UFC 128 Results: Jon Jones destroys Shogun Rua, wins UFC Light Heavyweight Title

> Poor 5

At the age of just 23, Jon Jones defeated Mauricio Shogun Rua to become the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion of the World. Jones dominated Rua throughout three rounds of their encounter, once again with incredible wrestling skills and improved striking skills.

Shogun had a very little to offer against Jones, surprisingly looking exhausted after the first round. The exiting Champ was unable to execute his trademark leg kicks, as well as other aspects of what is considered as one of the best striking capabilities in MMA.

As for Jones, the young King played his regular game of unorthodox strikes and unstoppable takedowns. Jones was cautious in Shogun's guard, and in general, was not tempted to finish the fight quickly.

The right moment came in Round 3, when Jon Jones capitalized on Shogun's poor position on the ground, unleashing hell with elbows and punches from the top. Shogun was forced to get away after suffering a vicious knee to the ribs, as Jon Jones chased the multi-time MMA Champion to claim what he considers his destiny.

Jon Jones is now 13-1 in his MMA career. But who can stop him? Rashad Evans will be the next in line for the young phenom, in what can surely develop into another bad blood match-up between two former teammates.

Shogun is ring rusted.. he hasn't competed in a while, and its not the first time shogun has had ring rust.. he had it when he started in the ufc after pride was done.

Jon Jones is overrated just like rashad and the rest of the jackson crew.

Bones is an absolute MONSTER! I don't see anybody beating him at 205. I've never seen anyone brutalize Shogun so effortlessly.

i knew you delusional idiots were going to make excuses about ring rust. Did you see Shogun quit at the end, right after he got dropped, i seen him tap the ground. Even if shogun showed up 200%, it still wouldve been the same result. suck on these nuts, pridefc. biitch ass hater.

I agree. The only guy out there that could possibly trouble Jones is Silva.

He has better striking & this would be the greatest test of his MMA career. He could go out on the highest note with the 185 & 205 belt if he won.

I would love to see how Silva gets around Jones's reach. If it stayed standing it would be amazing. We know Silva has KO power & vicious Muay Thai.....

I think a petition should be started to tell Dana that we don't want GSP v Silva but Jones V Silva.

@ Pride FC - Shogun might of had ring rust but Jon Jones most likely would have beatin him anyways. As soon as i saw a jon jones fight i knew right away this kid had potential champion written all over him. Just amazing performance by Jones!

The result is in. It's official. Did you see Shoguns face???????

The whole toolbox was thrown at him for fun & he had no answers. He's not equipped to beat Jones.

He could have been finished in R1 but for Jones having too much respect.

Even if soccer kicks were allowed Shogun would have lost.

    Hi PrideFC,

I am certain you are able to support the statement that Jon Jones is overrated because you have a right to express your opinion.

    To help me understand,

Who specifically are you comparing Jon Jones to in order to describe him as overated?

How should the entire world judge the specific elements of this performance in order to agree with your position? Would everyone agree with your overrating?

What made it seem possible to rate Jon Jones as over rated?

    Cheers

I don't really believe that Rua came into the cage out of shape, I think his game plan off his back was to go for a leg and either submit Bones or use the underhook to get back to his feet. Jones kept on him and partially obstructed his airways by covering his face or pressing his forearm into his throat. Rua expended a lot of energy trying to just get back to his feet, and he did so without being able to breathe properly.

Jones had the perfect counter to Rua's strategy, something that Shogun didn't expect from the less experienced fighter, but he should have given Greg Jackson's reputation for developing the perfect gameplan. He underestimated Jones, it caused him to blow out his gas tank in the first round, and he got demolished from there.

I will not take anything away from Jones , after all i am a fan of him,

i was always on his side in every fight since his debut, but not against Shogun who is my hero since 2005.

But tonight Shogun is the same Shogun vs Forrest , slow and out of shape after a surgery. he needs at least 2 fights to get to 100%

but even at 100 i think Jones can still beat him. its 50/50

But tonight Jones was the better man and in a way im happy hes the Champ i just wish it was against another fighter and not Shogun.

I don't care if Shogun was 500% ready, he would have still lost tonight....better yet even if there were two Shoguns in the Octagon tonight, they would have both lost against J"B"J.

This is coming from a huge Shogun fan. Give the kids his props, he deserves it. The light heavyweight division is in some serious trouble.

Shogun looked scared or nervous, u could see something was wrong in his eyes when he was walking out to the cage, he was prepared, he was in shape, it was grappling with Jones, and being rocked that gassed him out.

Jones is bigger, stronger, younger, has more reach, and has better takedowns than Evans. Unless Rashad knows something that could affect Jones emotionally and make him screw up, then I don't really think there is a secret to how their fight will play out.

Shogun's biggest weakness is his wrestling. Forest Griffin beat him by putting him on his back repeatedly. He was even taken down by Machida but stood right back up because Machida doesn't have much of a top game. A great wrestler like Jones is taylor made to beat a guy like Shogun. Jones will not loose until he is out wrestled, but good luck doing that.

Obviously that fight would be great, but with the acquisition of Strikeforce there's other good possibilities too. Fedor's been known for fighting physically superior opponents and managing to snatch victory, and he was looking at dropping to Light Heavyweight. Imagine Fedor vs. Jones. Or how about Jones goes to HW and fights Overeem? Probably a little too soon to be talking about the cross-promotion fights like that, but I would totally buy tickets if they happened.

Go to any forum that had to do with ufc 128 before this win and see all the love for "shogun knocking sense into his humble head" or "Shogun is going to kill this kid" comments, where are they now? i could swear when someone rarely mentioned jones dominating shogun it got like 8 weaks.

Hilarious, i always knew this kid would win and i full on said it and i've followed shogdontun for a long time. I see how someone wouldn't see this kids previous fights and just clearly know he was something special. Ignorance blinds people or makes people stupid i guess.

I don't give a sh*t if shogun looked tired, gas out or out of shape. You are DEFENDING your f*cking title and you looked gased out? Maybe he should have brought in wrestlers to his training camp. Maybe he needs better training partners. You come to the octagon unprepared??????

Seriously some people(shogun fans) are just plain stupid. if i was Shogun i would have brought in the best wrestlers in the planet to train his ass and make sure i would not got tired after wrestling with them. You NEED to train for someone like Jones, Do they even watch footage of Jones? Plus Greg Jackson are known for they ground game!!!!!!!!

I love Shogun as a fighter and will always be one of the most exciting MMA fighters out there, but Jones made him look like he didn't train properly?

Jones is a beast. I would love to see Jones vs Silva, not GSP vs Silva.

Ok say you are Shogun, and you are fighting a Greg Jackson fighter. Wouldn't you bring a wrestler for your training????

Shogun looked tired as hell. So did Jones, but Shogun never recovered from the 1st round.

Plus Jones won the mental game a few days ago, when Shogun and his manager thought Jones was being disrespectful.

P.S. "that was all part of the mental game!!!!!"

Get over it. He did what he said he would & that's beat Shogun. I had faith in Shogun to pull it off but early in to R1 I was in shock.

Jones showed maturity & patience that fighters 10 years older would benefit from. He didn't rush Shogun early in R1 when he was hurt because he clearly respected his KO power. That is the sign of a great champ.

Jones almost looked emotionless after the fight, but I would be very sure he broke down or something similar when he got back to his changing room. He really has arrived, in style & at a phenomenal pace.

Respect the fighters & stop being assholes saying "I told you so" Enjoy the moment & just think for a moment how interesting the next few years are going to be in 205.

I for one don't give Rashad a chance. Speed, aggression & wrestling don't win a fight against an animal like Jones. That reach is sick & his strikes were sharp. Just look at what Machida did to Rashad......

Do you think Jones couldn't do worse & in shorter time?

One thing about this sport though. Never say never & anything can happen. GSP v Serra..... perfect example :)

I honestly don't see a gameplan where Rashad wins against Bones. Jon Jones is both really talented and possesses a body that shouldn't exist in his weight class. Imagine if Frank Mir were allowed to cut 20 pounds and fight at Light Heavy? It would look about like Jon Jones' fights, with the addition of broken limbs.

When Clay/ Ali, beat Sonny Liston for the first time, no one believed it was possible for such a young gangly kid to beat the bully of the Heavyweight Division.

Shogun Rua cannot be described as a bully, but he can be described as a fighter who knows how to prepare for a fight and win a fight against the best of the best.

Arguments of ring rust are not being made by professional fighters here, but by some people who stated their belief that Shogun was far too good etc. At the time of making this point, none of these people (I am aware of) mentioned that Shogun Ruas ring rust would prevent him from winning. No, instead they stated clearly and categorically that Jon Jones would be beat.

Even though I believed Jon Jones could win the fight, I did not believe I could state with certainty that either fighter would win. It seemed too hard to call.

The display put on by Jon Jones was an absolute masterclass. Jon Jones had mastered himself, he was able to utilize his current abilities and put them together in a way which could not be answered by a World Class fighter, Shogun Rua is a World Class fighter.

Jon Jones is a man on a mission, his purpose has taken him to the pinacle of the World Light Heavyweight Division in 3 years.

I suggest that for someone to challenge this position, they should be able to state specifically what analytical background they have in order to make a statement which contradicts the reality that, Jon Jones owned a great man/ champion Shogun Rua.

It is with interest I look forward to the qualified opinions of people who can rubbish the success Jon Jones has clearly and unquestionable achieved in becoming the champion.

I know Shogun is a legend of the sport but i think it was pretty obvious why Jones was the favorite and thats why he won.Apart from Machida2 what has he done in the UFC really, beat a declining Chuck Liddell who was nearing the end of his career. The comments about how Shogun was going to school Jones made me laugh though, funny how i cant hear the haters now.

Congratulations to Jon Jones. He stepped up and was much better than I thought. Not taking anything away from Jones but where the hell was Shogun's speed that he showed when he destroyed Machida?? He looked slow as shit, unfit, unmotivated and why the feck did he not use his leg kicks, his main weapon???? His leg lock submission attempts were almost embarrassing and very sloppy for someone with his jui jitsu ability. It was almost the same Shogun who lost to Forrest Griffin. It's a shame the Machida Shogun didn't turn up. Who knows, Jon Jones may still have won but we will never know.?Shogun was definitely not himself last night. VERY DISAPPOINTED and GUTTED. Now Anderson Silva can grow some balls, move up to 205 and fight Jones not GSP who he will outweigh by 50 pounds come fight night.....

How can you kick someone that far away with Jones distance? What is it with Shogun fans?

Let me guess, if they fight again, Shogun is going to win??

Jones won the fight way before it started. He was confident and mentally prepared. And he took this fight in 6 weeks notice?

PLease don't say Shogun was not himself, because he had a year to get himself in shape and not gas out.

I think you make some excellent points.

    1. Jon Jones was "ready", mentally he had already won.

    - The fight was a physical interpretation of his mental planning and acted out within the context of the pre-fight strategy.

    2. Shogun was himself, who else could he be?

    - When all else is equal it is the mental preparation which seperates the good from the great.

    - Shogun has been a great fighter in his time, and this statement doesn't discount his ability to refind more time.

    - The Shogun in that ring was not fighting as the Champion IMO, he did not exude the sort of focus/ confidence one would expect from the title holder.

Lastly, those people looking to excuse their poor predictions through coming up with reasons they cannot truly know or prove... What does it mean to be wrong about a belief you had? Is it better to appear right or have the truth??

    Interesting,
