Morecraft.
Guillard vs Miller= the closest Striker vs Grappler matchup one can get these days. So the result was quite obvious (not 100% though)
I thought Gulliard was on his way to a title shot, until he fought Lauzon.
Will the UFC gatekeeper give him a top contender next time, or has he already achieved gatekeeper status?
GEEZ!
How hard to it for have been to Gulliard to just put a "lockdown" on Miller's leg and keep him in half-guard until the ref stood them up? He just let Miller pass like he only had a few BJJ classes in his whole life. That looked worse than strip mall jiu-jitsu...
It's Miller time baby!
They should let MG go to some grappling competitions. He is super athletic, and a great stand up guy, but as soon as the fight drops to the ground, he's like a fish in the middle of the octagon. I don't get it, maybe it's mental. If he can only get the bjj down he'd be on his way.
To be fair everyone looks like a fish out of water with Miller on top and Melvin stuffed all the takedown attempts, its just that he decided to throw his 3rd of 4th flying knee in the less then 5min and what do you know he gets taken down......... Melvin looked like an Olympic javelin thrower the way he threw that fight away.
he must train submission defense with chael sonnen
If BJ makes a comeback at 155 I want to see him vs Miller SO badly.
