ESPN.com reports that "Suga" Rashad Evans will return to action against Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis in the main event of UFC on FOX 2 on January 28th at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

The winner is expected to earn a shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight title, which will be on the line at UFC 140, as the reigning Champion Jon Jones faces Lyoto Machida in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

UFC on FOX 2 will be co-headlined by the 185lbs collision between Chael Sonnen and Mark Munoz. Just the like the main event of the night, Sonnen vs. Munoz is a #1 Contender bout, for the right to face Anderson Silva sometime during 2012.

Evans and Davis were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 133, but the fight was cancelled after "Mr. Wonderful" was forced to pull out of the card due to a knee injury. Rashad Evans fought Tito Ortiz instead, beating the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion via TKO in Round 2.

Rashad Evans is currently 16-1-1 in his MMA career, losing only to Lyoto Machida (via KO), back at UFC 98. Since then, Evans is on an impressive three-fight winning streak, with victories over the top-ranked 205'ers Thiago Silva, Rampage Jackson, and as mentioned above - Tito Ortiz. As for Davis, the young wrestling prodigy is currently undefeated in his MMA campaign, holding a professional record of 9-0 with 2 KO/TKO's and 3 Submissions. In his most recent bout, Davis defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira via Unanimous Decision.

pretty safe fight for Rashad, good fight to stay active, and to still maintain his number 1 contender status.

    "Pretty safe?"

Despite Rashad's level of experience, Phil Davis is the highest level wrestler he has ever faced...and it's really not even close. Phil Davis is a 4-time NCAA finalist at 197 pounds. Rashad was a moderately successful Division I wrestler 174 pounds. The best wrestler he has ever faced was probably Tito Ortiz. Davis being bigger and probably stronger than Evans definitely has a good chance to put Evans on his back in this fight.

On the ground, Rashad is supposedly a blackbelt in BJJ, but he has yet to submit anyone in the UFC, while Davis has shown impressive submission skills in several of his fights.

Standing, Rashad will probably have a significant advantage - he is probably faster and definitely more technical, but Davis has shown rapid improvement in every aspect of MMA and will have the reach advantage.

This is a very tough fight for Rashad, and there are less than a handful of guys on the planet who are a less "safe" fight for him. He is deservedly the favorite, but could easily lose.

While I agree with most of what you are saying I am pretty tired of people talking so much about what an MMA fighter did in a different sport years ago, wrestling gives you a good base for MMA but you still have to learn MMA wrestling (GSP is case and point).

Rashad is without a doubt one of the best MMA wrestlers in the world and so is Davis, will be a great fight but I think its hard to say Davis will have a major advantage in mma wrestling.

Probably just a matter of time unless Silva calls out Sonnen which is unlikely to happen.

Rashad can wrestle with Davis, but his standup his light years away, I think IMO Phil will taste his first defeat.

Are you sure Rashad can wrestle with Davis?

Phil Davis: 116-17 at PSU, 4 time All-American, 1 time National Champion at 197 pounds

Rashad Evans: 48-34 at MSU at 174 pounds

Yes, Rashad's college career was a long time ago, but Davis' credentials are clearly on another level, and he is also the bigger man.

You never no how fast someones skills can develope when they are so young...just look at Diaz when he fought Lawler, he became so good at boxing so fast and now Davis finally got time off to actually learn ( i no he was injured but hes been fine for a while now), before he was just fighting after fighting not being able to work on his skills, so we might actual see a more well rounded and dangerous Davis

It is about how your wrestling translates to MMA. If that were the case Matt Lindland would have never lost.

You're right on that one. If Davis can turn this fight in a wrestling match with Evans he could win but Evans has a lot of experience in MMA so he'll try not to commit any mistakes.

We'll get to see if Davis is ready for top calibre opponents. Evans defo has a striking advantage as Davis has looked very green but his wrestling is superb. Given Evans likes to wrestle too it could play into Davis favour. but if Evans plays it smart he should win.

I think this could be a banana skin for Evans. "Mr Wonderful" will be the underdog but has nothing to lose. His skills and quickness could score an upset here.

Jones and Evans aren't going to fight. It was just a feeling I had, way back when their 1st fight was announced, and every delay or postponement has convinced me more.

Rashad vs Phil will be a really good fight and will tell us a lot about both Rashad and Phil. But if this fight crowns the number 1 contender what happened to Hendos guaranteed title shot?

That's what I was just asking myself. Maybe he'll have a rematch with Shogun that would be nice too but it's maybe not what Hendo wants.

Shad definitely has the better striking

This might be going out on a limb but I think Davis is a better wrestler

But Rashad's wrestling is worked more seamlessly into his all around game

I think Rashad takes it, but no counting davis out cuz he's a ****ing animal I mean look at his ****ing shoulders

Could become a standup fight as is the case often when fighters wrestling cancels each other out

I like this fight for a lot of reasons but most importantly because ITS FREE!
