I expected Marquardt to win regardless, but that definitely took away from the fight... The idea of a match between two guys at that level is to see who takes the next step up the latter and when something like that happens it kind of makes you wonder how things would have played out otherwise. I guess intelligence is as big a part of fighting as striking or grappling tho, and Palhares failed in that department.
I agree as nice as it was to see Palhares "get his just desserts", I would have liked to see the fight develop more. I think it would have been a great fight.
Yes, undeniably this is an example of a fighter losing a fight directly as a result of a mental error. One of the ways to spot these guys is to watch how they interact with their corner on the stool. Do they look their coach in the eye and listen to the advice? Do they give feed-back on the stool? Some guys you can see they don't hear anything their coaches are saying. People who can keep their head have a big advantage.
And, it was a smart strategic move by Nate to build up a sweat before the fight.
After Palhares practically destroys Drwal's leg and doesn't let go after he taps for 5 minutes it seems fitting that this happens to him. Palhares is an excellent fighter but not much in the brains department.
It's not the ref's job to stop the fight unless there is a reason to under MMA rules, such as an eye gouge or groin shot. Pointing at your opponent is not one of those rules, so the ref did nothing wrong. Complaining in general is not a reason to stop a fight. I've seen fighters turn to the ref to complain about nothing and get knocked clean out, which is completely fair.
Palhares was just upset someone was actually able to get out of one of his sub attempts. The ref checked him, the doctors, the commission he had no grease... Palhares is just a sore loser.

number one rule in fighting; "DEFEND YOURSELF AT ALL TIMES", and Palhares did not follow the rules, so i'm glad he lost.

In truth the ref could have stopped the fight when he started pointing at him and took his eyes of nate.
