UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar once again proved he's made out of pure iron. Edgar remained the UFC Lightweight Champion after another inspiring performance against the arch nemesis Gray Maynard in the main event of UFC 136 in Houston, Texas.

Just like in the first title fight between the two, it was Gray Maynard who dominated in Round 1. Maynard landed a good punching combo, followed by flying knee, high kick and basically every single possible striking move in MMA to get Frankie Edgar bloodied and beat up after just five minutes inside the Octagon.

However, Gray Maynard's fans were up for a disappointment. Frankie Edgar bounced back in Round 2 with well-calculated striking and high level wrestling that helped him to get back in charge of the fight. Gray Maynard was patient in Round 1, and this very same "patience" probably cost him a fight in later rounds. Maynard was unable to pull the trigger as Frankie Edgar continued to dominate the distance with laser-sharp jabs and leg kicks.

The deciding moment came in Round 4 when Edgar dropped Maynard, followed him to the fence and finished the fight via TKO in brutal fashion. Maynard was out cold, as Frankie Edgar celebrated a truly amazing victory, a triumph of his heart and determination as a fighter.

Without cutting any significant weight at 155lbs, Edgar can easily hunt down Jose Aldo at 145. Nicknamed "The Answer", Frankie Edgar definitely gave all the answers tonight when it comes to his legitimacy as the UFC Lightweight Champion.

I beg to differ. Frankie was never hurt nearly as bad as Kongo was in that fight, and he won 3 rounds between being hurt and finishing. Totally different story.

Frankie has now won 7 of the last 9 rounds they have fought and finished this fight decisively. If Gray can win a couple fights and work his way back, then we can see a 4th, but it's time for someone else (Guida) to get his shot.

Fight of the night, KO of the night, worthy main event. Maynard come close again but Edgar has the heart of a champion. What I cannot fathom with Edgar is how he outclassed Maynard for the majority of their last two fights but on both ocassions got caught early into the fight and almost beaten both times. Seems Maynard has Edgars number for one round only when they fight and then Edgar switches on the style. Most impressive comeback. been looking forward to this rematch for ages and well worth the wait.

Be interesting to see who's next for Maynard and Edgar. I just hope they both stay healthy and injury free, especially Edgar, he got the most stacked division beneath him and a prolonged run as champ has to put him right up there with any other champ in p4p terms as he is tiny for a LW and LW is easily the deepest most talented division by far.

You're right, Its interesting. Suppose the fights were three rounds. Could have been very different. An interesting argument for five round fights.

Amazing comeback by Edgar - couldn't believe the fight was going the same identical way up until round 3, when Maynard seemed like he wasn't himself anymore. I think he got another adrenaline dump in round 1 as in their last fight. Edgar followed up a Maynard sprawl with a beautiful uppercut and went in for the kill, was amazing! Edgar just passed up Aldo in my #3 p4p position!

So hard to follow up from the second fight with as much excitement..... they did it just as good.

Dana just said Frankie is p4p #2, hard to disagree.

@Keith Yeah GSP is still ahead of Edgar in my opinion, and Anderson is by far and away #1 for me, but Edgar just passed up Aldo in my rankings. Aldo seems to be taking a safety-first approach to his title fights and is not the same Aldo that was running through people and being explosive, aggressive, and determined like he used to be.

Frankie is the man, and a great champion--but how many times has he defended his title?

Silva and GSP have been defending their titles for quite a while against a wide variety of opponents and skillsets. I feel the same way about Jon Jones--given time, and contiuned success, both Edgar and Jones will be in the same league as Silva and GSP.

Valid point, but, he did beat BJ twice and his resume is very strong already with some top scalps. Time will truly tell if Edgar deserves to be in the same league as GSP and Silva. I can't help feeling he will come unstuck at some point due to size disadvantage, but his application of movement and style I would already put on a par with Silva and GSP. Imagine if Edgar had Jones or Silva's frame, better still, imagine if Silva and Jones were tiny in their divisions. Would they still be champions?

Gotta give it to the Jersey Kid, now he has to beat everyone in the most stacked division in the UFC and then we can talk about a superfight with Aldo. Kind of good he finished it too, that send a real strong message to his challengers.

The impressive thing about Edgar is how he improved the results in both the rematches with both Penn and Maynard.

With Penn the first match was close and the second was a clear cut win.

With Maynard there was the loss then draw and then KO.

    And the guy has heart.

Don't know why it's recorded and reported on multiple mma sites as a TKO. Clearly obvious it was a KO finish.

That aside.....great performance by Frankie, has a heart if a champion. That trilogy played out like it was the Rocky movies.

anyone else see Edgar's coach/trainer pouring cold water down his shorts at the end of round one? Seems that once he got his balls cooled off he upped his game. Coincidence? I think not...
