A Welterweight clash between former division champ Matt Hughes and Diego Sanchez has been scheduled for a yet-to-be-announced card this fall.

UFC officials announced the match-up on Thursday.

Sanchez (23-4) moved back up to 170-pounds last year after failing to dethrone then-Lightweight Champion BJ Penn at UFC 107.  Though the transition was followed by a disappointing unanimous decision loss against John Hathaway, the TUF 1 winner returned with back-to-back victories over Paulo Thiago and most recently Martin Kampmann.  "The Dream," as he now prefers to be called, credits his decision to return to Jackson's MMA for his recent success.

Hughes (45-8), meanwhile, comes in off of a 21-second knockout loss against B.J. Penn at UFC 123 last November.  Prior to the defeat, the Hall-of-Famer was enjoying a three-fight winning streak, including victories over Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie, and Ricardo Almeida.

While there has been no exact date confirmed for the bout, it is expected to serve as part of the main card for one of the upcoming events this fall.

I'm definitely pumped for this fight but if Hughes loses, I'm sure he'll go into retirement. Which sucks but has to happen. What if the winner of this fight had to go up against BJ Penn next? That would be funny.

Hughes - Royce is a waste of a fight, a waste of a camp, a waste of a spot on the PPV portion of the card. It'd be a wash, it's annoying that people are even considering it.

Hughes - Sanchez is a LOT more interesting, but I'm going 100% in on Hughes being WAY too strong for the Dream. Seriously, Matt Hughes at age 37 has SOO much Old Man Strength, years of high level grappling, mere mortals such as you and I cannot understand how strong someone like him is. Even normal older dudes are automatically crazy strong, but when you throw in 30 years of wrestling and 20 years of high-level training, it's another world. Diego is but a boy compared to someone like Matt Hughes, I don't think the Dream has anything to offer and I see Matt Hughes beating him up before slapping on an armbar.

Hughes dont have a chin no more. It will only take one of Diegos wild swings to land for the win. But I do fancy Hughes to close the gap and own Diego before that happens. After the Kampmann performance i am puzzled as to how Sanchez has so many wins. he fought like an amateur last time out.

If Sanchez can't put Hughes away, then he has no place @ 170 and should go back to 155; and I say that as a fan. I like the guy. He sets a torrid pace and at this stage of Matt's career, MH should be no match for DS; and if Matt loses, then he should probably hang it up.

If Hughes wins - who do you give him as a next fight? Maybe you give him Kampmann.

Yes - If Diego can't be Matt Hughes at 170 he should go back down to 155. And if Hughes loses he should retire and I'm not the only person on this thread or the MMA world that is / would (be) thinking that. Matt has made no secret of his intentions to retire and soon. If I'm not mistaken, I thought I heard hims say six fights and that was at least two fights ago.

If you see the results and analytic of this differently, that's fine; I just see it differently.

I have no problems with Hughes going out on his own terms, but that also implies a win and the question becomes...where is he getting the win and against what (type of) quality opponent.

In terms of his skill set - I'd say Matt is a gate-keeper now, with no hope of being more than that. At least, that is my view of it.

Diego @ 155 - to me I never saw him look in better shape and his fight against Guida was one of the best fights I've ever seen; he looked great in that fight. I think his problem @ 155 is that he went down there expecting to run it and that didn't happen; I think he got frustrated. However, the competition @ 170 is even worse (as far as Diego is concerned). I stick with my original contention, if he loses he should go back to 155 and regardless, I like him more at that weight than I do 170. And again, I say this as a fan of Diego's. I think he is an awesome fighter. I just think he would have more success @ 155 than 170.

    You "couldn't" read it?

Here is a listing of literacy programs in America (find one in your area):

If literacy is not your issue, then perhaps focus is. If so, here's a good article on rebuilding your attention span:

Concluding - thank you for attempting to follow my posts and any comments, emanating from them....ah, F-### it...you've probably already stopped reading.

Diego - I think 155 fits him more. As to him putting on muscle; I saw muscle at 155, because it was sans the fat. At 170, I didn't see muscle, I saw muscle covered by fat; he's soft, to-say-the-least.

In regard to him moving back and it being unrealistic - the only thing unrealistic about it, is a solid commitment to a fighter's diet; sorry. And in terms of his speed @ 155 vs. 170 (cardio inclusive) I'll take DS @ 155, any day. And yes, his fight against Pariysian was great, but the I think his fight against Guida and the (subsequent) value of the victory was greater.

Hughes - I have nothing to say on that; you summed it up perfectly. :-)

What we agree on - DS can fight @ either weight. We also agree that he can make 155. We also agree that he's a terrific fighter.

Where we don't agree - Fat. Fat is fat edub, there are not forms of it. There reason he looks better at 155, is because the fat is stripped. In terms of him moving up to 170 and putting on muscle; I'm not left with the impression that is what he's trying to do; his build certainly suggests otherwise. One cannot simply put on 15 lbs of lean muscle mass (just like that). If that were the case GSP would be fighting AS, before the end of the summer.

What Diego has done (IMO) - is simply revert back to the life-style and eating habits that he can live with; @ 155 (all year round), there's probably not a lot of cheese burgers or tacos, happening and his build suggests that he enjoys his food. As to his cardio, there are guys out there that can carry the weight and still function in a fight; even at a high level. The point is, they could function better carrying less fat and more muscle. However and regardless of cardio, I personally think that he's slower @ 170.

His fights with Guida and Stevenson - sorry man, I'll take those fights over his fights with Thiago & Kampmann.

As to it being unrealistic - until he puts on the lean muscle mass he needs at 170, it's completely realistic for him to drop the weight. I mean edub, if Nate Marquardt can drop down to 170, Sanchez can make it to 155 and stay there.

Enjoy the fights tonight, edub. I'll be interested to read what you thought of them.

    Cheers,
