Nate Marquardt out of UFC on Versus 4; Rick Story set to face Charlie BrennemanPosted on June 25, 2011, 03:09 PM by Joey Santosus
It appears former Middleweight title contender Nate "The Great" Marquardt will not be making his Welterweight debut this weekend after all.
The development, which has since been confirmed by sources, was first reported by MMAJunkie.com.
Instead, the Heavyweight clash between Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo, orginally set for the co-main event, will now fill the vacated headliner slot.
Marquardt's scheduled opponent, Rick Story, will in fact remain on the card, as Charlie Brenneman has stepped in to face the rising contender. Brenneman had a similar fate earlier this week when his opponent, T.J. Grant was forced out of the event.
The reason for Marquardt's sudden withdraw just a short time prior to the official fighter weigh-ins is unclear at this time, but reports indicate that he was not medically cleared to compete. In an official statement released by his camp, they referred to the incident as a minor setback and assured that Marquardt would still move forward with plans to fight at 170-pounds.
