UFC 143 Results: Carlos Condit defeats Nick Diaz, gets next shot at GSP

Carlos Condit is now the new Interim UFC Welterweight Champion, after defeating Nick Diaz via Unanimous Decision in the main event of UFC 143 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Condit had a clear gameplan of avoiding Nick Diaz strikes, going full throttle into a counter-punching mode. Diaz chased Condit around the Octagon, and was able to land good striking combinations on several occasions, but it was Carlos Condit who the quantity and quality in this match-up.

Diaz failed to execute his gameplan. He was unable to dictate the pace during the fight and to have continuous attacks on Carlos Condit. Diaz was rushing forward and kept the pressure on Condit, which played according to scenario Greg Jackson prepared for his protege. It was Condit who decided where the fight was taking place, and it was Condit who was able to mix kicks and punches according to the developments inside the Octagon.

Striking-wise, NBK's kickboxing skills made the difference in this fight. Condit used his legs to keep distance from Nick Diaz, who was visibly frustrated throughout the fight. Carlos Condit was able to hit Diaz with a few good head kicks, but the Cesar Gracie representative displayed an impressive chin that kept him in the fight.

In the end, it's a 49-46 (x2), 48-47 Unanimous Decision for Carlos Condit, who will now face Georges St. Pierre for the Undisputed UFC Welterweight title. As for Nick Diaz, the 209'er announced his retirement in a post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, and will now go back to Stockton, California, to revise the future of his Mixed Martial Arts career.

I thought Diaz took rounds 1, 2, and 5. Condit rounds 3 and 4. Diaz won in my opinion. Close fight though.

you may have been watching since the nineties but clearly you have no appreciation for the game plan executed by Condit or your just an upset Diaz fan boy. Sure Diaz pushed the pace but he wasn't able to trap condit and land a high volume of shots like he usually does. Condit landed leg kicks through out and countered well. It was close fight beacuse NIETHER guy did anything decisive consistently. I thought it was a draw myself unfortunately mma folk find it difficult to score 10-10 round and look for any microscopic reason to give a round 10-9.

There is a huge difference between running away and circling away from your opponent, especially when your opponent's main goal is to get you trapped in a corner.

You're at a loss for comprehension I think. How can you be running away the netire fight and score more strikes. His style incorporates technique that diaz was not ready for as it hasn't happened to him before. Carlos was purely more dynamic than Diaz. I picked Diaz to win but I like Carlos better and am glad he found a way.

Well if Diaz is a marathon runner he should have just kept on catching him. Thing is that even when caught Carlos unloaded better strikes and then spun off before Diaz could capitalize properly.

One guy backs up and one pushes forward no matter what in any fight unless they are stupid and don't play to their strengths. Yeah sure maybe he should have just stood there in front of Diaz like rockem socken robots until one head popped off to show off their technique. If Diaz wasn't coming in which is rare Condit was coming in.

You know what would have changed the way the whole fight played out? Diaz clinching him to keep him from getting off the cage. Or Diaz kneeing him in the face when he ducked away. Or Diaz running after him rather than watching him skip away. Or Diaz doing anything different really. Nick came with a plan that had worked in almost every fight and this time it didn't. If he could have adapted even a little, he might have been able to snatch the fight from Condit.

okay walking forward doesn't mean you win a fight? Carlos landed more shots, that is how you win. Just cause Nick couldn't hit him that much that is his problem. Stop being a sore loser because he beat you fair and square.

Condit did a great job on sticking to his greg jackson-gameplan; the smart way of fighting, and if you're lucky enough you might just get a KO - like F.edgar did with Maynard.

Though I had that bout with Diaz winning 1,2, and 5.

What would be most interesting though, is how Dana would react to Diaz's possible retirement - and how the UFC will hype up a GSP - Condit bout.

Hope Ellenberger gets a convincing win over Sanchez so we have something to look forward to.

I am with Anton on this one, even though I picked Diaz to win.

Condit did run away for the first 2 rounds and lost them. However, in the next three rounds, he picked apart Diaz as he was coming in, out scoring him 2 o3 punches/kicks to 1, then spun away and reset. That's a lot different than running away.

I expected a war, but I think Condit was smart not to fight one. It would have been more exciting to see him and Diaz slug it out, but that's Nick's world.

I was disappointed that Nick didn't make an adjustment once he realized what Condit was doing. And after the fourth, Caesar Gracie made a huge mistake, but telling Nick he was up 3-1.

St Pierre wont fight until November, so I guess Carlos will get a chance to defend the interim belt. Rematch with Ellenburger?

Condit was just following the game plan that his coaches schemed up to win a decision. The one everybody should be talking about is Greg Jackson. He'sthe coach who has all his fighters fight a "smart" fight and where his fighters will take no risk at all. Dana White has criticized Greg Jackson in the past for coming up with these elaborate game plans that make fights boring to watch. Condit was saying that he was a warrior and I did think he was going to keep it real and be a warrior against Nick Diaz tonight. I expected a war tonight from both fighters but Greg Jackson wasn't about to let Condit take that big of a risk. Only thing Nick didn't do right tonight was chase Condit down more aggressively and force Condit to the floor. I'm positive he would have submitted him if he would've forced the action a little more earlier in the fight.

Elaborate game plan? Damn, if Diaz's predictable corner and clobber strategy was a flamethrower, the strategy could be summed up by "Don't stand in the fire."

Diaz looked confused that his normal strategy wasn't working and adjusted almost nothing until the 5th round, where he started throwing out weak kicks because he didn't know what else to do. I have no idea how some people will say that Diaz has the best boxing in MMA, then act surprised when a fighter isn't interested in standing there and trading punches with them.

easy for you to talk shit about people taking no risks you sit behind a computer screen bashing condit for not making the same mistakes that diaz's past opponents made. you expect them to not give a shit about life outside the cage. this isn't a ****ing bar brawl. mma is not all about the finish it's about seeing who can execute their gameplan the best. some people like you need to get the **** over the fact that some of the fighters actually fight smart rather than go for that punchers chance

Best comment by Onetime. No one is saying that Condit sucks but people are just disappointed that he didn't bang like he usually does. Yea Condit did land a lot of strikes but he did so by running for sure. He made the fight boring and this fighting thing is meant for entertainment. I won't blame Carlos for fighting the smart fight but the PPV part of the card really made me start to think if I should keep paying for these things. Once people start making it towards the top, they get conservative and boring. Nick doesn't do that and that's why I think many people were rooting for him. Well enough of my rant now.

Greg Jackson trains his fighters to SURVIVE in a fight with a decision win instead of training them to go in there and fight their opponent where ever the fight goes and not leaving it in the hands of the judges the way it's supposed to be.

I can appreciate what Condit did. Other people tried to evade Diaz when he started in on them and weren't able to. Condit figured out how to do it and landed more kicks than would be necessary to snap a normal man's leg. Diaz talks tough, but he took some damage in that fight. Condit beat him fair and square and he knows it, which is why he was congratulating Condit for a job well done in the same speech where he was being an emo drama queen and bashing the sport.

You must be trolling or don't know what you're talking about... Condit landed more strikes in the fight so I don't think that means he was just "surviving".

and saying that Jackson teaches his fighters to get decisions... Condit has 26 finishes and 2 decisions? Also Jon Jones has finished 8 opponent's in a row (if you count Hamill).

Please know what you're talking about or research stuff first before you come on here and waste peoples time reading false statements.

Greg Jackson needs to just leave MMA forever, he is making MMA a point accumulation, and not a fight... the top fighters he coach take no risks what so ever.... Hats off to Condit for "winning" but Greg Jackson has once again turned an amazing finisher ( 26 of his 27 wins all by stoppages) into a glorified point accumulator.... Now watch him ditch Condit for GSP. Condit has been there for a lot longer than GSP, and Jackson will drop him like a bad habit to be in GSP's corner.

Is there something that keeps other fighters from game planning for this? If Greg Jackson is going to teach fighters to "run away, take no risks and just score points" why shouldn't other fighters plan for their opponent to do so? Then they can mirror their opponent's strategy and be really defensive so they are forced to be aggressive in order to score anything. This will cause them to deviate from their gameplan and create the needed openings.

Of course, that's assuming you're right about Greg Jackson, and you're not. Condit and Guillard are prime examples of this.

Btw, has it occurred to you that the game plan might have been to chop down Nick's leg then move in for the kill? Condit kicked him in the leg about 70 times, which would be more than enough to make me cry like a baby. Maybe phase two of the plan was never reached because Nick is so ridiculously tough? Give Nick some credit; some good head kicks, a couple solid hooks, and over 50 leg kicks, yet he didn't fall down once.

Some people want to watch a fight and some people want to watch a point earning strategy fight. Stop hating. I agree with Hunter. I like watching fights. I want to see finishes. That's what the old school guys came up watching. This sport wasn't built on point earning strategy decision winners.

In all fairness, UFC used to not have judges at all, so of course people didn't just try to score points.

But compare this fight to Marco Ruas' championship win at UFC 7. Due to the lack of weight classes at the time, Ruas was fighting a much larger man, who outweighed him by over 50 lbs easily, and could knock him out easily if he stood in front of him. He had no judges to gift him the fight by staying away being safe and scoring points. So what did he do?

He did the exact same thing that Carlos Condit did. He stayed away from his opponent and chopped away with leg kicks using his Muay Thai. The only difference is that about 20 minutes into the fight, his opponent's leg finally buckled from the pressure and Ruas moved in to finish.

The old school guys had a lot of the same strategies that are around today. Many strategies that seem boring in practice today only seem that way because everyone in the UFC is tough as nails. Very few of the sport's founders could withstand the likes of Condit leg kicks, Machida's karate counterstriking, or Fitch's or Maynard's ground and pound.

True what FreeFights said on Twitter.

If there wasn't a fence to keep Condit in, he would of ran pass Forrest Griffin

Nick Diaz won round 1, 2, and 5.... Even Pro MMA fighters think so also.. Yes including lot's of UFC fighters... Wanna know who...Well look it up..

I guess Nick should have just thrown a bunch of baby kicks also just to score more points during the fight.... ... Don't Be Scared Homie...

Round 1 was Condits for sure. Waving your arms about and walking forward is rarely enough to win a round or a fight. If Condit was being forced into endless back peddling without landing damage fair enough, Diaz wins, but Condit was hitting then moving, in and out. And he dominated in round 1 clearly.

This was a clinic by Condit. Man some mma fans are just dumb brutes. This is mma and anything goes including not needing to stand and trade. It's as dumb as someone saying taking it to the ground is not allowed or striking is not allowed. Not being a moronic stationary target is a defensive skill that clearly gave Carlos a well earned win. Trust me Carlos can go for drinks tonight while Diaz will take a couple of asprins and call it a night. Tomorrow Diaz will not be jogging on those legs.

Dont complain about Jacksons gameplans he knows how to win and uses it. IF THE RULES AND JUDGES WOULD APPRECIATE AGGRESSIVE STYLE THEY WOULD FIGHT DIFFERENTLY... If Diaz had won people would say Condit was robbed

man all these so called mma experts who think a fighter needs to bleed or die for the fans seriously don't understand that what UFC is offering fans is a fight sport and not a brawl in some prison or back alley.

Carlos put on a clinic! "It was called how to spank a Diaz's ass". The fact that he did it without endangering his health is the icing on the cake.

No where in the mma rule book does it say you must go blow for blow. If Nick couldn't land a decent combo on Carlos that's Nick's problem not Carlos'.

Fact is Carlos landed the more telling blows. Nick is an ugly guy and looks like a bashed crab on a good day but at the end of the fight his head told the story of a guy who did not have the smarts to adjust.

Walking forward with no answer does not equate to a victory in any fighting sport I know of. It's called effective agression for a reason and Nick was clearly not effective in landing his blows.

Nick and fans of his style simply wanted Carlos to stand and trade but that in itself would be mixed martial arts. It would simply be a "hill billy throw down"

Congrats to Carlos. I pick him to KO GSP when they meet.

Stick and move stick and move; Carlos played the much dumber Diaz perfectly.

Nicky crying, he wouldn't let me hit him was classic punk mentality.

It's very clear Diaz and his corner were exposed for lack of intelligence, very funny stuff.

don't like diaz that much but don't hate him.....

but i don't like fights like that sry....

some guy got fighting spirit and wannt to fight some just go for the w...

i agree diaz lost that fight...proobs to the national big killer (don't seem a killa to me at this fight)

i mean i like technical fights too like rashad davis or penn edger machida jones ....they were a lil technical but there were not like some one is runnin away....

why is pride gone ? the rules were better the time .....

joe rogen need s to make a new decition about butin fighters together...

i mean its startin to work out if u are not a good wrestle guy to be ELUSIV(runnin)

i hope son or later we will have a match up with to guys beeing soo elusiv jumpin front and back kicken the shit out of there legs ....technical at its best some will call it dump some smart or maybe its the master plan;)

i mean they are pros and get payed good for fighting so please let them fight .....i one guy whants to fight the other just a w ....the fightin guy will look bad outclassed call it what u want.....i mean ifa wrestler takes u down and do nothing they stand u up why??course we not wanna see bad shit or not ??some guys say this is mma bla bla bla ok !!!then give a wrestler a chance just to hold some one for 5x5 min without put them back on there feet...the other guy needs to get up by himself...

what rules are the best for mma?

I kinda agree with the give the wrestler a chance thing. I think if a wrestler is genuinely working on you, he should be allowed to continue on the ground as long as he can control you, and working on the ground doesn't have to be going for the finish with every second, much like every striking exchange doesn't have to seek a KO. It's his style, and you need to learn to do something about it.

Some people think that would make fights boring wrestling matches, but I think it would encourage people on the bottom to make the fight interesting. If people knew that Fitch being on top of them meant they were screwed unless they did something about it, they wouldn't just try to hold guard and wait for the stand up, because it would only be coming at the end of the round. They'd fight Fitch the way Sanchez did, which was a much more exciting affair that had Sanchez rolling around trying to get submissions and fight back rather than lieing there and taking it.

Just choosing to hold position on the ground, do nothing, and wait for the stand up is the ground game equivalent to running away from the stand up the whole fight. I have no idea why people will blame the fighter on top when this happens though.
