UFC 125 Results: Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fight for a Draw
Posted on January 2, 2011, 12:02 AM by Anton GurevichDefending UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar and the challenger Gray Maynard fought to a draw at the UFC 125 main event in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Gray Maynard had a dream opening for the fight, catching Frankie Edgar with a hard punch that sent the Champ down to the canvas. Edgar tried to return back to his feet with a intuitive rollback, but Maynard continued the pressure, rocking Edgar again and again. Gray Maynard was all over Frankie Edgar, landing 97 shots (according to the UFC) in his attempt to finish the fight. But Edgar showed a true heart of the Champion, coming back again and again, and even landing some punches of his own.
Surprisingly, Edgar looked refreshed in Round 2. Now it was "The Answer's" turn to dominate, as Frankie Edgar scored takedowns and landed some hard punches on Gray Maynard. Edgar's trademark movement was back, as Gray Maynard struggled to find his way back to the dominance seen in Round 1.
Three remaining rounds were split between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. The challenger was better in the third, the champ returned once again in the fourth. Fifth round was very equal, with a slight advantage in favor of Frankie Edgar. O
In the end, it's the first draw in a UFC title fight (correct me if I'm wrong). Looking at the bigger picture, both fighters were good on striking, but Frankie Edgar surely had a better movement and stopped 90% of Gray Maynard's takedowns. Fight-wise, I would give this fight to Frankie Edgar.
I had Frankie Edgar winning Round 2, 4 and 5, but I can understand the judges who scored this otherwise. We'll have to wait and see what happens with Anthony Pettis' promised title shot, as there surely has to be a rematch between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.

good fight, kept me jumpy . (was hoping for a second tko)
what happens to the picks?
fight of the night!!!
Man, Frankie and Gray can't even finish a decision.
As far as I'm concerned May Graynard had his shot, step aside and let Pettis have his
I agree let Pettis have his shot next but I think Maynard should be given another shot straight after
That little man has a lot of heart. A draw is a lot better than a loss IMO so I'm not going to complain . This was a great fight by both fighters.
I definitely agree a good fight for both of them and Maynard did put on a good fight for fans as well.imo
judges might have got that one right
i had edgar, can understand the decision but still maynard imo did not do enough to be champion tonight or cut the draw.
the LW championship between bj penn vs caol uno was a draw, i think it ended up getting the LW division all mixed up, then sherk came and took the belt, then it got stripped for the roids, penn came back to claim his belt, edgar ended his run, and now we're back to another draw...wht a journey.
So give Pettis his shot (to unify the belt), and give maynard the winner. Seems like only way to handle this....
Thats actually not a bad idea.Get the unification out of the way and focus on the real problem at hand.
I thought the exact same thing after the decision they shouldnt hold off on Pettis
WOW!!!! I hope these LWs start getting some respect from these idots who say they're boring now. Fight of the night and fight of the year contender already!!
Maynard and Edgar will have to get it on again!!! And I bet ya'll be looking forward to it now. For those who doubted Edgar after his 2 wins over BJ and said he just had the style, well wake up and smell the coffee haters. Those who say Maynard is boring, ask how he can be in a fight of the night.
I might be overreacting, but I honestly think Maynard - Edgar took MMA to a new level last night. Pure quality. The amazing thing I like about Edgar is he gives up so much strength and size to guys like Maynard yet still competes. Truly brilliant fight by two brilliant MMA fighters.
PS: I had Edgar winning on the round/points system, but am glad a draw was called. Neither deserved to lose that one.
They both did great and I would like to see a rematch to find out who is really a true champion in that devision as well as will draw a lot of people for a remath.imo
They are both worthy champions - that is the great thing about it and probably why it ended in a draw. I think I'll be having a few quid on Edgar in the rematch though. I think if he can avoid getting caught he has more skill, but Maynards power can wreck him as we all saw.
if BJ trained he would have won
Does anyone agree that this good fight that ended in a draw is far better than the boring fight everyone was expecting with a definitive decision?
Where were these judges for the first Shogun v Machida fight?
Maynard should have won that fight
If you scored that fight according to the criteria, Edgar won it. I had it scored as:
Round 1: 10 - 8 Maynard
Round 2: 10 - 9 Edgar
Round 3: 10 - 10
Round 4: 10 - 9 Edgar
Round 5: 10 - 9 Edgar
That leaves it 48 - 47 Edgar. However, a draw was the right result on balance of the 25 minutes. Even though Maynard dominated in the first round, Edgar dominated for more of the fight overall.
Edgar won
i dont know what thats all about again... -.-
gray had his shot, wasnt able to finish edgar, edgar then turned over the fight witch i give him a ton of respekt for... and in my oppinion won the fight!!! now give pettis his more than diserved shot!!!!
To hell with the judges and their stupid decisions...Edgar won that fight in my books...bring up the next challenger!
My numbers:
Round 1: 10 - 8 Maynard
Round 2: 10 - 9 Edgar
Round 3: 10 - 9 Edgar
Round 4: 10 - 9 Edgar
Round 5: 10 - 10
Frankie was amazing and I would defenetely have to seriously rethink my lowkick ratings!
I also take back what I said about Maynard being a 100% boring fighter...he gave a great performance as well...although he sounded like a little bitch at the interview right after the fight.
