Penn vs Hughes 3 in the works for UFC 123?

The rubber match UFC fans have been waiting for since UFC 63 may happen on November 20th at UFC 123. The other day Former Welterweight champion Matt Hughes posted a new blog which included the following quote

"Finally, Dana called me yesterday and we had an interesting conversation about the November 20th UFC in Detroit. More news about that down the road.”

Now this would mean nothing if not for the fact that Former Lightweight and Welterweight champ BJ Penn posted a video not to long ago stating that he will be fighting again in November. With many LW fighters already set to fight or are being rumored to fight such as Guida, Gomi, Lauzon, Satiropoulos, Maynard, and Tyson Griffin it would make perfect sense for BJ to make another move up to 170 and try to defeat the Hall of Famer for a second time.

Both fighters currently hold a victory over the other. BJ Penn and Matt Hughes first stood toe to toe at UFC 46 where a smaller BJ shocked the world when he defeated a man who seemed unstoppable and took his belt in just one round. The second bout took place at UFC 63 and happened by complete chance. Matts original opponent was set to be GSP but an injury forced him off the card and BJ was more than happy to take his place. The fight began and BJ seemed to be the much quicker fighter. For two rounds BJ would go on to punish Hughes' face with his crisp boxing. Then as the third round began Penn looked absolutley gased which allowed Matt to take him down, get him in a crucifex and pound his face until the ref stopped the fight.

Now 4 years later both men may meet again at a card that has been getting better and better with fights such as Machida vs Rampage, Lauzon vs Sotiropoulos, and the return of Karo Parisyan.... As for Matt Hughes saying he will not fight again in 2010 a Rubber match between the man that took his title so many years ago is just too tempting to pass up.

This is a great match up, way better than Kenflo vs Penn 2, I hope Penn wins and gets back on track but if he defeats Hughes is he going to stay at 170 then? I hope so there r alot of match ups for him in that division

I cant stand Hughes hate him more than any other fighter in the UFC but I'll give it to him I thought he was done ever since the Alves fight. He didn't impress me against Serra I actually thought he lost then he went out and destroyed Gracie which I was quick to say Gracie isn't good anymore. But after his last fight I'll give him credit. I don't care if other Hughes haters out there think he just got lucky against Big dog the guy can still bring it. Penn is my favorite fighter of all time but looks really uninspired of late but I would hope Hughes would get B.J motivated. So anything can happen in this fight so I hope alot of people won't say Penn will kill Hughes or Hughes will kill Penn because I think this is the perfect fight for both men at the right time in there careers. Great time for these two to have a 3rd fight so lets make it happen UFC

Two of my favorite fighters. Matt needs to give this win to BJ. I feel bad for him going from #1 to losing 2 straight fights.

tbh I think matt hughes would have a better chance of winning this fight.......I think bj has been slow in his last 2 fights and he seem distracted like not mentally their in his last few fights, props to hughes

This is going to be interesting but I still give the Striking and Grappling advantage to Penn but I give the Strength/Clinch advantage to Hughes. Hughes could have a smart fight like Couture vs Vera

just a rumor as of right now. i'm not getting too excited. There is no real evidence to suggest the match-up.

id love hughes to win this. definetly my favorite fighter and the fact no one likes him and hates me for liking him makes it so much sweeter lol. he still cant get respect after what hes done in the ufc and who hes beaten. i just find it odd. ppl think hes ****y, but hes awfuly quiet and shows alot of respect after all his wins. ****yness and confidence are two different things.

this is all just speculation they also said gomi might fight on the card and i think gomi vs penn 2 would not only be a way better fight it is also more likely to happen

I would probably rather see Hughes and Penn 3 for the simple fact that Hughes don't have much time left in his career. Any 2 fighters that have fought twice and are 1-1 against each other should have a rubber match IMO. So put this one together Dana. I think Penn will run right through him, but I will be rooting for Hughes. I don't really like either of them, but I dislike Penn more because he b*tches and whines every time he losses, and always has an excuse for everything
