Speaking on HDNet's popular Inside MMA show, MMA legend Royce Gracie discussed his possible return to the Octagon at UFC: Rio. The legend refused to reveal the name of his opponent, but still didn't deny the option of UFC 60 rematch against Matt Hughes.

Royce Gracie is currently 44 years old, holding a professional MMA record of 14-2-3. Gracie's last fight was back in 2007, against Kazushi Sakuraba (Gracie tested positive for anabolic steroids after the fight).

UFC: Rio will take place on August 27 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event will be headlined by a UFC Middleweight Title fight between the reigning Champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva and Yushin "Thunder" Okami. Light Heavyweight rematch between Forrest Griffin and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will serve as the co-main event.

Hughes is on the downside of his career but the first match wasn't competitive at all.

Do we really think a second fight between these two would be any different?

    Royce don't do it ...

    @Whitey

I agree the outcome would be predictable, not to mention seeing Royce looking old and slow is something i wanna see.I'm shouldn't be surprised 60% said yes but i know what mma folk are like sentiment over common sense.

Yes, Matt Hughes doesnt make sense, they're both older now but there's no reason to expect the results to be any different.

If he really wanted to come back I think it would make more sense to see him fight someone like Rory Macdonald. Not that Royce would ever take that fight but it would be a much more competitive matchup I feel and it can be promoted as a generational thing, Royce takes on one of the new breed fighters that he helped to spawn. Still, Royce not fighting would be better than actually fighting.

Royce is a legend and all, and he started mma and what not but C'mon.....I dont want to see an old man get dominated in the cage. If a current UFC fighter fights him they will be looking to submit a Gracie to get that achievement under their belt and since Royce wont tap one of his limbs are coming off....That or he gets choked right the fudge out.....I guess its what the people in Brasil wanna see, and if they want to see Royce then they deserve to see that, im afraid for his well being though lol

Royce is a legend BUT way overrated. There is not need to see him sell this fight with his smile. Hugues is not even a black belt and would destry him. I rather see the new school and peeps that are competing like Roger Gracie in the Octagon. Royce is just a brand. Period.

if they made it a straight grappling match with 10 min first round I think it would be really interesting, but we know UFC won't do that

It might be a bit different. Matt Hughes was one of the first fights that Royce had where he had any stand up game at all, but he had no takedown defense and his standup wasn't very good at all then. It was however his first attempt and he's had a couple of years since then. I'd actually be interested to see how much (if anything) he's learned to round himself out as a fighter in that time.

Royce deserve honor and stuffs, and he demand that during his interviews... but if ufc want to make something for him better find something outside the cage, just like they did with Chuck Lidell...

Royce is wayyyy past his prime. To be honest i dont want him to fight because he has nothing to offer for any1 in the UFC & would just be taking up a slot on the main card of the biggest UFC event since 100.

When talks of him competing again initially started, the first opponent I thought would be interesting for him would be Demian Maia. Obviously they are both elite BJJ practitioners and both have mediocre striking abilities. However, with Maia now on a two fight winning streak, that wouldn't make very much sense for him at all... That was just one logical thought, but the truth is, Maia would likely run through him, as would any "name" opponent currently competing. Much love and respect to the man that started it all tho.

Royce, for once in your life, be a man and walk away.

You've already disgraced yourself with taking PEDs and then denying it.

Nope, I'm just saying what's on most people's minds.

Royce is 44 with no speed or power and provides just a GJJ background.

Talented fighters who have worked hard deserve that spot.

I think everyone in MMA both loves and respects Royce. I personally would love to see him fight on this card. It that were to happen, the only logical choice is Matt Hughes. Both fighters are done with their careers, at least in a serious manner, but both still have something to bring to the table, that the fans would like to see, in, what would be, a "show" fight.

If Royce would like to fight and Matt is willing (and I wouldn't see why he'd turn it down, particularly given their previous encounter), then I'd love to see it happen. It would be an opportunity and possibly the last, to see two legends of the sport do battle; go Gracie v. Hughes.

i disagree while matt is on the downhill side of his carrer royce although a legend was never a mma fighter merely a bjj fighter hughes will destroy him his standup is better he is his ground game is better he is bigger and stronger, faster better cardio. it was a horrible mismatch the first time will be even worse the second. if they really want royce to fight bring somebody from outside the ufc or have a bjj match

Matt Hughes will obviously win and then where does that leave him? In the middle of Rio de Jeneiro with a bunch of hating Royce Gracie fans. Pray for him if he takes this fight.

Joel Silva couldn't be so cruel to make this rematch. Royce should be honored at UFC Rio, not thrashed.

I have no problem seeing Matt Hughes whip Gracie again.

When I saw Hughes defeat Royce then Renzo--it really brought home the truth that MMA had evolved.

The Gracie's don't possess striking or wrestling and seem to rely exclusively upon BJJ. As Renzo found out, the fight may never get to the ground, and as Royce found out, even if it gets to the ground--there is no easy meat anymore in MMA since every fighter as learned BJJ along with wrestling--so the novelty factor of BJJ is gone.

I think it will be bad for Royce to get is arse whipped in his home country, but he seems oblivious to the likely outcome. If this fight happens, it will only be because of two big names in MMA are fighting, not because it has any significance in the rankings.
