Shogun says Griffin screamed for stoppage at UFC 134
Posted on September 14, 2011, 07:44 PM by Trent Reinsmith
At UFC 134 Mauricio “Shogun” Rua avenged a previous loss to Forrest Griffin, stopping Griffin via first round knockout. Griffin had previously defeated Rua at UFC 76 via third round submission.
The fight at UFC 134 lasted less than two minutes with Shogun dropping Griffin to his knees with a right. Rua then followed Griffin to the ground, continuing to land rights as Griffin rolled to his back where Rua landed multiple hammer fists to the head of Griffin before the referee rushed in to call a stop to the fight.
Rua said that the fight could have been stopped earlier had the referee heard what he did as he rained punches down on Griffin, “When he was laid out on his back I heard him scream 'stop, stop!', but I couldn't stop hitting him.” – read more at FightersOnly.com via RedeTV Esporte.
Rua’s statement echoes the words of Daniel Cormier, a fighter some criticized for delivering what some said were late punches to Antonio Silva. The fighter is trained to fight until the round ends or the referee ends the fight.

Hey when you are done in a fight you are done, nothing wrong with verbally tapping - gotta remember Shogun tapped to strikes against Jon Jones (check the video)
had respect to all the Brazilian or black house guys and all of them couldnt be happy with a win they all fought hurt and have to make sure
that we all know how bad they beat the guy couldnt just of won want to rub it in a bit ...is one reason so far I love the Japanese fights they win
and all it is ...is thanks for the fight he was a hard fighter thanks....thats it full respect
i agree whitey, the title/slogan is a bit harsh and disrespectful, also says in the link that he praised griffin for his heart and conditioning etc why couldnt they give that a slogan... im sure this was misinterpreted by media and the ran with the story,
yeah shogun was getting destroyed by jones they shudda stopped it earlier its acceptable that he would tap he was finished im surprised he didnt do it earlier
STFU shogun wen u were pounding his head back and forth theres no way he could have talked. Hes just trying to make forrest look even worst cuz he choked him out. Griffins wife was going into labor so his performance is understandable
actually couldnt agree more with you griffin. Didn't know you could a)verbally tapped out while out cold and b) I dont blame griffin. Last place Id want to be while my wife is about to give birth is in Brazil, miles away, facing a guy fighting in his home country. I give Forrest mad respect just for showing up
“When he was laid out on his back I heard him scream 'stop, stop!', but I couldn't stop hitting him.” Man thats dark
Slow it down there, ive got nothing against his statement. I just get a kick out of sadistic humor.
He stopped for Machida so I guess it could be one of 2 things. He couldn't stop because Forrest previously finished him or he can't stop for a non-Brazilian :-O ... The way Forrest looked that night he probably should have stopped after he threw that slow a$$ kick and missed. He was like slow motion.
he stopped for machida because machida was OUT COLD. griffin was still conscious.
With Griffin he really wasn't checking. He said it plain and clear right there that he COULDN'T stop.
there's a big difference in machida laying out cold on the mat and shogun showing mercy by stopping, and shogun continuing to hit a moving Forrest Griffin.Griffin wasn't defending but he was still moving shogun didn't have a choice.
To be honest, I thought Rua is a humble fighter. However, I can't understand that he forgot his brutal lost to Jones. Either, he became too confident in himself, either he lost his humbleness in his new camp with Cordeiro.
I like Rua, but this seems like the ultimate disrespect to another fighter. Why say this? If I was Griffin, I'd be pissed.
Shogun is just saying what he heard
and Shogun didnt do nothing wrong in that fight
Forrest got lucky he fought Shogun the first time
coming from 2 surgeries , this time he wasn't that lucky and fought a healthier Shogun not a full potential but around 70% enough to put Forrest out ,simple because Shogun is levels above Forrest
Shogun stop when the ref call it. so Shogun did nothing wrong.
Of course he did nothing wrong in the fight.
But who wants to be the guy that screamed "stop, stop." Nobody. Rua won the fight, there is no need to say this about Forrest.
must be nice to live in a fantasy world. Shogun was nothing for Jones. I expect to see Silva vs Jones before I ever see a Jones vs Shogun rematch. Shogun got ran through, hes gonna have to fight his way through the likes of Davis, Evans, probably Machida again before they even think of a title shot. Honestly, I don't see him getting by Evans
then why did he carry on hitting griffin like he stole something?
just lost all respect for shogun.
who even gives a **** about someone hitting people after there KO'd its not done till the ref says it is...if you dont like seeing people get hit or you dont like getting hit dont par take in the sport and dont watch it plain and simple
I would LOVE to see him drop weight into the next lower division!!!!!
