First Round between Maiquel Falcao and Gerald Harris ended 7 seconds early

The horn sounded, ending what was supposed to be a five-minute round after 4 minutes, 53 seconds. ... Falcao may have been confused because the round ended just a couple seconds after he heard the 10-second warning.

Home viewers may not have noticed because the UFC's TV producers typically remove the clock from the corner of the screen in the last few seconds of the round, but there's no question that the first round ended seven seconds early, and it's doubtful that Harris could have withstood another seven seconds of Falcao's choke without either tapping out or passing out.

It's now incumbent on the UFC and the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission need to undertake a thorough investigation of what went wrong and why. Whether it was foul play on the part of a timekeeper who wanted Harris to win or simply an honest mistake that happened at a terrible time for Falcao, clock errors of that kind simply can't be tolerated.

This is something that should be investigated. Period. Gerald Harris was ready to tap out (or already tapped out, according to some people), as the buzzer sounded approx. 3 seconds after the ten second reminder sticks sound. This was clearly a mistake. And I can understand if it was a mistake of 2 or even 3 seconds, but you can't be wrong by 7 seconds. Someone has to take responsibility for this embarrassment, and eventually pay the price. Watch the video below, and judge by yourself:

I thought he tapped and the ref stopped the fight, even Harris thought that until the ref told him it was not over...

Ya that flash of punches and then the knee was crazy, I thought it was over rite then, having amazing stand up is one thing u can expect from chute box fighters, I wonder if he will eventually become as feared a striker as Shogun, A Silva and Wand

Hope so... wrestlers are taking it over right now getting easy wins. But I wonder if he was pissed about the Time Keeper and got an "I don't give a F*ck" attitude after that? I would like to see him go against Leben, Mcgee, or Munoz.

Great spot! I was thinking during the fight that the bell sounded pretty quickly after the 10 second's left warning, but you tend not to question the timekeeping, but this is a serious case.

People moaning about Falcao's decision win would be praising him if he won by first round submission which he should have!

Harris definitely didn't tap... He was certainly poised and ready to tho, lifting his hand as if to start tapping on two separate occasions. However, a tap is an act of submission and therefore is not something you can judge like whether or not an athlete did or did not lose consciousness. A fighter submits when the pain becomes intolerable or he fears losing consciousness. When this is the case, a fighter will undoubtedly make it clear he wants out. Unless of course he in fact loses consciousness, which was not the case here.

Now, in light of the clock error, I can understand why Falcao was confused and why Harris thought the fight might have been over. With that said tho, for the safety of the fighters, it is still inexcusable to not release a hold when the bell sounds. Especially when the referee is pulling on you and telling you to release it.

joe are you delusional or just high?

Harris did indeed tap, and if the round would of actually finished it would of been a short night for Gerald, cus he would of been going to sleep. as to the dodgy timing it is utterly dissapointing that the ufc cant even get that right, never mind the judging.

I just re-watched the fight again and I would encourage you to do the same. He lifted his hand but never actually made a tapping motion with it. Also, I never said he wouldn't have tapped had the round not been ended early. Sorry if I confused you in some way : )

furthermore wouldnt typing slower just take up more time than simply typing what you have to say?

Nunchaku....I can see the point that you're referring to.....it's around the 11-10 seconds left mark. But what you're seeing is NOT a man tapping, instead it's him going for Falcao's hand/glove to try and pull it away. BIG difference.

Timing error or not, I'm just glad you (Nunchaku) are not a ref. You'd stop the fight on the tap of the gloves at the start of the match thinking someone tapped.

then please explain to me why after the bell rang Harris' corner men had to tell him it wasnt over? hah? Harris knew himself he tapped, he was in between going to sleep and panic tapped.

you do realize if u lose conciousness, u can experience memory loss? Hence why when/if Harris didnt hear the bell but heard the ten second marker, and the fight stop shortly after he may have thought he went out. OR mebe in fact he was pretty much out, who knows, but even then, whats ur defense for why Falcao didnt stop choking if Harris "tapped out"?

Either way ur saying Harris tapped out and Falcao is a f**king nut job that shouldnt be allowed back in the ring for attempted murder(dramatic i know) or a mistake was made and both fighters were confused by what had happened... your pick there but just get your story straight

i wonder if the guy responsible for that early buzzer had a conflict of interest. a loved one or a friend with a ton of money on Harris. or something of that nature that would make them desperately just hit that buzzer somehow. haha

As MMA evolves, expect more fighters to learn elusiveness as a skill. It may not be what you want to see, but if you can learn to appreciate skill then you will embrace it.

Aldo, Edgar, Silva and Machida who adopt this elusiveness to one degree or another. On average it proves to be more successful than the likes of belfort or W.Silva who are happy to stand and trade. Smarter fighters will become extremely good at avoiding strikes and TD's and having patience for a good opening. Watch Aldo's last fight back and the first round he spent alot of time going backwards due to Gamburyan's aggression, maybe even lost the first round but he was fighting smart. Don't knock fighters who do this, it is the natural evolving of MMA skill.
