Shogun Rua knocks out Lyoto Machida to capture the UFC Light Heavyweight Title

Brazilian Muay Thai specialist Mauricio "Shogun" Rua answered on all the questions created by the UFC 104 controversy, by knocking out the previously unbeaten Lyoto Machida at the main event of UFC 113 in Montreal. Shogun Rua chased Machida around The Octagon, finally catching "The Dragon" with a good combo, that sent the fellow Brazilian out cold to the canvas for the first time in his career.

The sold-out event was held at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, on May 8th.

I haven't jumped in the wagon yet... I think Shogun can beat Machida, but I don't think any other fighter in 205 in can beat him. Like they said in the Countdown "Shogun is the antidote to Machida" But Rampage nor Rashad can **** with Machida...

No longer the "champon" but still the "tampon". I'm sure he and Ed are in denial; maybe they can blame Dana; I'm sure the loss had nothing to do with him being grossly over-rated. Right.

Maybe he just needed to drink more piss.

Kick him while he's down, that sounds like fun! STFU! Lyoto is a great mixed martial artist and not one bit "over-rated". Shogun is a beast and was able to impose his will and get the KO. You take away from Shogun's victory by saying sh*t like that!

Everyone is overrated in the UFC. Fights are blown up with hype and talk. But fighters back it all up by winning. Shogun and the Dragon are both extremely prideful and talented in their fighting style. If there is ever a third fight, the whole world will definitely be watching!

Now that Machida is no longer the champion and Anderson only has two more fights at MW according to DW, I think it is only a matter of time before A.S. takes the LHW title. Now it will stop changing hands every couple of fights.

i think shogun would beat forrest but i am aware that some people carry other peoples number as well. There is a chance that forrest knows how to shut him down while shogun defeats all the ones that defeated him. Everyone is doing what they always did, after a new champ they start acting like the new one is indestructable. I feel shogun is deserving but we should wait 2 or 3 fights to see if he is undisputed. great fight!

Not sure what you mean but if you are stating that Forrest is every bit good enough to hang with the best I agree with you so don't be offended. All I am saying is Forrest might have the style to beat Shogun over and over even if Shogun has the style to beat all the fighters Forrest lost to.

Agreed. Machida is still great. I've been a Machida fan for a while and last night changes none of that. I actually don't think Shogun fought the best Machida. Not to take anything away from Rua but Machida looked tentative and his striking was extremely inaccurate compared to his usual pin point accuracy. I don't know if it was his hand like Rogan said or if the first fight was in his head or what but Machida looked bad last night. Yet, even so, he was winning the round based on take downs and strikes combined (although I think Rua may have landed more strikes, I'd have to count) until he got caught. I'd find a third fight interesting but Machida will probably have to climb the ranks or wait for AS to take the belt before that happens and Rua might beat a 100% Machida too. I still think Rua lost the first fight but it was damn close and one bomb could have taken it away from the judges on either side in that fight.

Bruce Lee was not a Karate practitioner. He trained Wing Chun and then created Jeet Kune Do by mixing Muay Thai, Savate, Boxing, Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu. Does any of that sound familiar to you?

I am sure none of it sounds familiar to him. He's a couch potato. And Bruce Lee times are not over. Dan Inasanto, Bruce Lee's training partner, is the reason Muay Thai has become part of the standard of integrated martial arts. He is the one that brought Ajarn Chai into the fold outside of Thailand. Inasanto is also one of the most vital martial artists alive. Carrying on the tradition of Bruce Lee, who would have embraced things like Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu if he were still alive. Basically srsymma, you have no idea what you are taking about and look the fool.

Agreed but he did embrace jiu jitsu and muay thai. The way Lee threw hook kicks and round kicks was pure muai thai and he incorporated things like arm bars and neck cranks from jiu jitsu. You should check out Bustillo too. My instructors trained under him and he does a seminar at their gym every year. I've missed him the last two years so I am really hoping to attend this year. The guy is getting old and he won't be here forever!

Cool. Thanks for the tip. I have not seen his seminars in my area before (Pacific North West). I get to Inasanto, Rick Faye, Ajarn Chai and Machado Bros. seminars pretty regularly. I train JKD as part of my curriculum though, so I would be all over a seminar of his if I had a chance.

Machida takes Shogun down 2 times and didn't P4P or elbow at all , just like kids playing westling and when he get into striking range pretent like nothing wonna happen Oh! man let someone like Shogun landed over right hand with all power crush into anyone face like that ,I guarantee you the man 7'4 ft tall like Shag over 300 bls wonna go down with it. And his performance in that fight just so suck .

I like Shogun to be the champ too,so don't matter.

Congratulations to Shogun a deserved victory over the best man in the division hands down - I agree with the guy who said only Shogun would beat Machida, Machida destroyed every fighter that come in his path - No matter their background - I feel that the title puts pressure on fighters that only true champions BJ GSP ANDERSON LIDDELL etc can handle - how many times have you seen great fighters lose the belt very early RASHAD FORREST and now MACHIDA - be good to see how Shogun handles the pressure - the weird thing is I dont think that Machida had the power to beat Shogun but both RASHAD and RAMPAGE defiently do either fight will be interesting - The best Lyoto Machida is the one without the belt around his waist and im sure we will see him again soon - When Lyoto learns how to be a true champion he will cement himself as one of the greatest fighters in MMA History.

Now Machida isn't at the top no more he is in a big race with Anderson Silva in the 205 ladder - If Anderson wins the race he will be holding 2 belts for a very long time no doubt - Shoguns a excellent aggressive fighter but Anderson feeds off of aggreSsive fighters if those two fought there is only one winner in my eyes.

The only way Anderson Silva will not be the future LHW champion is if Lyoto Machida retains the crown - MMA is crazy!!!

But 1 thing is for sure the...

MACHIDA ERA IS FAR FROM OVER!!!

Machida is a very accompished fighter. he was 16-0 at one time and had one of the highest mma records. every champion looses a fight and bounces back and becomes better. i think machida will comeback and dominate again sometime. but for now its shoguns time to prove he deserves that belt. and that light heavyeight division is a tough SOB
