UFC on FOX: Junior dos Santos dethrones Cain Velasquez in Round 1
Posted on November 12, 2011, 10:03 PM by Anton GurevichSlightly more than 60 seconds were enough for Junior "Cigano" dos Santos to TKO Cain Velasquez LIVE and FREE on FOX. Dos Santos became the first Brazilian to ever hold the UFC Heavyweight belt, after making his way through some of the toughest opponents the division had to offer.
The fight started with Junior dos Santos circling to Cain Velasquez's left, looking to land a hard punch on the Champ's jaw. Velasquez responded with untypical leg kicks that helped to keep distance from dos Santos' striking. Velasquez attempted a takedown after Junior dos Santos' unsuccessful head kick attempt, but the Brazilian defended well and kept the fight standing.
Finally, the turning point came at around 1:00 minute mark of the fight. Cain Velasquez's sluggish right hook showed dos Santos there's nothing to be afraid of in stand-up; the Brazilian got close, and unleashed a nuclear right hook of his own that landed clean on the Champ's temple. Velasquez went down, as Junior dos Santos followed with a vicious ground-and-pound that left "Big" John McCarthy no choice but to stop the action at 1:04 minute mark.
Junior dos Santos improves his MMA record to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Huge achievement for the Brazilian KO artist, who proves he's currently the #1 Heavyweight on the planet. Junior dos Santos will now face the winner of December 30th fight between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem, with sights on building a legacy in the UFC.

Brock wants no part of JDS.... If Overeem beats Brock, he will also get destroyed. Good Luck HW division.
It didn't look like Cain was on his game tonite. I picked JDS to win, but I didn't think he would do it so quickly.
If Overeem beats Brock , it will be K-1 world champ against the best HW boxer in the UFC. Hard to pick a favorite in that one. Velasquez didn't get a chance to implement the kicking game plan. I doubt Overeem would have that prob against JDS, especially after watching tonites fight. Lesnar will be a tough fight for Overeem. Big strong wrestlers are the worst match up for a striker like Alistair
Cain exposed. This is what you get when you hype a fighter up just because you like to hate on another fighter(brock)
Also, a record doesn't mean squat. Anyone who saw how massively unimpressive cain was against congo years ago saw this coming.
Nemesis is right on the money, Carwin already showed how to defeat Brock even though he lost & Cain was lucky that Congo didnt have a ground game.
unimpressive??
to me he dominated congo the whole fight exept some punches he took in the beginning...
Uhhh i remember cain getting rocked and then hugging it out the rest of the round.
Repeat 2 more times. I wasn't impressed.
Cain was hyped up, but he aint just hype... he is very complete fighter and has got a lot of cardio.....
overeem will have no problem with brock
The Reem has very good wrestling and TDD and a wicked ground game to come with it. Brocks wrestling advantage really aint all that big !! Overeem has a LOT more tools than Brock!
clearly with those kicks cain was planning for 5 rounds, had that hook missed his temple by a few centimetres it could be a very different story once junior started to limp, but meh i won £70 at the bookies :)
i personally think cormier is going to run threw everybody if he gets the fights before he gets to old hes already thirty one
Happy for Junior but didn't expect this at all!
Believe me or don't, doesn't matter just a interesting thing, I had a dream last night that JDS stopped Cain in the first except it was after numerous knock downs. Funny thing is I was picking Cain heavily.
Now bring on Hong Man Choi.... It will be JDS's Nightmare !
Well I got that one WRONG! Damn well hope Cain comes back from this. It's hard to take a lot from such a quick fight. I think JDS should win his next fight regardless of who it is.
I picked JDS to win by (t)ko but didn't think it would end as quick as it did. Not taking anything away from JDS but I don't know why but this fight just reminded me a lot of the shogun-jones fight, one guy coming off a long layoff due to injury and just looking slightly lost. Hopefully Cain does like shogun and comes back strong in his next fight. Maybe we'll see Cain vs the loser of brock/overeem, or maybe cain vs big country?
Segal in Black House taught JDS that hook, well, he just modified the already existing punch to perfection.
I think boxing coaches will be getting a lot of phone calls from the heavyweight division in the near future.
impressive victory, some real power in those hands...
looking forward to Reem vs Junior...
If Overeem beats Lesnar.... Its gonna be amazing!! Dos Santos can unleash some kicks and knees 2 becouse he wont fear being taken down....Its gonna be the Best striker in the UFC heavyweight Division and current champion VS K-1 level striker and current K-1 Grand Prix champion!! Unforgetable!!!
Man i hate to see this kind of fights, because it still leaves a lot of questions, by no means i think Dos Santos got lucky but a punch on the back of the ear can drop anyone ( Gsp vs Serra) and with the power that JDS has well ....
I still know Cain is one of the best Heavyweights , he just didnt got the chance to do nothing on this fight , im sure he could have takedown JDS if he had the chance but who knows what would it happen
Congrats to JDS he is still of my favorites fighter to watch
looking forward to JDS vs Reem!!!!!!!
Where's the clown now saying Junior isn't a KO artist.
WarHeadChief!
Right here. And I tip my hat to Junior.
:P
i knew junior would win but dam, cain did worse than gonzoga. this is what i dont understand about most peoples perception on p4p rankings. cain was ranked #4 or 5 p4p, and junior was never even on the the list, wich i always thought was rediculouse. now to all the people who were up cains ass, is junior gonna just jump up to mid top ten? it makes no sense. the public p4p rankings are a complete joke because people overhype the shit outta fighters like cain.
Okay, a Brazilian striker beats an American wrestler: I've learned you have to give credit where credit is due. Props to Dos Santos.
Don't be surprised if Cain wants to try and take that loss back one day. As different as Cain and I are in demeanor, make no mistake, Cain wants to take his belt back from Dos Santos...Not from Overeem or Lesnar...from JDS
