Roy Nelson and Fabricio Werdum to meet at UFC 143

Just days after UFC President Dana White said that the fighters that are in Strikeforce would be staying in Strikeforce, MMAWeekly.com broke the news that Fabricio Werdum would be facing Roy Nelson at UFC 143.

Werdum is coming off a lackluster performance against Alistair Overeem in the quarterfinal round of the Strikeforce heavyweight World Grand Prix in June of this year. During the three round bout, Werdum was very reluctant to engage Overeem, the end result being a fight that contained very little action.

Werdum fought for the UFC in the past, compiling a record of 2-2. Werdum defeated Brandon Veran and Gabriel Gonzaga and was handed losses by Andrei Arlovski and Junior dos Santos.

For his part, Nelson looked like he was close to being shown the door by the UFC after losing to Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir. Had he lost to Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 137, his UFC career could have very well come to a close, but a third round TKO kept him alive with the promotion.

UFC 143 will take place on February 4, 2012 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. The main event will be see Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit meet for the interim UFC Welterweight title.

Pretty good fight..I got Werdum via decision in this one, also, now that Werdum is back in the UFC, I would love to see him fight Mir, both those guys are basically identical fighters it would be pretty interesting to see how that goes

This could go exactly like the Overeem fight. Werdum fearing his power and playing possum. However I think in the few exchanges that happen Werdum's better hand speed and technical boxing will give him the points.

Also, Dana and Co. shouldn't spout off about Nelson's weight as an organisation if they keep giving him HW fights. I think they should try to tempt him by giving him one of the big LHW guys .

I got Nelson by decision. I think I see him keeping it standing and if it does go to the ground I think he has enough skills to at least stand up and besides how is something so round submit-able?

Roy could be the second person to win by smothering with belly. Some big sumo guy done it back in the day but can't recall his name.

Hate it or love it, I see this fight being the same as the Overeem vs Werdum bout. I would like to see roy pull a crucifix on Werdum though lol I got Nelson in a split.

Wizdom.... what a stupid thing too say. he has KO'd shaub, Cro cop, and struve, been top of the IFL, and won the ultimate fighter season 10, and went the distance with the ufc champ Dos Antos who destroys everyone, yet he doesnt deserve too be in the ufc??? wrong buddy

    You are right....

If Roy knocks out Werdum that will be great for him....

If Werdum gets knocked out, he will be going back to strikeforce quickly...

Must win for Werdum......since he is all that great and 1of 2 guys to beat Fedor

This is a great fight. I think Roy has an edge on his feet and Werdum is going to need to seriously improve his takedowns to get this one. Would be fun to see them on the ground though.

Roy is tough as nails! All depends on if he takes his strength and conditioning training seriously. The guy still needs to drop 20-30lbs and he needs to add some muscle. A fast/fit Big Country would be very dangerous in the HW division. Where would he be if he had better cardio when he fought Jr. ?

I think he will edge out Werdum if he can take him down... and keep him there.

Some just pick their fights carefully. Some just attack everyone to no benefit to themselves.

I think Roys going to get a KO. Thats about as honest as I can be and I didnt have to piss everyone off in the process.

I am picturing Werdum lying on his back, and motioning Nelson to jump into his guard.

Then Roy does a belly flop and S-P-L-A-T.

    TKO by belly flop.
