Quotes Round-Up: Vladimir Matyushenko, James Toney, Michael Bisping and Sarah Kaufman
Posted on July 22, 2010, 10:05 AM by Anton GurevichUFC on Versus: 2 main event combatant Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko declared that he will be looking to stop Jon Jones' climb to the top on August 1st. Matyushenko will face a tough test in Jones, who has the longest reach in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, not speaking about the age difference between the two. The Janitor is on a winning streak of his own, getting past Jason Lambert, Igor Pokrajac and Elliot Marshall:
"Young, athletic, fairly dangerous, long reach, and eager to get to the top. So my job is to stop it. Actually I like his style and the way he fights. My plan is to surprise him with my striking. I don't mind going on the ground or standing up. I just have to keep pressure (on him) and I can't stand in front of him like his other opponents did and just wait until he kicks you or punches you or elbows or knees. I have to constantly move and start the fight on my own terms. It's going to be a tough fight. but fighting's supposed to be tough. So why not?" - TSN.ca
IBA Heavyweight Champion James "Lights Out" Toney continued to market his bout against Randy Couture at UFC 118 stating that he will send "The Natural" to the Hospital. Toney dismissed Anderson Silva's position as the best striker in MMA, declaring that he is the one who has the best hands insite the Octagon:
"Like you just said, you talk about Anderson Silva as the best striker in the division, I'm best the striker in the MMA period. I'm gonna show everybody how to punch for real. I've been in there with the best fighters in the world period. I ain't talking about boxing or talking about MMA. Boxing is all that matters. Whatever it comes down to, when Randy Couture sees me ready to shoot that right hand up, I'm telling you he's not even gonna see it coming, it's gonna be over and he's gonna be on his way to the hospital." - SportsRadioInterviews
Elsewhere, The Count of Wolfslair Michael Bisping revealed that he is already spending his UFC 120 Fight of the Night bonus. UFC will return to the United Kingdom for the first time this year, with the Middleweight showdown between Michael Bisping and Yoshihiro Akiyama as the headliner. "The Outlaw" Dan Hardy will square off against Carlos Condit, as the heavy-hitting Cheick Kongo will also participate in the event. Tickets for UFC 120 will go on sale this Friday from 10 AM E.T:
“The British fans have always given me unbelievable support and I’ve never lost at home, so I am looking to help make this another special night for British MMA. Akiyama is a very dangerous guy. He strikes very well, he has power, and he will keep coming at you. He is very strong with his judo takedowns, and I will have to train seriously hard to come up for an answer for those. But I think that if I set a fast, hard pace in the first round, that by the third I will have taken over and will be in a position to finish him. Akiyama will obviously be looking to do the same thing – that is the way he always fights – and I am already spending my ‘Fight of the Night’ bonus in my head.“ - Echo
Finally, this week's ShoMMA 9 co-headliner Sarah Kaufman sent a clear message to the Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. The 11-0 Strikeforce Womens Bantamweight Champion made no secret about the frustration of fighting at the ShoMMA event (Challengers), promising to make a statement against Roxanne Modafferi:
I am currently the Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight Champion…yet I fought for the title on a Challengers Card. Now, I am set to defend said title against Roxanne Modafferi in just a few days – again – on a Challengers Card. I know that it’s going to be a fun and challenging fight…and I always welcome that. Roxanne has been around the sport for a long time and will come game to fight; however, I need to take this fight and make a statement. That statement will be: I deserve to be on a main Strikeforce Card because I am a talented, exciting FEMALE fighter at 135lbs! I will NOT eat a ridiculous amount of cookies to make 145lbs JUST for the opportunity to be on a main card and growing man parts… well that would just be ridiculous - PrettyToughFighter.com
We would like to remind you that the picks for Strikeforce Challengers 9, UFC on Versus 2 and UFC 117: Silva vs Sonnen are all currently open. The winner of UFC 117 picks will get a free Walkout T-Shirt of Anderson Silva or Chael Sonnen. Why is Kongo still in the UFC?
The guy has the best psyche in MMA and sucks.
He did lose twice in a row against Velasquez and Mir...
Came back to destroy Buentello in his last fight though, so he still deserves to fight in the UFC.
Also in the fight with Velasquez, he almost knocked him out and that was the 1st time Velasquez had to go to a decision, although all the other victims suffered KO/TKO loses.
So the guy clearly doesn't suck, but he has become a gatekeeper lately i'll agree; pretty much the same as Gonzaga.
yes he sucks...Buentello? lol
lol well a win's a win, plus Cro Cop isnt a picnic.
you mean physique?
yea, Im glad I got my helpers like you around here.
Oh ok, lol I was wondering what you meant by that.... I am thinking, what the hell does Hype know about Kongo's psyche, did I miss a special on Spike or something?
Wow Sarah that's hilarious! Cookies are delicious!
Toney dont make sense saying when couture sees it coming he wont see it. maybe toney has had his lights out too much himself.
