UFC Results: Nick Diaz defeats BJ Penn, accuses GSP of faking an injury
Posted on October 29, 2011, 11:28 PM by Anton Gurevich
Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz made a successful, and a convincing Ultimate Fighting Championship return with a victory over BJ Penn in the main event of UFC 137.
Penn started the fight aggressively, connecting with a lot of striking combinations that started to paint a crimson mask on Nick Diaz's face. Penn also executed a takedown followed by a submission attempt, but Nick Diaz managed to defend well as the fight continued.
Second by second, Diaz took control of the fight, as BJ Penn started to get beat up. Diaz went full throttle in the middle of round 2, getting very close to finish BJ Penn via strikes. The Prodigy got his right eye swallowed up, but the warrior spirit of the multi-time UFC Champion played its game, as the fight went to distance.
In round 3, BJ Penn managed to go toe-to-toe with Nick Diaz, but it was still not enough to change the course of events in the fight. Diaz continued to taunt and punish Penn, en route to what is without a doubt the biggest victory of his Mixed Martial Arts career. All three judges scored the bout unanimously for Nick Diaz, who improves his MMA record to 26-7.
Nick Diaz calls out GSP
After defeating BJ Penn, Nick Diaz started to curse and shout "George, I want that sh*t" and something else that also included the universal word "mother****er". During his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan Nick Diaz declared he thinks Georges St. Pierre is faking his injury, in order not to compete at UFC 137.
It's hard to understand why Nick Diaz calls out Georges St. Pierre, since the French-Canadian was scheduled to fight Diaz's original opponent - Carlos Condit. One way or another, Diaz's post-fight interviews always deliver, as according to many, the 209 resident already jumped Condit for a title shot opportunity against Georges St. Pierre.
GSP, who was sitting first row center at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, looked not impressed with Diaz's performance, smiling and making "shaking" impressions to the camera. Looks like Nick Diaz is not on St. Pierre's mind just yet.

I think Chael's call out was better. Great performance(as usual) by Nick. I doubt BJ is retiring. BTW, who was the chick next to GSP? :-D
I think Nick Diaz needs a couple of defeats to bring his ego back down to earth a bit. Forget the media issues, the way he conducts himself in the Octagon during and after fights is simply unsportsmanlike.
His taunting of opponents needs to get him caught and KOed cold at some point. All iron jaws can only take so much damage before they start to age and, with his lack of boxing defense, his will age faster than most.
With regard to insinuating that George is faking an injury to duck him when George has absolutely not said or did anything to indicate that he is avoiding Nick is just BS bush league stuff. He is not in the same position as Chael Sonnen who is pursuing a champion who is doing his best to not fight Chael for every reason he can find in the book. George was prepared and ready to fight Nick and Nick is the one who ****ed up but he still hasn't manned up to that fact.
I don't care how much skill and fight he has, I've lost all respect for Nick Diaz as any kind of sportsman. I hope George beats him so hard and convincingly that even Nick Diaz cannot delude himself no matter what reality he goes to in his own mind.
Man, there was probably so much adrenaline going through him at that moment.
Diaz said in many interviews, that he always does as he's told. After the fight, you can hear Cesar Gracie in the background saying "Call that mother****er out!" He did what he was told, and guess what? It worked.
It doesn't matter how "sportsmanlike" people are in MMA, because at the end of the day, it's more fight than sport.
Dude u are ridiculous. It's hardly bad sportsman like to taunt opponents in a fight. What chael does with the media is unsportman. It's fighting right? What do you want an apology every time someone makes contact. Ali was a great human being outside the ring. Inside he taunted his opponents. It's just a strategy of getting in your opponents head. Gsp took the bait. Now Diaz is in his head.
It's not hard to figure out why Nick Diaz called out St. Pierre.
You could here Cesar Gracie say "call out that mother****er St. Pierre" while Joe Rogan was asking a question.
yeah but Nick was saying "George..." and swearing and acting bizarre since they called the fight, all the way up to the interview with Rogan.
Here's another reason: you're supposed to be in the the sport to be the best. That means your goal is the title. Nick Diaz asked for the title.
Uncle Chael would be proud.
Great strategy. Unfortunately, in Diaz it is born of hatred. You can see it in his face. Its one thing to say provocative things in humor and hype and another to say them in true hatred and disdain.
So uncle chael isnt proud?
So, according to the best middleweight in the world Georges will defeat Nick?
Yeah the hype is less sportsman like and disingenuous. The real rss in Diaz is just real. Why don't you bring a chair in the ring next time Chael. Or maybe a shirt you can rip off, that way you can really make a cherade of what is supposed to be real combat.
Yeah, Nick Diaz clearly hates GSP, as you can see from these quotes:
Before the fight: "I don't think there was any bad blood between me and GSP, I just think maybe I'm a bad matchup for him."
At the press conference when Dana announced the fight: "You see how I have to come off to get a fight? I have to be the bad guy. Now I'm the bad guy and I got a fight."
So yeah, that was clearly genuine hatred, and he wasn't acting at all. (sarcasm)
I was entertained for sure. I loved the fight. Of all the different scenarios I had in mind about that fight, I didn't see that coming. I didn't think BJ would look like everyone else that Nick has fought recently. I think it's funny that Nick called out GSP. I don't think it's true but I thought it was still funny. GSP would outwrestle Nick for 5 rounds in my opinion. It was still a good performance by Diaz tonight and I'm glad he won. I would have hated it if BJ beat Nick and discredited all that he has accomplished.
It says it all in that everyone knows what GSP would do if he fought against nick, 5 rounds of lay n pray. I could care less how unsportsmanlike nick is, the man comes to fight, not try and win rounds. That deserves respect.
yeah nick "comes to fight" and then bitches about people coming to fight him. in an interview with ariel helwani after the daley fight he was talking about how he doesn't like fighters who kick him in the leg or try to knock him out.
the difference between nick diaz and gsp.
is GSP fights his fight. and dominates his opponents. he actually cares about life after the ufc. fans can bitch all they want about gsp being boring, but they need to remember that he's the one in the cage risking his health. people are quick to say someone is boring or someone should do this when they aren't in the situation.
Nick may not loose to gsp. If bj (who had his Back) couldn't roll gsp doesn't have a chance. Diaz is great competition for gsp. He has a good chance of winning.
bj got battered, expect him to put up a better fite
He won the first round, so it's not like it was a terrible performance. He just ran into the guy with the best cardio in MMA. And lets be honest, BJ has never been the type of fighter that comes from behind. He either dominates the entire fight, finishes quickly, or loses.
It's not the first time he has won the first round and then faded. See his first fight with GSP, his second with Hughes, and his fight with Fitch as notable examples.
yea ive seen em all, good pts though. guess he faded faster than i thought he woud
GSP's last couple fights have been a little boring. There's no question (if GSP beats condit) GSP will have no choice but to fight Nick. There's no denying Nick is a bad man but he should beware what he wishes for. It seems we have forgotten how good GSP is. I can't wait.
If GSP is out until the new year, maybe Diaz should fight Condit. Then we'd know fro sure who the #1 contender is. You heard it here first!
I also think it's pretty funny that, even after standing and trading with Koscheck and Shields, GSP still gets accused of always "laying and praying".
I guess reality is no match for some people's opinions.
He stands with people who he knows have mid tier striking at best... that's not going to get you much respect for your striking skills.
Granted, he exploits his enemies weakness. But that's playing it safe - which is what most people use as their point to discredit him. People don't say hes just a LnP fighter as much as they say he doesnt even try to finish fights anymore. You can see a clear difference of his fighting style before and after GSP-Serra 2.
I personally think he needs to be pushed to the limits by someone to snap him out of his safe mentality and actually make him go for a finish again. Maybe Diaz could be that person with his endless cardio, you can bet GSP would likely not want it to go the distance.
Not exploiting someones weakness is a weakness in itself. the fact GSP does makes him far superior and in part why he's champ. He is too smart to start fighting a fans fight. Leave that for W Silva and co who get brutally KO'd fighting 'to win'.
He stood with Shields because Shields would have submitted him. And even when he was standing with him, Shields broke his orbital bone. Shields boxing isn't even near the level of Diaz!
Well now a days its either laying and praying or jabbing his way to victory. Its been a long time since we've seen GSP really try and finish an opponent off. There is no denying that he is good at Winning, but his "Legacy" seems to be getting in the way of him actually fighting. I for one would lose no respect for him if he lost, but a least tried to actually finish someone.
If GSP fights Diaz the same way he fought Shields, GSP gonna being holding up his own damn pants..
GSP won't fight Diaz the way he fought Shields. Diaz ground game isn't as good as Shields. GSP only needs to outwrestle Diaz and like St-Pierre or not you can't deny with his strenght, his athleticism and his wrestling skills he will beat Diaz on the ground (which even BJ penn was doing in the first round).
Diaz ground game is far better than shields.
You are right and way wrong. He may out wrestle Diaz if he can hold Nick down. Problem is, Diaz scrambles on the ground where BJ is more methodical and works on positioning with his flexibility.
If GSP starts to scramble with Nick on the ground, he is gonna get submitted. Nick is an expert as causing people to get swept in a scramble, then submitted.
GSP's only real option is to attempt to out score Diaz for 5 rounds with repetitive takedowns to piss Nick off.
It may be boring, but it's his only real option..
Ever since Hughes srm barred GSP he hasnt been close to being submitted. He evolves and improves always. Diaz has nothing GSP hasnt dealt with before. There's not a single are of MMA that Diaz is better at other than getting hit.
wow you act as if it is a given that gsp will get submitted. most of gsps fights are contested on the ground and he's only been submitted once and that was by matt hughes. they both have an equal chance to win,
Ever since GSP beat Serra he hasnt fought anyone who both had better BJJ and striking than him.
typical diaz win. the gsp fight is gonna go down the same way. nick can do this for days. he's a great boxer. his groundgame is outstanding. gsp is a better wrestler. thats it. nick will win the title IF that fight happens.
BJ cant expect a win though with being gassed after the first round
Ha! For all you cement heads that bought into the Diaz delusion that GSP was running from Nick, Dana announced that GSP has asked for Condit to be put on hold so he can fight Mr. Diaz!
GSP is pissed off! That is bad news for Nick but great news for fight fans.
And for all you Anderson Silva fans out there, this is how you handle a fighter that disrespects you...you go looking for him.
or he is just more scared for condit afterall, i would be aswell
FFS idiot!!
I tell you what, after Bj talked to Rogan I felt really upset.. Bj's my favourite fighter and Nick just beat the will out of him... :'(
Yea that was really sad. I hated that moment for BJ.
I'm so tired of these delusional fans that think Nick Diaz is good, Who has he fought? BJ Penn is the most overrated fighter in the game at this point, face it folks he hasn't been good for awhile. Nick Diaz has fought a who's who of nobody's. For all of you who complain about GSP's style ask yourself the question If I had the most skills and the best team who could come up with the best game plan, What would you do? Bottom line is GSP is going to destroy him period.
