Shane Carwin: Looking to silence the doubters when he returns from surgery
Posted on October 22, 2011, 07:34 PM by Trent Reinsmith
Shane Carwin recently announced that he faced a decision that may have given some fighters pause, retire from active MMA competition and avoid surgery for an undetermined amount of time or undergo surgery now and keep on fighting. Carwin, opted for the latter.
With that decision made, Carwin will undergo his second surgery in a little more than 12 months. Carwin had surgery on November 2 of last year to repair damage to his neck. On November 15 of this year he will go under the knife to keep a disc in his lower back from pressing into nerves, a situation that he said was causing his body to freeze up while training.
Carwin expects to back in the spring/summer of 2012 and when he does come back to the UFC’s Heavyweight division he will look to make a run for UFC gold, "If I didn't believe I still had a title run left in me, I would retire. I feel like I still have some things to prove. I have unfinished business. I love the doubters." – for more see MMAFighting.com

carwin is a good gate keeper, id like to see him fight bigfoot to see where they are both at
keep your eye on the gate Carwin, don't blink, your such a good gatekeeper. don't let anyone pass through that doesn't deserve it.
part of the reason he not going to be top HW is that he getting old too, he close to 40 already i can't see him getting the belt.
Carwin is old and I would love to see him fight Big Foot but he is no gate keeper. He had a bad performance against JDS but when the bell rang he had Santos in a choke that he was not going to escape from. JDS controlled most of the fight but in the end he was saved by the bell. Now we know he wasn't healthy. He also treated Lesner just as bad as Cain did. Yes he gassed after that but Cain tore his rotater cuff. If the ref hadn't stopped that fight would Cain have been able to continue? Carwin is a top tier fighter. The thing that concerns me is that this is his second spinal issue and he is a HW. Even though I do think he could hold the belt I think he may have been better off retiring. Then again, he would probably always regret it. Better to try and fail then to regret not having tried.
Carwin is my favorite fighter and I wish he would have won that fight but to say JDS was saved by the bell is completely ridiculous.
Carwin had his neck, but JDS was in side control. Carwin did not have the control of JDS' body necessary to finish that choke. You simply cannot finish someone with a choke from that position.
@ Mousasi. Dude, JDS was not in side control. He had his back to Carwin and was in a choke turning red. He was saved by the bell in that fight.
If I remember correctly it was an arm triangle but I'd have to rewatch to be sure.
@ IChokePeople. Dude, JDS WAS in side control.
Yeah, you have to rewatch. No, you do not remember correctly.
JDS shot in for a takedown. Carwin grabbed a guillotine, but JDS landed IN SIDE CONTROL like I said. As the bell sounded, Carwin managed to reverse the position and he still had JDS neck. If he couldd have stepped over to mount he could have possibly finished with a guillotine, but he never had an arm triangle. But Carwin never had a choke properly set up so that you can reasonably say that JDS would not have gotten out of it.
Watch, then talk next time.
I believe Cain tore his rotator cuff in training, post championship belt. If I'm wrong, shame on me,
I'm pretty sure it was announced the next day.
A title run left in hmi, I don't think so. Something to prove, of course. He almost beat Lesnar this guy's no joke!
But it wasn't stopped and Carwin was gassed. Lesner won.
Man, Carwin is an awesome top 10 fighter, too bad he has to have so many surgeries, guess that's what happens when you are 36. Could you imagine how good this guy would be if he was in his 20s .
Not surprising a guy with Carwins history would get back problems, I don't believe Carwin has ever won a fight that went out of the first round, that says a lot.
He has only been in two.
That says a lot too.
Id say we have about 4 more carwin fights at the max..... his body just cant keep up anymore.
i think carwin has a good chance of fighting for the title but i think there are too many great wrestlers that are at the top and fighters with great conditioning for a heavywieght... my dads had 3 back surgeries and is ok i think carwin will be just fine
