The man with too many nicknames, Alistair Overeem, will look to make his mark in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, debuting against Brock Lesnar in the main event of UFC 141 on New Year's Eve at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Reem was axed from the Strikeforce Heavyweight GP, but now finds himself in the UFC, (probably) fighting for a shot at the Heavyweight title. Overeem vs. Lesnar will headline UFC 141, which will also include the most recently announced Welterweight clash between Jon Fitch and Johnny Hendricks.

He's started to stand in the pocket and hesitate... not sure why... when he decides to take over and control the other his talents show, I hope he can do this in the ufc. Being on the biggest stage could make him stop and think even more, I hope not.

I don't think Reem's striking is that much better than Cain's or even JDS's or Carwin's. (Bare in mind those 3 are also really elite strikers) His kickboxing is amazing, but that's not the same as MMA striking. In a kickboxing match both guys are looking to throw strikes. In an octagon you have to be more dynamic and tactical. You have to be able to throw whilst maintaining position and octagon control. Reem's incredible hands and knees can't be used as effectively in an MMA fight (as we've seen recently) because he needs to be more tentative and can't just swarm and use his power.

This fight's so exciting. I think it all depends on how Brock takes getting hit. If he shows a bit more toughness then it'll be hard for Reem to win because I can't see him putting himself in a position to KO Brock without being taken down. Remember Cain got taken down more than once against Brock and I doubt Reem has the skills or agility to bounce back up and avoid being pinned down like Cain did. That said, it's plausible Reem could land big and GnP Brock out.

    Buzzing for this fight!

    1) Carwin is my favorite fighter in the UFC. Period. But elite striker? He is a very, very powerful puncher with great wrestling skills. But after what JDS did to him for 3 rounds, and seeing Gonzaga knock him down, you cannot seriously call him an "elite" striker.

    2) Overeem is the K-1 champion. That means he has faced the very best strikers in the world and defeated them. The best striker Cain has ever faced? Kongo. Kongo is a very good striker, but knockdowns by Mir and Barry show that he is not elite. The best striker Dos Santos has ever faced? An over the hill Cro Cop, who has been outstruck by several non-elite fighters. Not to take away anything from JDS or Cain, they are great fighters, but their striking has not been tested against the level of competition that Overeem's has. (Notice I said striking, not MMA.)

    3) I can easily see Overeem putting himself in a position to KO Brock. Frank Mir hit Brock with some big shots and knees - if Overeem lands those shots, it's lights out. Also, while his agility and TDD may not be on par with Cain's, he is significantly bigger, and has a wealth of experience. Brock will not have an easy time getting takedowns.

even werdum's stand up was better than alistairs in their recent (cage)fight. even in k1 ( the smaller) badr hari ko'd him within the first 3 minutes (as officially predicted by badr) in their last fight.

I think overeem is overrated in mma and hasn't faced competition you can compare with the likes of velasquez and jds.

I'd be curious, if he could beat someone like matt mitrione for example, who I think is gonna be a big force in the devision.

I think brock will submit him or g'n p his way to a decision.

Mark my words people. Brock Lesnar will maul Alistair Overeem. I am not a Brock nuthugger by any means. But it seesm to me Brock is ready'n'rarin to make up for the pathetic display against Velasquez and will take his frustrations out on the Reem via effective wrestling and big ol' bear hammer fists. Dont get me wrong, Alistair definitely stands a very good chance of beating Lesnar, but I for one dont see it happening.

If Reem loses, his reputation will be in tatters, whereas a win will propel him to within reach of UFC gold and prove he's an elite HW. If Brock wins he'll be the UFC poster boy again, whereas a loss could send him on an even further downward spiral and perhaps spell the end for his career as a mixed martial artist. Makes for an interesting fight. Can't wait for this one! Just hope neither of them get injured between now and the fight.

Strikeforce HW Champ, Dream HW Champ, K-1 HW Grand Prix Champ! Considering that Lesnar was the UFC Champ, losing to him wouldn't tarnish Overeem's rep. much. Not to mention that Brock can only win by smother, making it a far from impressive victory. Not trashing your comment, just tossing out my 2 cents

I already think he's elite too. However in the eyes of a lot of fans who are unfamiliar with him and his accomplishments they may be thinking he hasn't been tested as he hasn't fought in the UFC before.
