For myself and for most of us die hard legal violence fans, the first day of this year really began when UFC 125 was officially underway. It felt like a new day in America when all things could be wonderful and hope was tangable in the Las Vegas desert early in the night. The nights' fights all looked great with a couple of great finishes and exciting action. That was until I saw the main event of the evening. Strike that, rather, when I heard the judges' score of the main event of the evening. I couldn't have been more disappointed in the judging of this fight and lately, in this sport in general. Frankie Edgar won this fight on my score card 48/47. Below I have put my score card of the fight and some of the explanations on how I score fights. Food for thought.

The Way I Score Fights: At the start of every round each fighter must have 10 points. At some specific point in each round I designate one fighter to have 10 points and the other to have only 9 points or less, because of strikes, damage, takedowns, defense, overall control.

Maynard Edgar Specifics ( @fight time clock time)

Round 1    10 8    @ 3:13 the score is 10/9 Maynard.

@ 1:38 the score is 10/8 Maynard.

Three reasons why this wasn't a 10/7 round:

#1. Edgar didn't take so much  damage that he couldn't stand back up make another offensive push, he spent the last minute and a half of the round striking Grey with punches and kicks.

#2. Maynard could have gotten closer to finishing the fight, but didn't have the endurance to do so. Edgar had the endurance to start an effective comeback. 10/8 round for Maynard.

#3 What does a 10/7 round look like anyway? A 5 minute 'saved by the bell' ass whoopin?

Maynard Edgar

Round 2      9 10 @1:17 the score is 10/9 Edgar.

Round 3      10 9 @ :40 score is 10/9 Maynard

Round 4      9 10 @ 2:15 score is 10/9 Edgar

Round 5      9 10 @ :50 score is 10/9 Edgar

My Results:                      48/47       WINNER: Frankie Edgar

JUDGES RESULTS: 48/46 Maynard, 48/46 Edgar, 47/47

Did any of the judges give the first round a 10/7 for Maynard??????? Are they giving out 10/8 rounds regularly now? How did two judges see Maynard winning 3 rounds? How did 2 judges see Edgar losing 4 rounds? How did all three judges see Edgar lose 3 rounds of this fight, rounds 1,3 and............?

Round 1 Was all Maynard for 3.5 minutes. Frankie mounts small comeback for last minutes and a half.

Round 2 Maynard can't see Edgar's right hand and is breathing very heavily. Edgar looks fresh and crisp.

Round 3 Edgar stuffs two takedowns, but Maynard bloodies Edgar up again with a lot of punches.

Round 4 Three big shots to Maynards' chin, and Edgar follows with two takedowns and a knee to the head.

Round 5 Edgar stuffs all take downs, controls the slowed down pace and lands good combos.

Happy New Year all you Lowkickers.

So you scored it like this, right?

    1RD - 10/8 Maynard

    2RD - 10/9 Edgar

    3RD - 10/9 Maynard

    4RD - 10/9 Edgar

    5RD - 10/9 Edgar

    That's a 47-47! It's a draw! Do the math, dude...

And even if you don't agree, this score is totally acceptable. No absurd here.

ok so i did my math wrong late last night. Thank you for pointing that out. Even though I score it 47/47, the scores 48/46 Maynard 48/46 Edgar are still highly strange. Maybe the judges talk too much amongst themselves about what they are scoring each round? The fight was a really close draw, unless the judges gave the first round a 10/7. (which would be crazy)

So if a 10/7 round is 5 minutes of being crushed on the mat what is a 10/6 or 10/5 or 10/2? None can be complete knockouts or finishes as the ranks are useless at that point. 10/2 must be surviving the equivelent of the cage turning into lava and a meteor being hurled by your oponent at your chin. 10/7 has it's place in this fight as it is very rare to see such a 1 sided affair just like Carwin and Brock would have been a 10/8 but still not as bad as Edgar had it.

Those numbers are rarely used but they are there for times like this.

I had the first round scored 10 7 Maynard and every other round for Edgar including the 3rd which I thought Edgar won by getting in more strikes in the beginning of the round and ending the round with a solid guillotine.

It was a draw on the the educated person's card. Besides if there is this much debate about who won, it pretty much seems right to call it a draw.

I was happy with a draw, then on watch back thought edgar won it, but we gonna get to see a rematch so I'm more than happy with that.

Scoring wise I think the draw was a good decision, but I think there is something to be said for Frankie not gassing, and controlling the later rounds. Virtual win for Frankie?

Yes agreed, virtual win for Frankie. He should view this as a confidence booster for handling Maynard most of the fight.

    i could see 47-47 or 47-46 frankie

either way (frankie, gray or draw) it was close to call, and i'd say the loser deserves a rematch anyway.

pissed for pettis though. can't wait to see him fight again, and i'm not sure if anyone can finish ben hendo.

I think Pettis and all the other wec fighters are not on the same level as the UFC fighters...

I think Pettis would have lost to either of these fighters.
