Rashad Evan says he'll wait for Shogun

After Dana White announced the dissapointing news that Shogun Rua will be sidelined until March 2011 Number One Contender Rashad Evans gave his thoughts on the situation.

"I kind of figured he would be out for awhile after his last fight hearing how he went into the fight beforehand. At this point, unless they come up with an interim title, then I'll wait," Evans said. "Having a chance to fight for a title is a once-in-a-lifetime chance, and I consider myself to be very lucky that I got two chances."

Evans earned another shot at the belt after taking out top LHWs Thiago Silva and Rampage Jackson. Evans first earned the title after beating Forrest Griffin but his run was cut short as he next faced then undefeated Lyoto Machida. Rashad tried playing safe but eventually The Dragon was too much and brutally Knocked Out Evans in the second round. Now Rashad has another chance but waiting for Rua means he now will be sidelined for approximately 10 months.

I like rashad, but I wanna see him fight for the interim-title; that way, I'd he wins it confirms he's ready for the real thing. Two decisions are good, but I wanna see him finish. Who's the other contender he should fight?...

He WON those fights - a win is a win and he beat two contenders. I would like to see finishes but who deserves the shot more than Evans at this point?

it might be a rematch of lyoto...The way i figure it everyone knows shogun really won both fights but the records say it's one and one....let shogun kick his ass three times and the better fight record on paper....Least machida fights to finish, not to win by points

There are more interesting matchups to be seen before we start having a bunch of rematches at this point.

    Rashad is just pussying out.

What kind of attitude is that? shit, CHRIS LEBEN would fight again NEXT WEEK!!!

Shogun may not be the same fighter when he comes back from ANOTHER surgery. 205 is way too stacked to sit out for 9 more months.

    We don't have time for a mini-retirement.

Rashad better come to grips with the reality that 205 is a total shark tank and he'd better put up or shut up because in 9 months there could be a more legit #1 contender. Lyoto, Franklin, Jon Jones, Forrest, Silva(s), Bader ... who knows!?

UFC will hve to make a interm belt seeing that Shogun is out till March, I bet if Randy wins they will get Randy n Evans to fight for the interm title

Generally speaking, The interim belt is between the last champ vs the number 1 contender. I wouldn't mind seeing a Evans vs Machida rematch. But if Machida wins then it will be 3 straight fights for the LH belt between Machida and Shogun.

No clue we need to see a couple top LHW fights to find that out. For kicks and giggles i say they have Machida fight Griffin and winner gets interim title shot. cuz Machida KO'd Rashad and Griffin was picking Rashad apart until he got TKO'd

I dont know if they will come up with the interim title because its only 10 months, which is a long time but I dunno if its quite long enough or not.... I mean, they have a stacked LHW division, so its not like they wont have options for other great matches. As far as if they did make the interim title, it would likely just end up setting up a rematch for Machida with Shogun. Machida would probably be the likely contender to match Rashad for the interim title and while I am a big Evans fan, Machida is the only man to beat him and it didn't look like a fluke by any means.

March of 2011 is much too long for evans to be waiting around. It's bad enough shogun will have to wait that long, no sense having evans suffer as well.

In a case like this, an interm belt is the only way to go. as dana always says, he puts out fights the fans want to see. I don't think there is one fan of MMA who would want evans sitting around that long.

i agree but i dont think there is anyone right now who is even close to a title shot. I really hope people dont say jon jones because a win over Vera does not put you in title contention.

He should have tried some grappling....all he did was pin him against the fence doesn't count as anything more than a pitiful win in any of the sports

Rashad should fight someone else for the Interim Belt ,When the Champ goes down ,the contender should not have to wait for the champ to heal. Look what happened with Brock and Shane ....they should do the same maybe Rashad and Lyoto or Hammill and Rashad or Who ever is at the Top Right Now Bitches

If he does do an Interim it would HAVE to be Lyoto. Nobody else is even close. Lyoto has lost one fight only and so has Rashad, but Lyoto has fought way better guy through his career.

Yea, before you say something like "Lyoto has fought way better guys" you might wanna try something like Fight-Finder. I mean I understand that it was just an easy statement to make, as you needed something to try to degrade Evans but you failed.

    Evans Machida

    -------- ------------

    Quinton Jackson Mauricio Rua

    Thiago Silva Mauricio Rua

Lyoto Machida (his only loss) Rashad Evans

    Forrest Griffin Thiago Silva

    Chuck Liddell Tito Ortiz

    Michael Bisping Rameau Sokoudjou

    Tito Ortiz Kazuhiro Nakamura

    Sean Salmon David Heath

    Jason Lambert Sam Hoger

    Stephan Bonnar

    Sam Hoger

Brad Imes (Who he fought at heavyweight)

Hopefully this will save you some time. So where are these WAY better guys? As you can see Evans has more fights, with opponents that are at least as good, if not better, than Machida. Much respect to Machida, as he is the only man to defeat Rashad, my point was not to take away from Lyoto. Rashad has just one loss, as does Machida, however it can be argued that Machida lost twice to Rua.

you also forgot to mention that Machida has fought:

    -Rich Franklin

-B.J. Penn (in heavy weight, lol)

-Stephan Bonnar (I know you listed it for Rashad, but wasn't sure if that was also listed for Machida)

the thing about the LHW division is that is soooo stacked that any of the top fighters can be champ because they can all beat each other on any given night. The rumors i think are rampage will either fight machida or lil nog, and forrest might fight franklin, and the winners will fight for next top contender, but i wouldnt count out jones or even hamil, idk its jus a big coin toss with that.

What a pussy!! That said, yes, we do need an interim title. Machia is probably out of the picture, so is Rampage and Thiago Silva.... Bring in Anderson Silva imo!!

I can understand that Rashad Evans is hesitant to fight. Right now he is the number 1 contender, if he loses he loses that spot, probably for a long time. So right now there is no way but down until he fights Shogun. A interim title might be a solution depending on how badly Dana wants to see a title fight. As to who would be good to fight Rashad for the interim, I don't know. Perhaps Lyoto vs Rampage should determine who gets to fight him, maybe they can finally let Anderson Silva move up if he defeats Sonnen, I think Rashad vs Silva could be a good match up. I don't think Couture should get a shot, it would show a lack of progress in the LW division, whereas that division has a lot of competition and nobody is really safe. Jon Jones would also be a possibility, but I don't think that match up would appeal to a large audience. They might try to hype Jones, but right now he isn't a household name yet. He will probably have to fight some more fights against the big dogs before they let him go for a title.

My personal favorite would be Rashad vs Silva, I think that would be a good match up and I would also like to see how Silva does against Shogun. It may keep MMA interesting for Silva

how does he become the top contender by fighting twice after losing the belt. shogun was the top contender then next was jon jones, vera said it himself when he asked for the number 3 205er. i just think its too soon to give rashad a shot maybe 1 more win at least. and plus jon jones destroyed every opponent he fought. the boy deserves a shot.

I think they will have an interim belt for sure, and Rashad has already one spot on that fight. As for the other spot, that I dont know. I would like to see Machida fight Rampage, maybe the winner of that fight would get a rematch against Rashad for the Interim belt...?

Other than that, we can always to see if Anderson destroys his midleweight opposition ( Sonnen then Belfort) and moves up to 205 for a tittle shot, wouldnt that be fantastic? ^^
