Octagon veteran Melvin "The Young Assassin" Guillard related to his upcoming UFC on FX 1 main event encounter with Jim Miller as "the number one contender bout", thanking the UFC for a chance to prove himself after the disappointing loss to Joe Lauzon at UFC 136. Both Miller and Guillard are coming off defeats inside the Octagon, and will be looking to prove their worth as Top 5 fighters in the UFC Lightweight division. UFC on FX 1 will take place on January 20 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

    I don't think so Melvin.

MAYBE, MAYBE Jim Miller gets a shout if he wins and Bendo's champ. He's put together a lot of wins and his loss isn't that bad. Personally I think he'd still have to beat a top 3 guy. Look how many wins Bendo had to put together to get the shot.

But Melvin lost to Joe Lauzon who isn't even really top 5, because you dropped your hands and flew around like an idiot because you thought you'd won before you stepped in there. There's guys like Nate Diaz and Melendez waiting in the wings. There's also Lauzon and Guida and Pettis who are only a few fights away too. Don't get me wrong, I think Melvin fighting smart can beat ANYONE in the division. He's by far the fastest and one of the most powerful guys in the division. But he's in the UFC's most stacked division and has a lot of work to do to prove he's earned a shot IMO

The LW division is ridiculously stacked, you've got a lot of work to do before you can be considered

Melvin has to fight his immaturity first and then he'll be a champ.

    I completely agree en09si.

Melvin makes it sound like the UFC has told him he is fighting for the number 1 contender spot. If that is true (which I do not believe) then what would Joe Lauzon get if he beats Pettis? Melvin shouldn't be looking for short-cuts to the championship. He needs to get a few meaningful wins against other top guys before he deserves a shot. Jim Miller is a good start.

Don't forget abou Maynard. I think who wins this should fight Maynard.

Ken Flo and Cerrone are still up there

I agree with much of what you've said here, except for one part. I don't really understand your logic when stating that "maybe Jim Miller gets a shot if he wins and Bendo is champ."

Did you mean to say if Edgar is still champ? Because Henderson just defeated Miller in his most recent fight. Edgar has also beaten Miller, but at least that was back in 2006 and in a fight that took place outside of the UFC.

nah, if the number one contender is the number two guy in the division. I think that's a case you could make if the only guy to beat Miller is the champ

personally i think nate diaz deserves more a title shot than the winner of the pettis vs lauzon fight. i see 4 scenarios happening...

1- diaz has an immediate title shot

2- diaz fights the winner of guillard-miller and the winner gets a title shot (if guillard gets the title shot and lauzon wins over pettis that would be really unfair for lauzon)

3- the winner of pettis-lauzon gets the title shot (that will be IMO unfair to diaz)

4- diaz fights the winner of lauzon-pettis on a contender fight (that will make the champion wait to long... pettis and lauzon fight on the same card as bendo and edgar)

the option that has more sense to me is to diaz get an immediate title shot

Number #1 contender ? Dont think so, would make more sense if they gave that to the winner of pettis - lauzon, or nate diaz.

    I agree absolutely...

Melvin loss his No.1, 2,3 contention after losing to Lauzon.

Bendo if fighting now for it after he beat Miller and knocked him out of the brackett.....

Diaz, Etim, Lauzon, Barboza who all got winning streaks going...

#1 Contender bout is Edson Barboza vs. Nate Diaz, after Barboza beats Etim in Brasil

You may be right, but I think everyone is wrong regarding Barboza (although he'll probably beat etim).

Barboza is the most over-hyped fighter in the LW division. He is a striker that has won two razor-thin decisions against other strikers within the mid-tier part of of the LW divison, in Pearson and Njokuani. He'll probably beat Etim, but that doesnt earn anyone the right to fight in a no. 1 contender matchup. Although he will probably get it, and on that point you are right. The first time barboza fights a good wrestler he'll have an humiliating loss on his hands. He'll lose to Nate diaz too, despite his great leg kicks.

All I'm saying is this: Barboza is too well regarded by the public, which makes him a good way to make betting money as soon as he fights a top guy.

IMO barboza easily lost his fight against pearson. he is overhyped but i think he could destroy nate diaz legs with those leg kicks.

i dont think he will be so dumb to try to fight him the way cerrone did. but then i really dont see him beating a good wrestler like edgar, maynard, bendo, guida, etc.

By your own admission, you've never seen him fight a wrestler. No one has. That's a mighty large leap you've made there. Sounds like we may have a couple of bitter Pearson fans on our hands.

I just called Pearson a mid-level fighter in the UFC, so i presume you're not talking about me... or?

Anyways, i dont know why people weaked my comment, but i guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. But mark my words, as soon as barboza fights a top ten guy, he'll lose. A good striker, with little else to offer. He's a fighter that'll go away within a couple of years, unless he improves his game drastically.

even if he viciously knocked miller out i still see 2 more fights after minimum... he has the talent but people are still going to remember the lauzon fight and also the diaz fight... two fights in whch he was finished in.

nate diaz or the winner of pettis-lauzon should get the nxt shot. think melvin needs two wins to even be considered he just got smashed by lauzon.

I think after that 15 second KO, he might just want to shut up for a while.

He says his entrances are just who he is, not trying to be flamboyant. Yea right Melvin, the only fighter besides MO who hugs his own nuts.

You reffering to Jon Fitch being KO'd in 12 seconds?

Cause Melvin lost his last bout via submission... not KO.

Was generalizing it basically. First seconds he got knocked down bad, might as well been a KO he was done after that strike.

No way should this be a #1 contender match. Both guys are coming off some very convincing wins.

It seems like not long ago, LW was so stacked with #1 contenders. Then they ask for a title fight & end up losing before landing it.

The Lightweight division is by far the most stacked in the UFC.

I still can`t believe people think that Light heavy is the strongest division, in my opinion it is one of the weakest, but thats just my opinion.

Fair play to the UFC for taking into considering the way he finished his previous two opponents before losing to Lauzon, and giving him a relevant fight straight after a loss.

Just because he made a mistake in his last fight, does`nt mean you forget about how impressive he was before that.

The N1 contender match should be Maynard vs Diaz but I don't think Maynard should fight for the title any time soon. If Diaz wins he should get a title shot.
