Quick Quote: Matt Hughes is not impressed with Joe Rogan's commentary for the Shields-Kampmann fight

“Interesting night of fights, I had several offers to bet on Brock, but I just didn’t place any bets on him. I didn’t know a lot about Cain, but I did know that he had some good wrestling credentials, he had better striking abilities, and he was going to use a lot more movement in the fight. So, I didn’t think Brock was going to lose like he did, but I knew there was a good chance Cain could get his hand raised. UFC kind of made a big deal about it. I really don’t know why, but I’m glad that the Mexicans have a heavyweight champion.

I consider myself an old guy and when some of the older fighters fight, I find myself interested. Tito was on the card, against Hamill and I didn’t think there was any way for Tito to win. Tito’s got that clothing line out, Team Punishment, and when I see people wearing the shirts, I always tease them that it should be “Team Punished;” but I would even go out on a limb and say that’s the last time we see Tito in the UFC.

Jake Shields fight was interesting to me. Jake ran out of gas, but still ended up getting the split decision. From a technical view, Kampmann had a terrible fight, in my opinion, he gave the fight to Shields. One thing I will say is Joe Rogan’s commentary was a little off during the fight. The ground game was pretty even in my book with Shields doing a little more controlling. Kampmann escaped to his feet several times and Kampmann had more submission attempts than Shields had, but listening to Rogan, you would have thought Shield had submitted him the first ten seconds of being on the ground. I really think the UFC could use a third man doing the broadcast, that has some experience inside the octagon. I don’t disagree with everything Rogan says, but there are a lot of things he says that I just laugh at.”

Matt shares his thoughts about UFC 121 on his website Matt-Hughes.com. UFC Hall of Famer will look to get a third consecutive victory in the UFC, this time facing the former Lightweight Champion BJ "The Prodigy" Penn next month, at the co-main event of UFC 123: Machida vs Rampage. Hughes is currently 45-7 in his MMA career, with a Submission victory over Ricardo Almeida in his last bout, at UFC 117.

I agree though cause in plenty of fight when joe has a favorite he

leans to that guy and does give the opponent his props......

when he is doing good, cause he is to focused on his fighter and that

makes the other fighter look bad for viewers cause you dont here chit

about the guy except the things he isnt doing and how good his guy

is regaurdless if the other guy is landing hits, or defending takedowns

True wolf. Rogan is an expert, in two disciplines (one of which he was a world-champion). He has done a LOT to educate fans. He's a big part of the reason that people don't boo or chant "gay" when it's a grappling match. Because they've listened to Rogans commentary over the years, and now they're educated, now they know what they're seeing.

he is a good commentator, but he is still Dana's bitch. they want shields their new acquisition to be seen in a good light. kampmann clearly won the fight, but it was fixed, and even Rogan was in on it.

Dana's bitch? Really? So that's why he's a huge fan of Fedor, Nick Diaz, Alistair Overeem (and a bunch of other non UFC fighters) and rarely has anything but praise for their abilities...

Rogan says a bunch of things that Dana wouldn't like; it's his independence of opinion that makes him cool. Check out videos where he talks about his political views etc and you'll see what I mean about him being a very independent thinker.

Ya Rogan has never taken criticism on his commentary hard in the past and always states he looks to learn from it, Hughes is right to some extent that Rogan was favoring Shields but then again Shields was pretty much just giving Kampman the submission attempts and using it to pass guard or advance position and none of those sub attempts really helped Kampman in the fight at all.

couldnt agree more with hughes, and thats why ex fighters could make the best ref's and judges. The only problem that could arise if fighters favoured more the style they had been, i.e thinking that a take down of a wrestler with some lay and pray was worth more than a dominant round of striking but id like to think they would be very professional in their views. Rogan will never be changed. if anything his bum chum should be gone.

Ex fighters as judges could have its downside though. They would be personal friends with a lot of the fighters, their bias could cloud their judgement or they could just purposely give their friend the edge for whatever reason.

Although...it couldnt be any worse than Cecil Peoples

Hugues is a great fighter in my opinion but other than that his just a redneck with a weird set of rules and ideas. Just watch his training at the ultimate fighter and you will see what I mean... even the guys on his team found the guy a weirdo.

That said, Rogan makes some mistakes in commentating, as anyone else does in his work, bu his by far the best colored commentator out there. The emotion he transmits and funny remarks he makes during the fights is something no one else does. Having a fighter by theire said can be a good idea some times (Couture and other fights already did that on prior UFCs) but its not mandatory, I think Rogan and Gold do a good job!

Thats what he is supposed to do... He does a great job of explaining what is happening and what to watch for next. Otherwise, most casual fans would have no idea what was happening on the ground. If more people would be quiet and listen they might learn something and stop booing every time the fight touches the ground. As far as shouting.... I think you have Rogan confused with Michael Schiavello. Even Rutten is louder than Rogan.

I am not arguing that he doesn't know BJJ but it has been well documented his bias towards grapplers and oftentimes it spills over to his commentating duties. I am not bashing him whatsoever I've hung out with him last Spring and he was great.

Rogan is a clown, and very unprofessional. He's loud and obnoxious, and has terrible stage presence. He should stick to stand up comedy. He has some knowledge of MMA but not a lot, and I often find myself laughing at what he says, not because it is funny, but because it is so far from accurate.

Having said that his sidekick has no idea what he is talking about and has no place in MMA.

Sign Bas Rutten and have a guest fighter commentate for each UFC event and you will solve both problems. Insight from a great retired fighter and insight from a great current UFC fighter.

    Dana- hook that up, immediately.

Love Rogan. He does a great job, great passion and we need him at the UFC but I have to agree with Matt on this one. Man, you guys are giving way too much credit to Hughes. The guy is a fighter, and a good one too! But thats about it. His "words" dont carry any weight or wisdom, he knows about fighting, he doesn't understand commentating or show business at all. Rogan gets MMA out there, his passion for the sport is the reason his commentating in the UFC. Many of you "young" kids dont remember the first times he came and commentated on the UFC but he even dissed out his current job at Fear Factor saying UFC was way better!

His job is to promote the sport and give "uneducated" fans an understanding of what is going on i the ring, maintaining at the same time a high entertainemnt level in his comments. He has to be professional and explain whats happening but at the same time he has to be funny and whitty.

Not everyone is a MMA expert or practitioner so stop be pedantic (as Hughes), Rogan has knowledge of the art (BJJ brown belt under Jean Jacques Machado with a transition to Eddie Bravo where he's a purple belt and Black belt in Taekwondo) and a great passion for MMA which he passes along easlly, his enthusiasm is contagious and personally I think his "style" of comments promotes the sport a lot and makes it fun to watch/listen. Bas Rutten his fun to watch but mostly for a hardcore MMA fan, regular MMA fans and people that start to watch the sport will enjoy Rogans comments.

As I said before, Hughes should focus on his fighting and his opponent, commentating on commentators is something best left for people that have a more ample view of the industry and of show business itself.

hughes was making a valid point that Rogan was talking out of his azz. he may well be a good commentator but that don't make him perfect. No one is above reproach, and an experienced guy like Hughes should not be ignored just cos rogan has been a good commentator down the years. if he's talking shite he's talking shite, FACT!!

Im not saying otherwise, everyone can criticize everyone, Hughes didnt only criticize what he said wrong, he went to lengths and said Rogan says things that are wrong all the time and make him laugh. I think it was an necessary critique and people here, as always, jumped the bandwagon and are now saying he is a bad commentator which is far from the truth - Hence my post that Hughes should steak to fighting and focus on that and that people are giving him way much credit because the guy, apart from fighting, seems like a duche, as he showed on the Ultimate Fighter Hughes vs Serra.
