Many Millennia ago.... There was a man; Steven Seagal, thought to be the founder of martial arts, and the grand Master of ANY kicking technique... He formed a group (of himself) and the best Brazilian Fighters across the globe to compete in a Tournament known as MORTAL KOMBAT!!!

i think this guy is pretty wacky. there is no way he taught them the kick, or even showed them how to perfect it. its a pretty straight forward angle for it, but ill give him some credit. he MAY have showed them a head fake or something

Don't understand all this hating on Segal, Segal is getting Silva and Machida to do what he does in movies and i'm all for it. Machida just like Silva acknowledged Segals influence, so stop hating and be happy we've seen another ridiculous front kick tko.

dont be guliable do you really believe that lyto a man who has trained karate for more than 20 years needs stegen segal to teach him how to do a front kick? my guess is that segal is paying these guys to go along with it in a effort to increase stevens direct to dvd movie sales. i am reasonably sure i would beat the hell out of steven segal not when he was younger but now no problem

It's true that it's hard to find legitimate footage of Seagul really fighting(at least online)..except him tossing around a bunch of little guys just running at him. However, the man never said he "taught" them the front kick or "invented" it. He said he MODIFIED it. Meaning he took what they had already and gave them suggestions to help them improve it. This is mixed martial arts where you're evolving your skillsets through different disciplines and no matter how long or hard one trains there is always something that can be done to improve. We never saw Silva or Machida knock people out with front kicks till recently so something must have happened. Not to mention that many have been using the front kick to the face lately without the KO. They said Seagul helped them modify it..Seagul said the same. I doubt they'd make that up.

I have a great deal of respect for Segal as an Aikido practitioner and a master of many weapons and he is a master, regardless of whether or not he's a bore, a bad actor and a puffed-up blow-hard, with a big ego, this is just - stupid. Steven Segal does not come from a kicking background; Aikido is not a kicking art. It is a defense oriented, re-active fighting style; whose whole focus is on the manipulation of it's opponent via one's upper limbs; not the feet.

I wish we had some video of Segal teaching this, because I've never seen him use it; again, kicking is not part of Aikido's skill set. There is a ton of video of Segal's Aikido (I watched a lot of it over the years) and I've never once see him throw a kick - never; not in a demonstration and there is no video of him actually fighting; not to my knowledge, at any rate.

For Segal to show up here and be claiming some kind of Guru status on this subject and even a fight plan, with the kick / kicking as the central strategy or coup-des gras, is laughable.

Segal getting on camera to take credit for things he doesn't deserve credit for, has become tiresome.

Again - I'm waiting for the first legitimate and repetitive use of a side-kick (ala Cung Le) to be used in The Octagon and Segal to be standing there telling us all how he invented it, taught it to the fight...heck, will probably own a patent on it at the USPO.

Again - I respect the man and his abilities and there is a great deal he has to offer, that Aikido or the soft-art in general, particularly joint manipulation and pressure points, but kicking...front-snaps, sides or any combination there of, is not one of them.

Seagal is a master of a lot more disciplines than just Aikido! People can trashtalk all they want.. but it's really more about them being uneducated. Seagal is most known for his Aikido but is also a Hapkido master (You can look at it as a mix of (a higher level) Tae Kwon Do mixed with joint locking techniques and throws from Aikido). So don't think for a second Seagal doesnt know anything about "kicks", his kicks are high level ! not to mention Seagal is a Shito-ryu Karate black belt as well..

Yes, there are rumors that Gene choked Seagal out on the "Out of Justice" filmset.. when Seagal was bragging about the fact that it was impossible for anyone to choke him out. Wrong thing to say to Gene Labell (10th degree red belt in Judo, 9th degree black belt in Jiu Jitsu) who proceeded to choke him out twice (and made him pee himself the second time by targeting one of Seagals pressure points.) I'm sure there's "some" truth to it...

I respect Seagal's accomplishments in martial arts (one of the many influences why I got into martial arts 12 years ago) but I have to call bulls***. Seagal might be a black belt in other arts but he did not, in any way, make Silva and Machida master the technique of the front kick.

Hell, I can do a front kick, double front kick, running front kick, jumping front kick and a spinning jumping front kick/tornado front kick. And I 'mastered' these techniques in my first two years in Kyokushin Karate. What exactly did Seagal do for Machida (who has practiced Shotokan Karate for over two decades) in order to perfect the front kick? Nothing. Grow up.

Its not about knowing how to kick... its about perfecting your craft... PERFECT TIMING and PERFECT TECHNIQUE !! cause it's a very effective kick... BUT.. at the same time you expose yourself...

Imagine missing your target... Machida's leg over Randy's shoulder... Randy getting a hold of his leg over his shoulder... Machida would get KNOCKED THE F***K OUT with an overhand right... or taken down and have a heavy hitting Couture on top of him pounding him out!!

There's a good reason front kicks like that are not utilized as much in MMA, especially against a wrestler... If u don't get it right, you're in trouble.. Period !

Ok... but Machida is a Shotokan Karate master, and one of the most elusive and accurate strikers in the business. Please explain to me what Seagal taught Lyoto that he already did not know about angles and the front kick?

I am a Kyokushin Karate black belt. And I've won tournaments without a sensei telling me how to perfect a white belt technique. Now imagine, Lyoto is a much stronger and experienced karate expert (achieved the rank of Koshi) mastering a technique that he had already mastered a decade earlier.

    It doesn't make sense.

This was the video of Seagal with Silva before doing the kick with Belfort way back.. (start at 4:43). You can see Steven actually helping him use the kick not to be used as pushing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEEd8jVfycg

Same thing below on Machida way back last year. (starting at 1:01)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rAWIqRbda4&feature=related

So come on guys... Seriously you can't blame a man if wanted to get credit because he just improved that kick to be used on mma and the fact he did that way back before their fights mean he might be telling the in working out those kicks..

I'm with you. I think most people here didn't watch this video all the way through. If you do you can see that Seagal clears the air explaining that he never said he invented this technique or any others, just that he modified the kick.

Think about it, the 2 guys Seagal has worked with have knocked out their opponents with front kicks - the only time we've ever seen it - and it's one after the other - clearly not a coincidence.

Clearly - he's not talking bs.

I have to disagree with you Endo, the answer lies right in front of Lyoto:

"The training was pretty much the same, but I did adapt and make some changes to it. The main changes were to my strength and conditioning. I made a lot of changes there and also to my karate. I went back and trained a lot of karate that brought me to where I am today."

Personally, I think many martial artists from across the globe respect Steven Seagal but he had nothing really to do with the perfection of the front kick. He might have been behind the inception of the technique, but that's all. The credit that Seagal has received is because of that.

Any true Master in the spirit of martial arts would not be boasting of having taught a student the winning move.

It is surreal to hear Seagal talking of teaching a 3rd degree black belt (before he met Seagal) in Karate a front kick.

What I do believe to be true is that the front kick, in all its various forms, has been overlooked in MMA for many years. A front kick, kicking with the ball of your foot, to the chin or solar plexus is a viable combat move, especially to those with speed and skill.

We all know Machida and Silva had great KO records before they met Seagal, but they both have never knocked guys out by a front kick to the face before they met Seagal. This "actor" , Seagal is legit. He may not be able to fight because of his age but he sure can train or at least give some useful tips...And why would Silva and Machida waste their time with Seagal if they think he's a joke?

    *sighs*

Like I stated above, Seagal gets the credit because he instilled the idea of the front kick inside Silva's and Machida's head. And since he is considered a hero, of course both would give credit to Steven for the kick.

Now keep in mind, this is a technique that they teach four year olds in their first day in karate. Seagal is a martial artist. A highly ranked master. No one is going to badmouth him... unless he's going around taking credit.

it is normally a push kick they teach. silva and lyoto would not waste there time training with him. they didnt say seagal put the ideal in my head they said he help them modify it and perfect it you need to watch the post interview again. how are you debate something silva and lyoto said??

Ummm because they RESPECT him. He's a HERO to many martial artists. Both Silva and Machida are adore him.

If I were being trained by Dave Camarillo and he REVIEWED his technique of the armbar -- you better believe I would give him credit because he is my IDOL.

Seriously, wouldn't you guys do the exact same thing if you were hanging out with your idol/hero?

I bet you [Silvaisking2321] would praise the hell out of Ando if he told you about the Crane Kick as well.

And you're just as delusional as everybody else who believe that Seagal held the secret to perfecting the front kick.

1st off silva says his hero is spiderman lol! you cannot find a video of silva saying seagal is his hero. anderson and lyoto would not give credit just cause they like a guy! lyoto even done it right in the ring and twice in the post fight interview! so how anderson and lyoto are saying this and getting something different is dumb.
