Melvin Guillard dropped out of the UFC Lightweight title shot race courtesy of Joe Lauzon's first round Rear Naked Choke submission victory.

The Young Asassin opened aggressively, but it was Lauzon who connected first with a strong left hook. Dazed Melvin Guillard lost his balance, as Lauzon went for the kill on the ground. Guillard quickly found himself defending Lauzon's Rear Naked Choke attempt and his five-fight winning streak inside the Octagon. The choke went deep, as Melvinn Guillard had no choice but to tap out for the eighth time in his Mixed Martial Arts career.

Joe Lauzon gets on a two-fight winning streak, but the real story of this fight is Melvin Guillard who joins George Sotiropoulos on sidelines of the race of the UFC Lightweight gold.

There is some cosmic force who seems to punish hubris--and Guillard's happy-go-lucky overconfidence ran into a wall of pride.

I suppose that makes Joe Lauzon a Jiu Jitsu Killer Killer.

I feel dissapointed for Guillard as I could've seen him going all the way but I can't see Lauzon reaching the top. Ethier way great fight.

I expected Lauzon to win by submission in the first round, but I didn't think he would get it to the ground like that.

But completely I'm not surprised. He always comes out really fast in the first round.

I love Joe. I'll be honest I thought he would get steam-rollered but I'm glad I was wrong

This just shows you how crazy MMA fights can be. Anything can happen. I also thought that Guillard would take this fight easily, but J-Lau surprised me with that hook. Props to Joe Lauzon. I can't wait to see him back in action.

hind sight is 20-20 killdozer. where is your pre-fight lauzon prediction. I didn't see anyone picking Lauzon. Good for him though. He's tough. Melvin was overconfident and if I hadn't bet $500 on Melvin to finish within 3 rounds I would've been laughing my ass off. Now I can't even afford to laugh and will be eating top ramen tomrorrow while i sweat out the charger game.

Melvin had this shit in the bag... he ****ED UP... cause he got all ****y, overconfident and CARELESS !! He touched lauzon good and thought he was a God.. dropped his hands and got in Lauzon's face like he got an iron chin, so he got ROCKED.. and choked out like a bitch.. !! Seriously that was just a sad display of wasted talent... and it's a damn shame with all Melvin's experience he should know better, than to underestimate his opponent. He's not ready to be a champ.. physically sure, skillwise most def... but mentally he's just a little boy that needs to grow up and Lauzon finishing him is the first step into that direction.
