Nick Diaz: GSP's training methods make him prone to injuries

Nick Diaz shared his thoughts about George St. Pierre's training methods, stating that the French-Canadian's training methods are too extreme. According to Diaz, St. Pierre's experimental workouts is what makes him prone to injuries, and are the main reason the UFC Welterweight division now has to crown an interim champion. Once again, Diaz bought his MMA record as an example, claiming that he has more fights than anyone in the UFC Welterweight division.

Quote via CagedInsider.com:

"I don’t think so. I think he’s hurt. I think he might’ve hurt himself. He shouldn’t have done that. If it hurts, don’t do it. I had to go through a lot of fights like that. You know, there were things I couldn’t do, and I couldn’t come in at 100 percent. So basically, heal and worry about your weight cause that’s all you’re gonna be able to do is make the weight and go out there and fight. Sometimes you win some, sometimes you lose some, and sometimes you can’t be at 100 percent though. But, no, you know, he hurt himself, and you know, the type of exercises he does too, your injury prone. You’re higher likely to hurt yourself doing explosive workout exercises. I have different type of workouts. I’m a different type of athlete, and I think that we get hurt less and we fight more. That’s why I have more fights. I have twice as many fights as most of these guys out here."

For once I am calling BS on something Diaz says. I am a personal trainer and what he said doesn't jibe. If you want to perform explosively, you have to train explosively. If you are going to perform at the upper levels of MMA you must be explosive. That is really all there is to it.

@XSpeedX, you'd be right if explosive was the only important attribute in fighting. Diaz has other strengths that offset his relatively less dramatic explosiveness. Muscle learning and recruitment is very specific and Choke is correct. If you train to be explosive you can be more explosive in the fight. Diaz's training fits his fighting style and GSP has the take down percentage he does because of his plyometrics etc.

Soo, you're wrong and Choke is correct.

He's not saying it's not effective in a fight, he's saying it makes one injury prone. Obviously GSP's explosive training methods have given him great success, however, it comes with it's own disadvantages. That's all. So you're both wrong. Like Nick says, he's a totally different type of athlete than GSP.

The Diaz bros are less explosive than most but that is a disadvantage and they are an exception to the rule. All things being equal, the more explosive fighter will win.

Also, GSP is NOT injury prone. He has only had two real injuries that we know of.

I agree they are an exception to the rule. I'm a big fan of the Diaz brothers, they have toughness and cardio for miles, and will drag their opponents into deep water and beat them. I just really admire that style.

people should train in all areas. but they also focus on what they are good at. if u wanna have a wrestling base then train to explode. if your a kick boxer your gonna train different. duh. neither one of you are "right" its up to the fighter and his style and strengths.

I agree. Gsp's style of take down are explosive ,and he is succesful , so he needs to train that way.

and XspeedX , Diaz is not as good as GSP so you cant compare.

I'm surprised that diaz was respectful in this video . he should be like that more often

I think your right and GSP's record shows that he's doing the right things.Diaz takes a shot at GSP every time he can.But he don't talk about why he disappeared /I'll believe you (coz you're a Personal Trainer)rather than these other guys who's workout is getting up from their Computers and walk to the Washroom and back!!!Well have a very Happy New Year Cheers

But you all have to give Diaz credit on how he fights...He trains BJJ, Boxing, Wrestling with guys like Shields, but where he excels is doing all those triatholons. CARDIO....Its a great way to develope cardio and its really hard to get hurt...so makes it relatively safe...

It does make sense what Nick is saying people are more prone to injury when training explosively there are a bigger chance of injury I mean EXPLOSIVE training it already sounds dangerous....:)

I have to say that, when I heard GSP got injured while working out AGAIN, that he may be over training.

When you can train the muscles to be super strong, the ligaments and tendons that anchor them to your bones find it hard keep up. They have a finite amount of load they can carry.

If this is true, I hope GSP's people make the adjustment. He'll be coming back to a very tough fight, not matter who challenges for the belt.

I agree with Crane on this fellas. The more you slam a door in your house, the more likely you are going to be doing some kind of repair on it in the future. But if you close it nice and easy, it will probably last just a little longer, and need less work to maintain as time goes on.

Yes his training is a little bit injury risky but you have to make sacrifices to be the best... And that training(olympic lifting, gymnastics and sprinting) keeps you injury free in MMA training when doing other explosive movements

the result of a GSP vs Diaz clash would be the same....a loss for Diaz.

The only place Diaz is not outclassed by GSP is in the shit talking house.

I like Diaz he,s tough and relentless ....but his style will not work well against George.

Its amazing what getting someone mentally defeated before the fight will do. Why is everyone so against the thought of Diaz doing well against GSP. That Sheilds fight opened my eyes to GSP and where he can be beat. Nick was right there also, he knows what he sees.

I have been telling people for almost three years now that Diaz can beat GSP. I've been laughed at, heckled, looked at like I was crazy, and "weaked". But I see it is close to becoming reality now, and before long we will see if Nick does have what it takes to knock GSP off of his pedastal. I have been waiting a long time for this; and can't wait to see it.

GSP is the ultimate fighter. Although I have a lot of respect for Diaz as a fighter, he does not stand a chance against the master. George trains to beat you at what you do best. That way when he beats you there is no room for excuses unless your name is B.J. Penn.

Nick Diaz is a punk. Yes, he has MMA talent and is a real warrior. However, until he loses his thug mentality and gives respect, he will NEVER receive respect from the fans or anyone else in MMA. Also, if he could not use his middle fingers to express himself, he would never have anything tot say. There is only ONE reason anyone would want to see this punk fight...to see him get his ass kicked and eventually GSP will do exactly that.

I haven't really seen any of GSP's whole fights since he beat Matt Serra. He destroyed Serra in the rematch but since then I haven't been able to stay awake for an entire fight of his. Maybe I drink too much or maybe I'm getting too old. Luckily for me, he will be fighting a good well rounded fighter for the first time in his career. I can't wait to see him get destroyed by Condit or Diaz so I won't have to watch somone look so scared of getting knocked out again. GSP is a great strategist, but I don't like spending $800 on a ticket to a fight to watch someone throw 20 jabs a round, and three combinations in an entire 25 minute fight. GSP is less exciting than Floyd Mayweather.

Diaz has some good points (never thought I would say that lol), however

GSP is the benchmark for MMA performance, yes he has become more conservative in his style of late but that has more to do with money, now that hes not champ (technically) I believe he will come back and aggressively take down, control and GnP Diaz by r3. He has to make a statement when he regains his belt he knows it has to be a finish. Lets put it this way have his PpV numbers been slipping? I bet they have. Did Mr. White have a little chat with him about it? You know he did.

wait for it Diaz over Condit by UD

GSP over Diaz by stoppage or Sub.

    then GSP moves to MW.
