TUF 13 Finale: Clay Guida welcomes Anthony Pettis to the UFC with a Unanimous Decision Victory

"The Carpenter" Clay Guida fought a perfect fight, and walked away with a clean 30-27 Unanimous Decision victory over the former #1 Contender Anthony "Showtime" Pettis. Guida dominated Pettis during all three rounds, thanks to excellent movement and explosive takedowns. Pettis had no answer to Clay Guida's takedowns, which eventually cost him valuable points on the judges scorecards.

Still, "Showtime" managed to display a bit of his trademark creativity. Pettis unleashed a series of unorthodox kicks, but none of them landed or threatened Guida in any way during the fight. With the majority of fight taking place on the ground, Pettis' gound game was his most important asset during the fight. Pettis had a couple of great moments, such as armbar in Round 2 and the sweep in Round 3, but again "Showtime" struggled to convert these moments into a finish.

Guida is now 29-11 (and not 27-8) in his MMA career with four consecutive victories inside the Octagon. "The Carpenter"  now finds himself in the mix for a shot at the UFC Lightweight title, but with fighters like Jim Miller, Gilbert Melendez, and of course Gray Maynard also being on the radar, it looks like Guida will have to prove his worth once again before getting a shot at the belt. As for Pettis, "Showtime" now finds himself once step behind in the UFC Lightweight division, and could face the winner of George Sotiropoulos vs. Rafael Dos Anjos fight (UFC 132).

    Predictable fight.

Striker with average TDD = Superman

Good wrestler with crazy cardio = Kryptonite

Just wish Clay could have the sub at the end to boost my picks.

There is no way Guida is beating Edgar. They have equal energy. Edgar has better footwork, better boxing, better wrestling. Edgar will destroy Guida. I like Guida. He is a good and very entertaining fighter but Edgar will have his way with him.

I kind of agree, but you've got to accept the reality of the wrestling orientated scoring system in place at the moment. Guida avoided the subs and stayed active on top - according to current rules he won fair and square.

If it was a Pride match maybe it would have been different...

I disagree 100%. The whole time Guida was on top he was controlling Pettis's position and landing shoulder punches. They may not look like much but they earn points and they do hurt.

Pettis has a great future. Anthony's ground game and striking are well above average but he needs to improve his TDD. He would have been taken down at will against Edgar or Maynard.

As for this bout, I felt as if Guida was just trying to hold onto Pettis for most of the fight. Clay did utilize shoulder shots and try improve his position but he caused minimal damage and refused to attempt a single submission. Pettis, on the other hand, enabled wrist control and constantly attacked with submissions off his back for most the fight.

As for the stand up aspect of this bout (which was also minimal), I felt Pettis landed the better shots as well. Guida did land a couple but without a doubt Anthony won the stand up war.

I scored it 29-28 for Guida. 80% of Clay's takedowns counted nothing for me. What really gave Guida the edge, in my opinion, was his submission defense and the final 2 minutes of the bout (where Pettis had his back and Guida reversed/escaped).

Pettis is only 24. Trust me, he's got a future but he just didn't win tonight.

people should know that wrestling is a very big part of MMA especially in controlling in where do you want the fight to happen. people who complains should stick in watching k1 or boxing.

Look, I'm a Jon Fitch fan -- and I believe if you can't stop the takedown then it's your own damn fault... BUT I think the system currently in place will be the downfall of MMA. Alot of wrestlers are coming into the sport with just a wrestling base and look for the Lay-N-Pray or to push their opponents up against the fence for three entire rounds.

Call it what you want but that is not fighting nor can you be called a warrior if all you do is push and lay on an opponent. Guys like Fitch, Koscheck, Sherk, Bader, Lesnar, Velasquez, Marquardt, Johnson Faber and even GSP try to finish fights.

Lay-N-Praying is just the lowest form of the fight game. It usually means the fighter is one-dimensional or has no heart or is too afraid to take any risks.

Clay manage to make an exciting fighter look bad

and not because hes better , but because he lay on him and try to make him tap with his stinky hair , i bet Clay dosen't take showers for days before a fight as part of his so call " Game plans"

That was just painful to watch, The only thing worth watching was Showtime working on his bjj from his back.

What reality? Pettis show his stand up is so much better than Guida that Guida didnt dare to strike with him, and his Jiu Jitsu look very good!

He just needs to improve his wrestling to stop UFC fighters to LnP him

He is still one of the best Lightweights, Guida is not better than him just a better wrestler, Pettis leave that fight with out a single shot taken, not even on the ground and thats Guida strong point GnP

Im not sure whats next for Guida, i mean he could even "control" edgar and win a decision , but i would not waste time watching him

    thats for sure

I agree that Pettis is better, but only because the potential this kid has. Yes by the time he'll be Guida's age hell be 4x better than him than Guida right now. But basing this fight on that alone is kinda like saying that Pettis would have won, if he had only won.

i not knocking pettis as a fighter i am just saying there was no evidence anywhere to support the claim that he could beat a top guy like guida.people act like wrestling is some kind of magical power that allows you to win fights guida won that fight because pettis's striking wasnt good enough to catch him his wrestling wasnt good enough to stop the takedown and his bjj wasnt good enough to anything of hiss back once he got there.quite simply guida for the time being is the all around supereior fighter

thats the thing about fighters coming from a wrestling background when they know they cant strike wat do they do to win fights.........WRESTLE.... examples:Rashad Evans,GSP,Fitch,Brock Lesnar, Cheal sonnen,Tito ortiz,Matt hammil, the list goes on besides the last round with guida taking his back he did NO DAMAGE AND WASNT CLOSE TOO FINISHING PETTIS AT ANY POINT OF THE FIGHT. but then again the scoring system i believe is flawed takedowns get way too much points in the judges eyes and for the most part dont acknowledge the fact that u can attack from the top position but u can also attack from the bottom position and pettis was doing much more off his back then guida from the gaurd.....BUT THATS WAT WRESTLERS DO FOR THE MOST PART..... this fight i give to ANTHONY PETTIS he literally did more and went for the finish. Guida is amazing and everything but i didnt see it in this fight ALL THE MOVING AROUND AND THE OPTICAL ILLUSION OF HIM BEING BUSY ON THE GROUND 80% OF THAT IS HIS HAIR MOVING AROUND... HES HAD GREAT FIGHTS BUT THIS WASNT IT... AND IF U DONT BELIEVE ME WATCH IT AGAIN A COUPLE OF SHOOTS TO THE BODY MOVING ALOT ......this reminds me of the king mo vs mousasi fight where king mo just layed on mousasi and got his face smashed from the fighter on the bottom

no ones complaining where just saying that guida isnt ready for the title shot. take a look at the smaller and less built Frankie Edgar what happen with him in the second fight against maynard he rocked and almost lost his belt in the first round. SURVIVED CAME BACK TOOK MAYNARD THE BIGGER AND STRONGER GUY DOWN LANDED GOOD SHOOTS ON HIM AND TOOK A DRAW.(personally i though he won but A DRAW) now take a look at some of the guys GUIDA has had problems with diego sanchez someone as crazy as he is and with cardio to match wat happen LOSS. Kenny florian got rocked with punches then submited after that fights when he went back to wrestling because he would actually stand and trade with people at one point but NEW CAMP IS SHOWING THEIR COLOR...... (WHY HAS CRAIG JACKSON GOTTEN SO MUCH BEEF FOR JUST TRAINING WRESTLERS AT HIS CAMP AKA BORING FIGHTERS WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DIEGO SANCHEZ AND SHANE CAWRWIN) some fighters nate marquart rashad evans and even jon jones hes been using his wrestling in true jackson colors.....but the guy with the takedowns and laying on top usually wins the fight....wow

dude first of all being a wrestler give the fighter an advantage of being a lame striker n a lame JJ practioner and just having to lay on an apponent n throw punches from the top the fact is takedowns are counted for alot in the eyes of the judges and thats fact that was shown in this fight and im not sating GUIDA IS LAME IN ANY OF THOSE AREAS BUT HE DIDNT DO MUCH FROM THE TOP BESIDES BE OVER ACTIVE AND THE LAST SECONDS OF THE 3RD ROUND ....

and one more time GUIDA IS AN AWESOME FIGHTER BUT HES NOT A WELL ROUNDED FIGHTER FOR THAT REASON RASHAD EVANS ISNT GONNA BEAT JON JOHNS BECAUSE TO BE HONEST AFTER THE MACHIDA FIGHT HE TURNED BACK INTO A WRESTLER.........

all around superior? pettis had a bad night, hes still capable of beating guida. the guys 22 or 23 years old, compared to guida whos like 30 and has had over 10 ufc fights. where do think pettis wil be in a few years from now? dont forget not to long ago guida was getting owned by florian and sanchez, so that just shows how much a fighter can improve from his losses. i still think pettis will be champ someday. he showed that he has more real skill and potential than guida, cuz this is guida at his max potential. still not a fan of clay.

I can tell you have never watch a fight from Pettis besides the Bendo fight

If you had watch the WEC you would know how much Pettis improves each fight, is not one fancy kick, is his whole Striking Level , his wrestling which is good for a guy who never wrestle and his Jiu Jitsu also that improves drastically like hes training with the Gracies

I don't see why everyones hating on Guida, he even told everybody what he was going to do... so its not like he promised a one punch knockout or a sick sub.

He said to us, and to Pettis, I'm going to take him down, smother him and won't let him rest. He did exactly this!

So props to a fighter coming through on his words for once!

People are acting like because Pettis has sick stand up and has great subs that Guida should stand up and trade or offer up a leg and shout "knee bar me" - you didn't see Pettis trying to take Guida down and smother him ONLY BECAUSE Guida is good at it too - you saw Pettis stick at his style of fighting, as did Clay.

Props to Clay for a good performance and Pettis tried out some more Showtime style kicks.

Why not look at it this way, now Pettis will have to have at least 2 more fights against opponents like G-Sot, Siver and Renao, those are all more exciting that waching him get out-wrestled even more by Edgar/ Maynard. Pettis is great but he needs time to come into his own.

I have to disagree. Pettis is the more well rounded fighter out of the two, clearly. If Anthony works on his wrestling/TDD, then the sky's the limit for this kid. He could very well be champion in the near future.

Man, there are some dumb people on here. You guys really think that a bunch of failed sub attempts should be scored higher than successful takedowns, ground and pound (yes shoulder punches hurt. Don't believe me? go to your local gym and let someone do that to you a few dozen times.), and ring control? Come on! If the bottom guy is doing more damage he should win but that didn't happen last night.

More so than throwing your legs up in half hearted submission attempts.

Both were not that exciting, but someone has to win (Unless you score a round 10/10), and that person was Guida. No one is saying it was flashy and that it was half the fight it could have been. But he did what he needed to do to get the win.

Pettis stayed active off his back and Guida was never able to capitalize, even in side control... at all. In addition, Anthony also controlled Clay's wrists for most of the bout.

In UFC they score wrestling first and everything after that so only in a fight with even wrestling does the other stuff even count. Pettis has to recognize this and his TDD wasn't up to par.

i agree i was a little disappointed with pettis's TDD, but all guida did on top was thrash around like a maniac to make it look like he was working from the top, and the judges are easily stupid enough to fall for that. guida will NEVER get the title, so many people jumped on his nuts when he submitted gomi, saying hes gonna submitt pettis..... his bbj sucks. guida did not impress me at all especially knowing that this is the best guida is ever gonna get, pettis could improve on that performance alot and will in the future, cant say the same about clay.
