UFC 140: Frank Mir snaps Minotauro Nogueira's shoulder in Round 1
Posted on December 10, 2011, 09:49 PM by Anton GurevichFormer UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir has finally found consistency, with an impressive submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the co-main event of UFC 140.
Frank Mir was getting outclassed by Nogueira in stand-up, with the Brazilian legend punishing his arch-nemesis with perfectly-timed punches at the fence. However, when the action went down to the ground, it was Frank Mir who displayed incredible skill and versatility.
Nogueira unleashed a Guillotine Choke attempt, but Mir easily rolled over the Brazilian straight into a Kimura shoulder lock. Nogueira was in a bad position to escape from the lock, but still refused to tap out, as the 260-pound Mir was pilling the pressure.
Nogueira finally tapped out when his shoulder snapped, as the referee Herb Dean rushed in to stop the action. Frank Mir gave his victory speech with Nogueira still down on the canvas, possibly getting prepared to leave the arena on a stretcher.
Frank Mir is now 16-5 in MMA.

So sad that Nog lost, that was some scary stuff possibly career ending when u factor in how old Nog is n the damage he has taken...can't take anything away from Mir tho, his Bjj is sick
That was a ridiculous display of BJJ. Mir's BJJ skills have always been overshadowed by Nog's. That was just changed tonight.
It's kinda fitting that the guy who was claiming that he didn't perform to his abililities (Nog) in the first fight now has his first KO and sub loss to the same guy.
I like Nog but I hate the post fight "I was not healthy" game that so many fighters play.
Man I wish so badly that Nog had kept punching Mir instead of going for that sub, I think he would have finished him, sucks that he lost, always sad to see legends of MMA lose
Mir promised a devasting finish, he followed through.
Mir is one of my favourite fighters and I was and I'm still in astonishment at that submission, pure beauty and art in every sense of the word.
BUT... I feel the awesomeness of the sub overshadowed the start of the fight, were Mir looked terrible. He looked gassed in no time at all and he was getting roughed up on the feet, at range and close.
I think it would have been over if Nog has chosen to pound him rather than go for the guillotine, this won't be the case with Brock or Reem. I love Mir but after a performance like that I don't fancy his chances against Brock or Reem.
yea, Mir needs to drop about 10 lbs stay around 250, if he wants the mass but also keep some cardio 260 is too big for him... his striking was off for some reason, and like u said he looked gassed right away. if Mir can condition better we could see him top 5 HW
Agreed.
Now we just have to see Werdum vs. Mir to see who is the greatest HW BJJ artist.
Would be interesting. I would give Werdum in pure BJJ skill, but overall, Mir is a more complete fighter. I would give the edge to Mir based on striking and inventiveness on the ground.
Yes. Those two rolls on the ground with the Kimura where amazing.
I would probably give it to Mir too, but I would sill like to see that fight.
Those of you who don't know this is the first time Nog has been submitted. That is a big deal.
it sure is
Now Mir is the first to (T)KO and first to sub Nog. Pretty damn good stats by anybody's standard.
It's so twisted that Joe Rogan was saying how Mir & Big Nog have best 2 heavyweight BJJ games, but that Big Nog was on a bit of another level... and then Mir takes his arm off...
Rogan likes to talk out of his ass.
OMG that was an amazing submission, but i hope the best for Big Nog that this isnt one of those career ending submissions
The setup for that sub was amazing. For Mir to possess that kind of agility on the ground at 260lbs is insane. To top it off, it seems he knew exactly what he was going for as soon as he began to counter the guillotine.
I suspect a shoulder dislocation that if not too unstable shouldn't require surgery. Worst case fractured humerus but I don't think so. It looks like you can see the ball of the humerus pop up in the deltoid. I've seen guys throwing up from the pain of that dislocation though. Tough guy the way he walked out talking calmly.
Broken upper arm
well... he WAS run over by a Bus......
AND he did that after being rocked badly by hard strikes.
He did it almost automatically.
Pretty amazing the way that went. I did not expect that at all. I knew he was good, but the foresight that setup required is mind boggling under the circumstances.
Mir has broken 2 fighters arms in his MMA career the guy really has no concern for the well being of any human.
He is a fighter. It's his job... no, it is his responsibility to try as hard as he can until the fight is stopped by the ref or the bell. He did exactly the right thing. It is unfortunate that Nog was hurt so seriously, and I hope him a swift, successful recovery, but that is how the game goes. Nog would have done the same if the opportunity presented itself.
Nog should have tapped before it broke then. I personally found Carwins pounding him after he was clearly out or hendos flying elbow drop on Bisping who was clearly out far worse than either of Mirs infliction of broken arms to Sylvia and Nog.
When a submission attempt is applied the opponent can tap if the pain is unbearable or they think they might sustain serious injury, the ref can also step in to prevent serious injury but when a fighter is out cold it is just thug mentality that keeps a man hitting another.
This was in reply to fletchernot you ljense8.
I caught that. :) Either way you are right. Nog should have tapped, but unfortunately, he didn't. That is just how it goes. He has never tapped before, and his pride got in the way.
I think its just that he does it on accident because of all that strength. Im pretty sure he could beat a gorrila in an arm wrestle
Did you hear his talk with Rogan? Nog was his idol and he hoped he's okay. It's up to Nog to tap (which he finally did)
Did you even watch the interview with Joe Rogan after the fight? Seriously???
I watched the interview and I give respect to Mir for hanging in there and submitting an MMA legend but his arrogance just gets to me sometimes. I don't like to talk bad about fighters but he should admit that Nog rocked him. Instead, he says that he wasn't hurt, he was "stunned". There was a time that Joe Rogan along with some other viewers thought he was actually out and may have been cause he wasn't really moving. I hope Nog is ok and looking forward to seeing what Mir does after this big win.
clear Mir fans weak me even though I still gave him props but fact of the matter is if Nog stood back up Mir goes down. I wasn't going for either one. I just called it how I saw it. good fight though.
PRIDE over shoulder that's what you get, you shouldn't give up on a submission just because your opponent isn't willing to tap
Nogueira will reconsider his career for sure but he's like wanderlei he doesn't want to retire. Will be a tough decision but it's not really nice to retire after the first submission loss of his long and amazing career.
ya that was narley he broke the hell out of it maybe he wasnt lieing when he said he would kill brock if he had the chance in the ring guys a nut but he did get caught and almust lost jds would ko him so quck
Easily Fight of the night!! WoW!!!!!!! Whats Nog gonna say now? Staf infection in his arm making it weak and more easily broken.
Love him or hate... Mir showed a lot of heart and holy shit can that dude crank on an arm. Just ask Tim Silvia!
Hope Big Nog recovers...that was nasty!
why didnt he finish mir with his hands?? he was almost out...
very impressive of mir getting out of noguerias choke and ending up submitting him....
hope nogueria didnt get so hurt....
Truthfully i don't care about Mir, yes it was a good sub. But Nog made a huge mistake, he thought Mir was hurt a lot more than he was. He jumped on that neck very sloppy. As he was doing it, i thought that it looked a bit sloppy, poorly timed. and the fact that Mir wasn't all that hurt. The fact that he rolled out it from a Nog seemed that he was Not that hurt at all. It was defiantly Nog's fight to lose and he got sloppy and paid the price for it. Again, not taking anything away from Mir, that was a great escape and he rolled Nog beautifully, other HW's couldn't have done that. But Nog has a few fights left in him. And damn his boxing looked good, especially after the first fight.
Imagine being ringside and hearing the break and seeing the dislocation of the shoulder and arm....
I would rather be called a pussy and have my arm in place....
Competition is not worth ruining your body and health....Frank Mir is an animal with his submission, ask tim silvia....
Big NOG- play golf dude with your good arm......
So upsetting watching this fight. To me that's by far the best Big Nog we've seen since at least the Randy Couture fight, if not ever in the Octagon.
Nog looked in shape, he looked fast and strong his hands looked really good and I coulda swore he was going to finish the fight. But you have to give it to Mir, he was able to roll with Nog on the ground and when he got his chance he capitalized.
I like Mir and Nog, good fight. I don't why people are saying that Mir is a jerk for breaking Nog's arm. You either tap or brace for impact. I'm pretty sure Nog would of done the same.
I think Nogueira just lost his maxxed out Submission Defense stat in the next UFC game.
poor nog, theres no way hell be back after that, i was there live and he was on the ground for atleast 10 minutes after the fight.
I had to laugh when each time the arm snapped on the many replays, the crowd went OOOOOOO.
