Mixed Martiall Arts legend Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva earned his third victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, this time with a somewhat nostalgic performance against Cung Le in the co-main event of UFC 139 in San Jose, California

Le was more than a game opponent for Wanderlei Silva. Hollywood superstar unleashed a full arsenal of kicks and spinning back fists that hurt Wanderlei Silva on several occasions. Le continued to pressure the Brazilian, but Wanderlei Silva managed to bounce back towards the end of Round 1 to punish the Saigonian.

Round 2 started with Wanderlei Silva stalking Cung Le. Silva was patient, waiting for Cung Le to make a mistake that would cost him a fight. This moment came when Wanderlei Silva timed into one of Le's kicks, unleashing terror with Muay Thai clinch and Boxing combinations. Le was seriously hurt, as the referee had no choice but to step in to stop the action.

In the end, Wanderlei Siva earns his first victory since the encounter with Michael Bisping at UFC 110. Silva is now 34-11-1 in MMA, with sights on ending his career on a high note.

Got to agree with you. He has beaten a legend in fighting sports tonight. It would be perfect timing for retirement.

Can't say I disagree, but unfortunately, he is unlikely to retire until he is forced to do so.

That was a BULLSHIT stoppage! Cung was not KO, he went for a single... smfh! not saying he was not hurt... Wandy had him rocked but he was still fighting and tried to pull his leg out. That stoppage was HORRIBLE!

Watch again, he already broke his nose big time from the knee and the single leg is just a desperation move.. Hammered afterwards and not intelligently defending himself...

god.. Joe Rogan is an idiot sometimes really... look at the video, Cung Le was going for a takedown when he was laying flat and holding one of Wanderlei's leg?? Even worse are the idiots that agree with him. Cung Le's nose was broken, no way he could've gone much longer anyways.

bro cung lee hand wandy's leg yes, however wanderlei had cung on the ground and was avoiding that take down while hammering away at cung le's face. le was conscious yes. but he didn't advance position until after the ref pushed wanderlei off.

He broke his nose so what??? This must be your first MMA event... fighters break their nose all the time.. break their hands.. their arms and keep fighting 2 more rounds. That's not a reason to stop the fight unless the fighter taps or there is a corner stoppage. Desperation move or not, Cung went for the single leg and was NOT out at all.. he did not get dropped face down he went for a single... Silva gave him 1 or 2 quick hammerfists and the ref didnt even give Cung a chance to react to that or position himself better he just stopped the fight. He must be a Silva fan !! If you think that was a good stoppage... the Hendo - Shogun fight should've been stopped 10 times...

I also think it was stopped too soon. He was hurt but he was trying to fight and it was the end of the round. I have seen many fighters come back the next round and win after far worse. That said, even though I picked Cung to win and he clearly won the first round and seemed to be taking a round off before he got caught, I knew Wandy was going to win as soon as the fight started. When he is patient and technical Wandy is still one of the best. If he came out guns blazing Cung would have won in the first round and that is what I thought he would do. The only person that can beat a patient Wandy at MW is AS.

I called it, my dad called it, Rogan called it

When Le started to look tired in the 2nd we all said; "if Wand puts pressure on Le he will get confused and not know what to do and Wand could use that to his advantage." Even in the end of the first when Wand put on pressure he looked akward.

He does have nice kicking techniques, affective yes, flashy; most definitly. But doing moves like that are really unnesassary.

I have to eat some crow pie too, my only losses were a nutty choice of an upset by Brillz over bader based on his previous robbery against Lil Nog, and Hendo over Rua. Win loose are draw, the main event was worth every penny. I think it could have been a draw or at least a split decision, but have no problem with Hendo winning the fight. Great card all the way around and I wanted to be the first not to make any excuses for my picks. Win Bonner, Win faber, win Wandy Silva, Losses to Bader and Hendo.

I call em like I see em and hope there were no hurt feelings by any of my comments and still plan to continue to be respectful to all other geust on this site

The stoppage MAY have been premature, but Cung had taken a lot of punishment already so it was in no way 'bullshit'. Was really happy to see Silva win, and I hope he retires on a high note. I really do not want to see Belfort vs. W. Silva.

I'm gonna have to agree. That was a bad stoppage, and Wand was hammer fisting way at the back of his head. Defiantly a bad stoppage.

great improvement (this time) for wandy as far as defence goes...I've NEVER seen wanderlei backing away that much. but concerning everything else I saw the old wanderlei last night. looping aggressive punches, MUAY THAI CLINCH and devastating knees, leg kicks etc...

if he keeps doin what he did this fight I see him win a couple more fights and don't agree to him having to retire. he just has to keep protecting himself.

Agreed. When Wandy is patient and technical he is top 2 at MW behind Anderson. It is just too bad that he tends to be really undisciplined.

Stoppage was just. He was briefly going for the take down but Wandy stuffed it and was raining down strikes that would caused some serious damage if the ref hadn't of stepped in. I'm hoping though that Cung gets another go in the Octagon.

I disagree as to the stoppage but I think you will get your wish as to seeing him in the Octagon again. After that first round there is no way the UFC will drop him. He is way too exciting a fighter.

Hope they match Cung Le up against a wellknown guy like Sakara, Rivera or Dollaway. Then he may be able to win a fight. Also think he can fight 170.

For Wandy: I really don't know who he should fight in Japan. I think the UFC is going to give him a winable fight. But I don't see him beaten any top 20 guys. Then you have to look at guys like Tom Lawlor and Brad Tavares.

Are you retarded? Wandy can beat anyone short of AS at MW when he is patient like last night. He only loses when he is reckless. Are you saying Bisbing isn't top 20? As to Cung, he almost KOd a patient Wandy. He too is very dangerous at MW.

most disappointed with Cung Le. He was badly out of shape and paid dearly for it. the old Cung Le wouldn't have got caught with half the shots he did last night. Still got a good arsenal of moves but quite slow and terrible cardio wont cut it in UFC no matter how versatile your striking game is.

I hope Silva retires as he is also past it and all this fight will do is delude him and maybe some fans he can still cut it, which will only see some brutal whooping somewhere down the line.
