Shogun calls Jones "too damn good"

While Jon Jones can count many of the biggest names in our sport as fans, another name can be added, worlds number 1 lightheavyweight and newly crowned champion Mauricio Rua. Shogun took time out of his celebrations after winning the gold this past Saturday night against previously undefeated Lyoto Machida, to give his opinion on the top ten lightheavyweight, Jon Jones.

Speaking to sherdog.com, Rua had this to say about Jones:

“He is a great young fighter, too damn good, and he’s coming with everything in our division. He is very good in wrestling. I think he and Cain Velasquez are the two guys with the best wrestling in MMA today, together with Georges St. Pierre. He’s a very good wrestler, very dangerous. He’s a guy who will give a lot of people trouble.”

Jones next bout is against Vladimir Matyushenko, and will take place on August 1st, once again headlining a UFC: On Versus card.  He is currently 10-1 since making quick work of Brandon Vera in march. Vera suffered a broken orbital bone due to a viciously effictive elbow from Jones.

As for Rua, he seems to have overcame the dip in form which saw him in a lacklustre bout against Mark Coleman, followed by a loss to Forrest Griffin.Since then, we have seen him return to a form not seen since his pride days, with a ko win over the Iceman, followed by his pair of matches against Lyoto Machida. He now rests comfortably on top of the pile in UFC, with his first defence expected to be against Rashad Evans or a rematch with Rampage Jackson.

o for sure! i dont understand why is Dana putting him on the side!

maybe his saving Jones for 2011 who knows

but i dont see no one beating Jones! even Shogun would have trouble specially since Shoguns weak point is his wrestling

i would love to see Jones vs A Silva!!

I have to disagree -too soon to called Jon Jones too damn good for LHW in the world. He has a lot of potential to build up and ,maybe in the near future ! He defeated "American Sicko " not someone like Rampage,Rashad ,Lidell,Forest...and believe it or not even Ryan Bader still questionable ?

I would like to see Jones fight either Machida or Couture (if he beats Toney) next if gets passed Vlad.

I have been on the Jones bandwagon since his first fight in the UFC and I believe without a doubt he will be a champion one day, however I do not think he would beat Shogun in a fight today. To fight a guy like Shogun you just need to be a bit more accurate and composed then Jones is today and I think he leaves to many openings, openings that Shogun would exploit.

Also one has to remember that Shogun himself is only 29, he can fight at the highest level for another 10 years but there is no doubt that Jones will be challenging Shogun for that belt sooner or later.

I think at such a young age and not a whole lot of experience of jon jones, a. silva would be able to counter strike jones to the mat in a hurry. but jones defiantly needs to gain more experience before he fights the bigger names but he is way to damn good for his age kinda like jose aldo!

Jon Jones reminds me of a young Anderson Silva (very athletic, fast, strong etc...) with a wrestling background, however, he still has to work on improving his striking a little bit. This kid is very talented and if ( IF )he continues to work and train really hard, he will become one of the best LHW champions in UFC history.

They dont have similar styles. Jon jones is a wrestler, anderson silva is a muay thai fighter. Anderson silva isnt particularly strong either, he doesnt have that wrestling type of strenght.

They LOOK similar though, black and tall. Other than that, not that similar, apart from slightly crazy standup.

And the best LHW is UFC history? How can you possibly know how the sport will evolve and how good fighters will be in the

I agree with shogun 100% jones is a beast and is very good. The thing is he is very young, and in this dog eat dog world dana will put him in a position where he will get hammered by a more experienced guy who will exposed jones heart and stand up. his stand up is poor to be honest. And he looked like he wanted to run home when Bonnar was chasing him down in the third round. He cant deal with people who can take a beating and come back in his face. And that is just my observation but it showed me where he is at when it comes to heart.I just dont think he has enough of it. He should be a heavyweight he look monstrous in size compared to vera and bonnar.Have you guys noticed that his shoulders look like a heavyweights im sure he cuts pretty hard

Forrest is easlily a tough fight for him. Forest is very good in his BJJ and he has been tested. Everyone is remembering the fight with AS but just remember how Forrest felt going in, He said he felt like he was being fed to the dogs for some good money. He new he wasn't ready but he has mad heart and saw $$$ for doing it. It was more like a dare for him. AS is probably the only one that could expose Forrest in that fashion. Jones might win but it would be a hard fought battle.

In response to your comment. shogun against Lil Nog was a classic struggle and both tasted canvas. And against rampage we anyone who watches the fight again will tell you today that rampage today would destroy rampage back then. To be honest shogun isnt as good as he once was no matter what people say just because he one against predictable Liddel and defeated a washed up coleman.Rampage has gone from strengh to strengh ever since his loss to shogun and that makes a potential rematch mouth watering.im already getting my bib

the light heavy is by far the deepest in the UFC. Chuck was the only guy to defend the title more than twice in a long long time. Shogun has his work cut out for him. My favorite division now by far.

@riphisheadoff, you say mention Shogun defeating coleman and liddell but fail to mention Shogun knocking out the seemingly unbeatable Machida, how doesn't that prove that Shogun is back to full form?? I think the rematch with Rampage would be more competitive then the last time but it would still result in the same outcome

The problem with your statement there is "but it would still result in the same outcome" yea highly impossible, idk if you know this but Shogun won by soccer kicks against Rampage the first time which means kicks to the head of a downed oponent so just because of the unified rules i dont think Shogun will ever be "back at full form".

@jackthedrinker89, when i said "it would still result in the same outcome" i obviously meant that Shogun would be victorious like he was in the first fight, idk if u no this but Shogun was destroying Rampage way before he soccer kicked him, he beat him up for about 7 mins with knees and punches, Rampage was done way before Shogun threw the 2 or 3 soccer kicks, crediting Shoguns victory only on soccer kicks is wrong

Jones is 11-0, not 10-1. I doubt Matt Hamil claims that DQ as a victory. He looked like he was in a horrible car accident, shoulder was mangled and broken, they almost had to carry him out.

His wrestling is right up there with Lesnar, and Cain, and GSP.

I totally agree. I still do not understand that DQ. I mean really? DQ? Its not like that blow is what took Hamil out of the fight. Its not like it was a decisive factor in the match in any way, shape, or form!! Yet, in the Vera fight, when Vera struck him while he was down, it was a warning!! Just last Saturday for instance when the ref thought, I am just saying THOUGHT, that Daley landed that huge nasty knee, he was only going to deduct a point!!!! Yet for some reason unknown to me, Johnny Bones was handed a loss that forever blemished his perfect record. With that aside tho, did u notice how sportsman like he was about it? Very admirable! Just smiled, shrugged it off and called it a learning experience!!

I wouldn't say those elbows weren't severely effective, they did mess Matt up pretty bad. I assume his shoulder got mangled in the take-down though. But you're right about there being no consistency. These Refs are really still learning how to officiate a match. Boxing is soooo much easier to Ref, and that's probably where these guys got most of their background, in Boxing. Some rules they just completely forget about. Like when they stand a fight up to give a warning or something, the person not being warned has the option to return to their positions or not. They'll get back down in to full guard or side control or whatever it was, and they start from there when the Ref says fight. How often do you see that though? I've only seen it a few times.

And, timidity is NEVER applied. Why not? Give the refs a yellow card, it's not too difficult. Anderson would have lost 3 points or been DQ'd in the Maia fight, if the rule was applied. Houston Alexander would have been DQ'd in the Kimbo fight. That rule is there to push the fight, so while I see people pissed off at Anderson for running around like a jack-ass, they should also be pissed off about the Ref who was ignorant of the rules. If he gave one warning to Anderson, or took a point from Anderson for timidity, that would have stopped the whole thing and it would have been a real fight. That's what the rule is for...

If you do an illegal move and your opponent cant keep fighting, you lose by DQ. If your opponent can still fight properly, then you lose points and the fight continues.

Houston would likely still be in the UFC if the timidity rule had been applied. While it was appropriate to cut him, he had a lot of fans, was exciting to watch, I wish I could still see him fighting. The Ref dropped the ball.

i think that the UFC needs to start ranking the fighters somewhat better. i know big names make fights but it seems like lots of fights lately have been about hype but hype doesn't ensure good fights. lots of the fights lately have been essentially nothing but hype, hardy v GSP,A.silva v Mia, everyone who really looked at what those challangers brought to the table knew those fights were "give me's".

F the UFC american idol style, lets see who has more people hanging off his balls, match making system. they need to just make a clear, open, and fair ranking system.set simple who fights who rankings 20v_15+/-1,15v_11+/-1,10v_7+/-1,6v_4+/-1,3v_1-1, rank them overall, wins, losses, method of win/defeat,division's divided accuraccy stat's. it will really help clear up the standing of fighters, which will attract more boxing fans,gamblers,etc....

i like jones, i think he will be a force and looks to have the tools to get the title around his waist. yet we really cannot talk about the quality of opponet that he should be facing, when we cannot for certaint state the quality of any fighter he has faught. i'm not a big fan of gate keepers, i don't want to seea guy like chuck liddel getting Ko'ed twice a year, every year, untill he retires and hear about how it was a test for the guy KOing him. hypes nice but hype doesn't ensure quality, but quality does tend to build hype.

the UFC spread rumors about the yakuza pulling prides strings, while at the same time they openly engage in essentially "fixing fights" they wan't to "build him up" we used to call that cracking cans or beating bums. the mafia actually used to fix fights that way, have promoters be "fuzzy" on the stats of fighters, talk the "can" up, then feed a killer a can and watch the suckers bet on the can, the mob owned or recieved cuts from casino's so a big house pay off was the reward.

I think Jones/Shogun wold be a great fight, however, I firmly believe that the UFC wants to see more out of this kid first (meaning milk the cash cow) before he gets a title shot. Right now Jones is a great headliner in non-title events, so why wouldn't they keep doing it? I definitely see a title fight for him in 2011, assuming Bones keeps winning.

Not to mention that they have just birthed this UFC on Versus deal and Jones has been their headline for that event thus far. As long as they have him bringing in numbers to make that deal a success he is not going to be training for fights in the big show.
