Things I learned from GSP vs. Kos

    1) GSP has great technical standup, but if he want's a KO, he needs to throw more power shots as well as his jab.

    2) Kos IS at least as good if not better than GSP as a pure wrestler. He stuffed takedown after takedown and got up every time he was taken down immediately. He only attempted 2 takedowns and completed one of them.

    3) Kos was far too predictable with that overhand right hook. He threw one uppercut and it landed- probably his best punch of the fight.

    4) I can what-if on both of these previous two points, but the fact is even if Kos mixed up his strikes better, or went for more takedowns, GSP would have probably won. He showed once again that he is the class of the Welterweight division.

    5) Hats off to Kos for giving GSP his most competitive fight since losing to Matt Serra. Yes, it was a 50-45 decision again, but unlike Hardy, Alves and Fitch (the only other guys to go the distance in a title defense against GSP), Kos was not knocked down or controlled on the ground, and GSP was not able to attempt any submissions.

Good assesment of the fight. I thought Kos should have been way more aggresive striking and not worry about getting taken down because he showed he can get back up easy.

Good assessment except maybe for number 2. Koscheck attempted 4 takedowns and completed 1, giving him a 25% success rate, whereas GSP attempted 9 and completed 4, giving him a 44% success rate. That's according to fightmetric. Still by far the best competition for GSP in terms of wrestling, but Koscheck in no way proved himself as being potentially "better". And GSP made him look like an amateur on the feet.

But Kos was able to establish control on the ground when he got that takedown, unlike GSP with his takedowns. And GSP took Kos down only because of his vastly superior striking. GSP knew Kos takedown was coming and still couldn't stop it. If you have any wrestling experience, you would be able to see that Kos is the better pure wrestler.

It's tough to be aggressive when your opponent has a reach advantage and is using the jabs and leg kicks as well as GSP did tonight. GSP is a kyokushin karate blackbelt, adn has far more striking experience than Kos. Maybe if they fight 10 times, Kos lands that bomb on the chin once and gets a win. I think he would have a better chance with relentless takedown attempts, gnp and control, but anyway you approach it, GSP has the best chance of winning. Like Kos said, he is a great champion.
