Shane Carwin pulls out of UFC 125 bout with Roy Nelson; Mirko Cro Cop offers himself as a replacement
Posted on October 26, 2010, 01:57 PM by Jamie KennedyFormer UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin has pulled out of his UFC 125 bout with Roy 'Big Country' Nelson. Speaking via his website, Carwin had this to say:
"I am going to pull out of the fight with Roy Nelson. As you may know I have been having some back pain, I had an MRI scan yesterday and I have some damage that might require surgery. If the doctors do not have to perform surgery then I will be out for 8 - 12 weeks. If they do have to perform surgery, I don't know how long I will be out of action for"
Carwin then added:
"I was really looking forward to fighting again and obviously this is a very disappointing turn of events. My manager said - you can't fight the best fighters in the world with just heart, It is time to stop limping up the mountain and get healthy so you can climb on your own terms. I have been up all night thinking about this decision and what I might be missing by making it."
Carwin later tweeted:
"Roy Nelson and my engineering boss are the only ones happy about this".
If all you die hard fans out there are wondering who will now step in to replace Carwin at UFC 125, you may be pleasantly surprised as Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic has showed some interest, Mirko had this to say on the matter:
"It would be an interesting fight for sure. I think Roy (Nelson's) style matches up very well with mine, we could have a good fight. I didn't hear anything from the UFC yet, but lets see if they call me".
Carwin is obviously not happy pulling out of this fight, but it does open up doors for other fighters to progress through the Heavyweight ranks - Be it Big Country or Cro Cop, nothing is official yet regarding the replacement but with Brendan Schaub getting back to back wins maybe he will look to avenge his loss to Big Country and push himself one step further toward the title mix, Brock Lesnar might even be interested as I'm sure he's eager to get back into the Octagon sooner rather than later.

i would like to see that fight, but i think brock is taking time off so i don't know if he would take it.
I'm just glad we won't have to see Big Country get murdered his funeral would have saddened me
agree while i am a nelson fan an am amazed by what he does the truth is he is a small 205'er who is 45 pounds overweight and carwin would crush him. as much as i like to see a guy like roy compete with the big boys i think he needs to drop to 205 otherwise he is going to hit a wall when it comes to top talent at hw.

You know, that fight actually makes sense. They are both coming off of losses. Brock is bigger and has superior wrestling but Nelson has vastly superior grappling and stand up so it could be very interesting.

how bout a rematch from the grapplers quest 2001 or whatever it was.. MIR VS BIG COUNTRY... could be good.. they have same strengths .. good JJ, so so wrestling, decent striking, AND, its a rematch

lesnar would kill him self for sure if big belly beat him! i dont think lesnar would let nelson beat him! brock got him!
Brandon Shaub def. deserves it, but give him a little more time to get ready.

Brock is sidelined for six months. Dana should get todd duffee back in the ufc and have him fight big country
Nog vs Roy Nelson, Mir vs Pat barry winners fight each other for a tittle shot, Carwin vs Brock for the next tittle shot after JDS.
Carwin and Brock already fought. and with brock not having fought a wide mix (only a total of 7 fights) id like to see him fight a bigger vareity that the HW division has to offer. I know JDS is held up in his title shot, but lets see Nog, Cro Cop, even Pat Barry. I'd like to see Brock work his way through more fighters especially since both of his last fights looked similar in the first round.. only difference Carwin gassed out and Velasquez didnt.. Maybe even have Carwin vs Velasquez. Id like to see that!!

not gonna lie i would like to see what travis brown could do against Roy Nelson. he looked pretty against Kongo

@Jizzle, I agree, honestly I dont even want to see Cro Cop fight anymore if hes not going to use his kicks, if the same Cro Cop who fought Mir comes to fight Nelson I'm going to b cheering for Nelson to KO him

Man, never thought of it but Roy and Crocop is a good matchup.
as much as i love watching cro cop's old fights his more recent fights are not good and i am not very interested in him fighting nelson.

Exactly what I was thinking. I just picture Cro-Cop standing there with his hand raised high in the air going Ooohh, Ooooh, Pick me! Pick me!
I want to see Cro Cop any time! Nelson vs Mir is a good match up also, but I think Mir will be offerred to fight Brock or Nog.
When I think other alternatives, I don't see any! After all, the UFC HW division is not that deep as everybody thinks. After JDS, I don't see any worthy opponents for Cain.

Cro Cop is not gonna kick at a ground guy which is like a lion without his fangs so no Cro Cop but some of the other fights you guys mentioned very interesting
is the only way to guarantee good entertaining stand up wars grapplers only like to grapple when they feel they have a major advantage unless thats all they can do
To be fair with Roy, Cro Cop or Nogueira would be "nice" match ups for him. Brock or even Mir are too big for Roy, you wouldn't stand a chance with either...
That said, if ever Roy intends to be a contender, he will have to drop to 205, his frame is too small for a heavyweight and that belly is only useful against unskilled fighters of the likes of Kimbo, top fighters will always crush him as long as he stays as fat as he is...

Cro Cop seemed nothing like the Cro Cop of old. It was like his fire has gone out for MMA, so I don't know why he's so eager to get back in there and fight. I think he should retire. No good chasing the past, ask Liddell.
