Nick Diaz blames "shady promoter" for BJJ superfight no show

Nick Diaz was originally scheduled to face Estima in the main event of last night's World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, but to disappointment of grappling fans gathered at Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California, Diaz simply didn't show up.

Today, Nick Diaz (allegedly) released the following status on Diaz Brothers official Facebook page, accusing the WJJ Expo organizers for skewing the weigh-in rules.

Diaz is currently under temporary suspension for failing his post-UFC 137 drug test. Tomorrow, former Strikeforce Welterweight champion will appear before the Nevada State Athletic Commission for an official disciplinary hearing, looking to avoid a long-term suspension.

Does anyone know what the alleged changes were made to the weigh in rules?

I read that Estima came in 9 lbs over (189) so they changed the weight to 185 from 180. He made 185 the next morning.

I've also read on the internet that Obama is an alien lizard so I can't say how accurate that is.

According to Estima the weigh in was changed to suit Diaz.

According to Estima: They had no time arranged for the weigh in, Estima cut a lot of weight and made the 180 on fight day as he thought he was suppose to (there was witnesses including Ronda apparently). The promoter told him that Diaz made weight the night before (no witnesses outside the Gracie camp) and had already eaten so he wouldn't be 180 on fight day but it was okay.

So basically Estima had to cut weight on fight day and Diaz had apparently made weight the night before and already eaten and hydrated. If true that is a big advantage to Diaz, not the Brazilian.

Nick's excuse is pretty sad. Even if he was pissed off at the promoter, he should have at least showed up in person to convey his reservations about the event and apologize to his opponent. To just skulk off and leave your opponent hanging is BS.

isn't it normal to make the weigh ins one day before, so the athletes aren't that exhausted on fight day?

the no show was a typical diaz move :-) i like him!

Nah. In most the Jitz tournaments are more similar to wrestling tournaments. You usually weigh in the day of. (In my experience at least).

depends on what type of tournament you do. NAGAS and other smaller tournaments will let you weigh in the day before, usually with shit scales though lol

The IBJJF tournaments are the ones where you need to weigh in the day of. If you do the gi divison you need to weigh in with your gi on as well

NAGA gives the option of weighing in the day before or the day of unless that has changed recently (been a while since I last competed).

Nick Diaz BLAMES "shady promoter" for BJJ superfight no show

Guys who knows what happened. Diaz for all his faults is a charitable person and does a lot of charity work both hands on and through donations. I seriously doubt we are getting the whole story. I think it's ridiculous he didn't show and explain himself but I have personally seen promoters and other athletes do and say very shady stuff. Maybe nick is tired of the bull crap. Maybe he has reached the "falling down" state.

Without being completely racist brazillians often have a "pride" that allows them to make excuses for anyone brazillian. I have trained with kids from brazil that feel the need to hurt me because I am a white boy doing bjj. Bjj has turned into a gang mentality gym against gym and the politics behind the scenes are often really bad.

Not to make too many excuses for nick though. He could have handled this like a man and at the least made a written statement ceasar could have read

I agree too... if what others are saying about there being no set weigh in time is true then it sounds like a disorganized mess of an event.

If Diaz had issues with the weight of his opponent, he could have cancelled the night before.

If Diaz had issues with the promoter not donating money as agreed, he could have cancelled the night before.

Diaz was supposed to donate his purse to charity, but by not showing up, that purse does not get donated.

In the fights that night, opponents faced each other who were not in the same weight class---but it did not seem to be a major factor in the fights. Technique appeared to be the biggest factor.

The bottom line is that Nick is a fighter, and a Gracie black belt--and none of the issues he mentioned should have prevented him from fighting--and if they did, he should have let the organizers and fans know immediately.

I thought it was too soon fire him to get back into this kind of competition after the controversial loss to Condit.

I think Nick needs some time off to get his head straight and get this thing resolved with the commission before he makes another move.

I think Nick hasn't had his head straight for years. The kind of unpredictablity that brings kind of adds to his mystique as a fighter, and is one of the reasons people either love or hate him.

But at what point in his career does this change for him? And at what cost? I like the way he bucks the system. His personality outside the cage seems the same as when he fights.

But I'd like to see him get serious about things and put both his life and career back on track. There has to be a breaking point somewhere down the line.

As I said on the wall this sounds like the kind of weak excuse I get from my son when he doesn't show up (on time) for his curfew (which, BTW, is 3:00 am). Like all spoiled children behaving like brats, he should have his car taken away for a week ;-)

Bottom Line... Promoters wanted to screw Nick Diaz... Ain't gonna happen... It's my way or the highway for Nick.. So I agree with him on this one.... F@ck the haters... And that Brazilian shouldn't had been late in the first place for the weigh-ins.. He had months to prepare about his sickness and weight issues, or traveling bullsh!t excuses..... And him challenging Nick Diaz in an MMA fight is also stup!d.. His a nobody in an MMA cage, trying to be famous by fighting Nick Diaz... 209 member Nick Diaz would whoop his ass easy... This ain't no BJJ tournament. So yes.. War Nick Diaz.. Hope those fans got their money back.... It happen in The UFC all the time..

If I was Diaz, I'd get settled with the commission and then take Estima's challenge, beat him down, and then go back after that belt.

C'mon man! time to put your big boy pants on and act professional. Take some of your money and hire an official spokesperson or PR firm to deliver the word to all ASAP when you decide to flake again.

Footnote. Doesn't Nick have a meeting with Nevada State athletic commission on Monday? Perhaps he did not want to risk getting hurt for free in case he gets reinstated to fight MMA. Maybe the excuses were manufactured. Just saying!

Thats it!!! Nick has to use weed to calm before a fight and he knew they might test him at Monday's hearing and so he had to back out!!! Plus, Diaz seen at Area 51 rolling with a sasquach.

I find that excuse very poor.Isn't Renzo Gracie involved in the promotion. And isn't he related to Diaz trainer Cesar Gracie. From personal experience in MMA ( I book fights for MMA fighters) I can tell you that the BJJ community is very big on respect and clannish. What he did is a big disgrace in the BJJ world.Personally I think he didn't show because he thought he would lose.Nick isn't afraid of a real fight in the cage,I agree with that. But this is different. The guy he was facing is a BJJ superstar. Nick is proud of his being a BJJ Black Belt and for an ordinary MMA fighter,I'm sure he is very good at BJJ.But facing one of the cream of the crop,in just BJJ,there was a big chance he would lose and get embarrassed. We all know how Nick takes losses in MMA,and I think he didn't want his pride hurt.He probably agreed to the fight not realizing how really good that guy was supposed to be.Then when researching him,got nervous. In MMA people are pretty forgiving of peoples behavior. But I can tell you for a fact the BJJ world is not. As for the weight issue. Most tourneys I've seen let you weigh-in day before or day of.Some may be different, but day before weigh-ins are not unusual at all.
