Tyson Griffin debuts at Featherweight against Manny Gamburyan in JunePosted on April 6, 2011, 03:24 AM by Joey Santosus
Former Lightweight contender Tyson Griffin is making the cut to Featherweight to face former title contender Manny Gamburyan at UFC on Versus 4.
UFC officials confirmed the bout on Tuesday.
After a respectable 7-2 run with the promotion, Griffin (14-5) suffered three consecutive losses against Evan Dunham, Takanori Gomi, and Nik Lentz over the course of 2010. Though the dreaded 0-3 streak more often than not leads to a figher's release in the UFC, Griffin's split decision loss to Lentz at UFC 123 was considered highly controversial and, as a result, he retained his spot on the roster. Once on the edge on title contention, the Xtreme-Couture product will now look to make a run at the 145-pound strap, currently held by Jose Aldo.
Gamburyan (11-5), meanwhile, transitioned to the WEC after going 2-3 in his first stint with the UFC. Once there, he won three consecutive outings before being knocked out in a title fight against Aldo last September. Though "Pitbull" was initially set to return to his former promotion at UFC 128 against Raphael Assuncao, he was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury.
While still unofficial, UFC on Versus 4 is expected to take place June 26th from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
