Quick Quote: Frank Mir prepares to stand with Mirko Cro Cop
Posted on August 24, 2010, 06:39 AM by Anton Gurevich"I don't know if he's ever really lost his step. I just think the fighters now in the UFC are just a little bit more aggressive than the fighters in PRIDE. Studying tape on him, I noticed that guys that back away from him and give him that respect, it seems like they get unleashed on a little harder than the guys that come forward... I think Cro Cop has a good sprawl, he has a good double underhooks. I think if I were to try to just drop and shoot on him, he would stop my shot. I think standing up with him is actually the route to go at first and then eventually when you work in the clinch, going to the ground is obviously a lot easier to do with him than Nogueira." - MMAFighting.com
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir says the Croatian legend Mirko Filipovic is still a game opponent, declaring that he will look to exchange blows and get into the clinch with the Pride veteran. Mirko Cro Cop is currently on a two-fight winning streak in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, with victories over Anthony Perosh (UFC 110) and Pat "HD" Barry (UFC 115). UFC 119 will take place on September 25th at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana.

cro cop !
I hope Cro Cop Ko's Mir, it would be awesome to see Cro Cop back in the top 5 HW's in the world
I would love that too. I actually think Franks gameplan is not very good. If anything pin him against the cage like Randy. Striking with Crocop is not the best Idea just like striking with Kongo. He got the better of Kongo but I don't see it always going that way for him. Maybe I am wrong and he is a great striker now but I think it's risky especially when you are in real need of a win.
His plan sounds good to me. What he said was accurate. I would hate to see Frank lose because he wanted to strike again though.
@falcon
i think you are wrong, Mir's striking against Nog and Kongo looked pretty good technically can't think of too many heavy weights in the UFC that would do the same them in the striking department plus he has gotten stronger too. The Crop Cop from pride has never shown up in the UFC and never will on a consistent basis. Anything can happen but i see Mir TKO Cro Cop don't forget what Kongo did to him I don't understand what makes people think Mir won't do the same
Oh I definetly see what you are saying and i actually see him winning as well. I think it's a smart gameplan in general but I don't think he should rest on his striking just yet. He just seems a bit too confident in his striking and I am not convinced at least yet that he can rely on it. He may prove me wrong and in that case I retract what I have said.
People forget how many times Cro Cop was kneed in the groin in the Kongo fight.
Coin toss... Cro cop is great, seems like such a nice guy, and very smart. You have to be quick witted to be funny, and his jokes are funny even in very broken English. Francis is a douche but I wouldn't mind seeing him move up. Get to watch him be manhandled like a toddler despite the pointless muscle that he packs on in vain.
Cmon mir isnt that bad. Hes really technically skilled. He can run his mouth a little but he has been beat down and his pride has been broken both by Lesnar and Carwin. I for one hope he does well from now on.....but i hope Cro Cop does well too.....i guess ill be content with whoever wins
He's one of the best HW's in the world, he's skilled of course. He's the best HW JJ fighter when it comes to fighting off the back.
But, he's a douche. Let's paraphrase one of his gems "I hate MMA fighters who don't say what they mean, they just talk. I always mean what I say, and I hope Lesnar breaks his neck and dies in the octagon"
*the next day*
"Oh, yeah, I didn't mean what I said there"
So bad for the sport. People who want to keep MMA unsanctioned will stand at these meetings and point to Frank's words as evidence that MMA should be banned. Maybe someone brought it up in rebuttal to the UFC's arguments that they should be sanctioned in NYC?
He needs to shut his mouth, and stop checking the video screens during every fight to see if his hair is straight. IMO.
He has the best hair in MMA.
Mir is in a must win situation. He'll come through. He can't afford to drop this fight. If he did he may never get another title shot. I really like Mir and I think he'll win the belt again in the next year or two.
"I think he'll win the belt again"
![@@]!
I don't see how Cro Cop is going to win the fight. He has zero chances against Mir. But I really hope to see Cro Cop droping Mir with one left high kick to Mir's head. Would that be so awesome???!!!!!!
I wouldn't say he has no chance, but Frank Mir sure as hell is no Pat Barry, he's not gonna get stupid in there.
Bout time Mir is showing an opponent some respect.
Cro Cop by kicking Mir in half.
OK guys, calm down!
Cro Cop is a nice guy, he showed a lot of personality in his last appearance. He's a smart guy, no denying that and he has a killer head kick. That said, he's not a 'well rounded fighter' and we need to keep that in mind when we're discussing what may or may not go down when he faces Frank Mir.
Cro Cop said it himself: "wrestling is the best background when you go into MMA; you can learn the few basic punches and kicks in a few months, but you can't learn wrestling in a few months or years". When he said that my respect for him grew even higher. He's aware of his weaknesses and that he - being from Croatia - has *no chance* to get his wrestling at the UFC level. Too bad.
He's been learning BJJ lately which is also his weakest part of the game, but he's nowhere near Frank Mir's level. Frank Mir is a solid black belt in BJJ and he can submit Cro Cop way easier than Nogueira. And he knows that, as well does Cro Cop.
Had Cro Cop just begun his MMA career, he'd be a force to reckon with. But I'm afraid he's too old to learn and train all the slick tricks young fighters bring to the table.
I'm not betting on Cro Cop, but I'm looking forward for this bout. I'm sure it will be amazing!
If you listened closely to his interviews before the barry fight, he said he's been learning BJJ for the last 10 years and that his BJJ and wrestling are very under rated. He had Werdum in his camp during the Pride days to help brush up his BJJ game and he's been bringing wrestlers in to his camp as well.
Yeah well he's still a purple belt or something. We'll see soon how good his BJJ and wrestling really are, Frank Mir will be his toughest test to date in UFC no doubt about it.
@ KFB
...well, said.
Mir wants to stand with Cro cop ok.....
"Right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery."
Usually its Mirs Strategy that lets him down but I think hes got this one spot on. I would rate Mirs boxing a fraction better than CroCops. Also Its nearly impossible to take CroCop down and hes been hesitant about throwing Headkicks of late.
damn u! i was gonna say somethin about that. lol o well i hope we see a cro cop cemetary kick that hits mir in the head. then he will still be a legit threat to the heavey wieght division.
@griffin
I used to love that saying but he's not throwing those legs.
Did you guys not see the Pat Barry fight? He was throwing those legs, realy let them go, even threw in an axe kick.
i'm not sure who to go for in this fight, fan of both. All i can say is that this will be good entertainment.
yea its too bad that aside from a few in the barry fight he seems really hesitant to throw the kicks these days. He could have easily finished perosh with a nice head kick
I think he doesn't throw kicks as often because of the threat of takedowns.
Yea I think you guys are right. I think I just want to see the kicks because of all the Pride I used to watch. His kicks were so dangerous that it would be hard to shake off even one while attempting a takedown.
I like both fighters.. This fight is better than the Nog rematch. I hope they step up to being their best fighting days again.. I'm not calling this fight for either of them. I'll just sit back and enjoy the show.. One thing i'd like to see is Rampage clipping Machidas jaw though. Though I don't think it's gonna happen
I'm not sure how many others are affected by that as much as Cro Cop - it does seem that he is changing his ways inside and outside the cage after every fight in the UFC.
cro cop by brutal KO
I usually don't like agreeing with Mir, but he is pretty spot on with this one.
Cro Cop does that one step at a time thing, a guess most people call it stalking. But it only works when his opponent is doing the same. If he get's an opponent that is aggressive and moving around alot, Cro Cop's trademark "stalk" doesn't work. And you don't really see him moving a whole lot.
