Paul Daley issues an apology for the UFC 113 disgrace

Former (?) UFC Welterweight contender Paul "Semtex" Daley issued an official apology for the "cheap shot" on Josh Koscheck at UFC 113. After being dominated by Koscheck's superior Wrestling skills, frustrated Daley decided to assault his opponent with punches after the end of the final third round. UFC President Dana White has immediately declared that "Semtex" will not fight at the promotion ever again, even if at some point he would be considered as the Best fighter in the World.

Speaking via Telegraph.co.uk, Paul Daley looked back at the embarassing incident:

"I’ve had a long flight home to consider my actions and regret the mistake I made on Saturday. I would like to apologise to the UFC and the Athletic Commission for what I’ve done as well as all the fans and sponsors that support me."

"I would also like to offer my sincerest apologies to Josh Koscheck who did not deserve the cheap shot I threw.  He did what he needed to do in order to win the fight and get the job done, and I foolishly reacted to the situation. There is no excuse for my actions and I know what I did was very unprofessional.  I was immensely frustrated by a collection of things that took place throughout the fight as well as leading up to it, but I’m certainly not trying to condone or excuse my actions."

"Josh implemented his game plan perfectly taking me down and staying on top of me for the majority of the fight.  I was also frustrated about him claiming (and acting like) I knee’d him in the head on the ground when it was clear for all to see in the video replay that I didn’t connect at all with the knee I threw. Then finally, the verbal abuse Josh hit me with in the final 30 seconds of the fight simply pushed me over the edge and my frustrations came out as I knew I’d lost the fight, was unhappy with my own performance and had then been ridiculed by my opponent to top things off."

"This is certainly no excuse for my actions; I fully deserve to be punished for what I did and hope that everyone I have disappointed can forgive my rash decision.  I feel very disappointed in myself for losing my cool and hope that I am able to address my temperament and bounce back from this low point in my career."

"I feel ashamed and embarrassed by what I did and hope that together my team and I can get through this issue. It will be a long road back from where I am now to earning the trust and respect of the UFC and the MMA fans that have supported me for so long, I know I’ve let you all down but I’m determined to make it up to you all."

The news about Paul Daley's release from the UFC contract could alert the rival Strikeforce promotion, who are desperately looking for a worthy Welterweight challenger, who could compete against Nick Diaz. Twenty-seven years old Paul Daley is currently 23-9 in his MMA career, with 18 knockouts to his record. The Unanimous Decision loss against Josh Koscheck was the first time ever "Semtex" went to distance.

    Excuse...

But, this is not an excuse!

He was obviously acting, whether it grazed his scalp or not. Though Koscheck wanted to cheat, he could have taken the DQ win. He didn't need the point deduction, and he didn't need the DQ. Paul should be thanking him for giving him a chance to breath and re-think, not that it did him much good.

Semtex has gone the distance plenty of times, double check his record, he's gone the distance for a total of 4 times, 2 if you don't count draws.

Do you think you disagreed with something I said? What was wrong? Daley was getting his ass kicked, he was being dominated, he was struggling with a world-class wrestler and that drains you. The break did him good. It doesn't matter if he's Sean Shirk or Clay Guida when it comes to cardio.

Daley threw the illegal knee. And the break helped him, it didn't hurt him.

Those were his reasons and there are reasons behind every action, if they were excuses he would not be admitting guilt.

And... Koschecks eyes were both mangled in the post-fight. Not from punches. If someone wants to cry about the non-event, the illegal knee that the dirty fighter shouldn't have thrown in the first place... Why not pretend to have some integrity and acknowledge that eye-gouging, and attacking someone after the fight, are both much much worse.

Subtract the drama, and Koscheck dominated him. The dirty fighter's attempted illegal knee is moot. He could have landed it clean, knocked Koscheck loopy for 5 minutes, and he still would have lost and lost bad.

It's the thought that counts. Cheater was only able to have an excuse because he missed. Both are shown to be cheap but Daley is as cheap as they come.

You guys are really naive if you think that guy is sincerely apologizing. I'm sure he's sorry he lost his job and a lot of people's respect, but I don't believe for a second that he really feels bad about what he did.

And the illegal knee? Yes, Kos played it up. Pro athletes do it all the time to draw attention to the fact someone isn't playing by the rules. The fact is that Daley got dominated and that pissed him off, so he resulted to using illegal strikes and eye gouging. Then after the fight is clearly over and his opponent is walking away, he tops it off by hitting him with a sucker-punch.

And you're defending this guy because now "he's sorry"??

True... Disappointing that strikers like Paul can't seem to understand that MMA encompasses all aspects of fighting. It's not boxing. He should have spent less time talking about how amazing he is, and more time working on his take down defense.

what you dont understand is that fighters like josh who wrestle and cant do nothing else to there opponents is just boring and and shit to watch on there behalf not the strikers fault for avoiding all damage done on the ground. once again the same perthetic comment made on this site... mma is not boxing and ill reply just like i didnt o the hardy gsp fight. this is MMA not wrestling!! wrestlers and the cause of every boring fight nowadays face it..

I imagine wrestlers find it interesting. Perhaps guys like you and I that sometimes find it boring need to learn more about the sport. Also, remember when all of the "MMA" artists of the time couldn't solve the riddle of Royce Gracie? Modern MMA artists who are striking-dominant need to learn to defend the wrestling the same way the last generation had to learn to defend BJJ.

Anyways, one thing I can't understand. Why don't wrestlers just ground and pound more? I'm not against controlling the fight just as long as you work.

If you have your opponent down for a short period of time, then I can understand, but the whole round? Oh come on man =(

What about the guys that run around the ring throwing a jab every 30 seconds...(Frankie Edgar vs Penn) ...If the stand up style guys dont want to lose to wrestlers... How about they try learning how to stop it instead of complaining about it cuz they know it's part of the sport

That's a big part of the reason that Chuck has knocked so many people out. If he wasn't such a great wrestler, if he didn't have that skill, he would be taken down and beaten on the ground. His wrestling facilitates his striking.

The guy was on a meteoric rise like we don't see very often. He was going to be the new Brit representative. The sky was the limit for him.

All of his friends and family watching, got to see him flush his career down the toilet for no reason. Waste it out of ego and self pity.

I clearly pointed out "with all this going on with Daley" So by definition didnt I point out a person and situation? How the hell is that generalizing? It's a shit website, that on-one in mma respects and it's because of opinions like yours and the other kids on here. I used to try and make relevant and interesting and well thought out posts to raise the status a little bit, but I'm sick of dealing with the people on here, this site is never going anywhere and the news is just taken from better sites."

Take the apology with a grain of salt. If Daley punched him, he meant to do it, and would probably do it again if the opportunity presented itself. What Daley did didn't really surprise me one bit. You could almost see it coming a mile away with this guy. It's a pure sign of immaturity, poor sportsmanship, and just stupidity. He is getting exactly what he deserves and the UFC did the right thing. Absolutely inexcusable behavior and he will have the rest of his career to think about it. Cheers to Dana White on this one for stepping in immediately and making a huge example out of this clown.

At the end of it all it's all of us "the fans" that lose out on some awesome match ups because off an over reaction in the heat of the moment. It was foolish and deserves a heavy punishment yes, a lengthy ban and/or a big fine but to cut him isn't necassary imo, if the said punch had hurt Kos or KO'd him then yes definately, no questions. I bet Kos is well pleased that this has taken the heat off of him and his 2nd oscar winning performance, a good fighter yes but i've lost any respect i had for him as a fighter...........

I accept what Daley says. Is he the perfect gentleman? No, but then aside from GSP who is? Certainly not Dana or Koscheck. Probably not most of you and MOST certainly not me. I don't think an asshold makes an apology like that, pointing out so many things he did wrong, if he didn't mean it. In his apology he gives some explanation WHY he did some of these things but he doesn't invalidate the apology.

Well done Paul (BTW - I'm not a fan of his)

As much as I dislike Daley, I have to admit i feel bad for him now.........ok I really don't lol. He was a very interesting fighter to watch in the UFC, but after that Strikeforce incident he had to get cut. We all know that the UFC has to live up to the standard of being the best, and when the image of the UFC gets compromised Dana is going to fire someone.

I have to say I loved the drama between Daley and Kos. We all know Kos is a douche, but in trying to prove that Daley became an even bigger douche. THEN, during the fight Kos dominated him then STILL trashed talked while mounted on Daley which caused Daley to break and deliver a cheap shot. ...gotta love that shit

at the ed of the day, all of us here know what it feels like to lose your temper in a similar situation, come on man, it was foolish, unecassary, an over reaction but shit happens in the heat of the moment, Kos deserves an oscar for his performance, what a drama queen, he really needs to stop that sillyness because it takes away from him as a fighter and his fanbase is only going to get smaller every time he does that sh*t. Personally I think you should have a point deducted for everyone trying to throw an illegal knee, I mean its not like you get of with a warning if you take out a gun in public and you aim for their head and shot but misses. I am sure the cops will be all like, "well he missed so no harm done".

koscheck is a strange character. On the one hand youve got a guy who is a very talented MMA fighter and is as hard as nails, on the other hand the same guy will fake and act out an injury in a disgusting manor which makes the sport and himself look bad. Daley was a fool for throwing that shot after the bell, but I thought the actions of Koscheck were worse. It really says a lot about a mans charactor if he can do things like that and be ok with himself about it, I think Koscheck showed his true colours when he was in TUF and is basically a bit of a tosser. A talented tosser, but still a tosser

This is hard to call. But to me Daley was worse in that he attempted an illegal strike which the attempt alone can change the reaction of Koscheck when he gets up giving an advantage of position to Daley and this was probably why Josh went with it, so he wouldn't lose a position war with Daley. Unfortunately it made him look fake which it was but I can see how He may have lost good positioning from trying to avoid the knee and would not want the 3 or 4 follow up shots to be the end of him. Then to top off his temper and childish attitude, Daley had to throw an after bell Sucker punch because he couldn't keep his nickers from twisting. Josh may have been exposed but there is possability to doubt he was intentionally trying to fix his fight as he was clearly in the lead where as Daley was trailing and desperate. Josh is fighting an uphill battle to get credability because he started bad and seems unchanged in many aspects but Daley takes the cake on this.

the illegal knee did not look like it connected, but there is no angle that make that positive. he may have connected or grazed him, but that isn't the point. the knee was thrown illegally with bad intentions and if it did connect, it's not something koscheck should have to worry about defending cause its illegal. when frank shamrock kneed renzo gracie on the ground, he complained saying renzo was faking and he came to fight and that's part of fighting. in a streetfight, renzo would be more ready for that. but when the rules say don't knee a grounded opponent, that means you don't have to defend that and that's what makes it hurt more when it happens. cause your not ready for it.
