Mark Munoz gets snubbed by Chris Leben camp - "We want Vitor Belfort or Brian Stann"
Posted on July 10, 2011, 05:50 AM by Anton Gurevich"At this point we've talked about a few people and Chris Leben's name came up, coming off a big win. That is definitely a fight Mark would be interested in. There are a lot of good fights for Mark at 185. But we would definitely be interested in Chris Leben. He's not calling him out or anything. Mark just wants to fight the next guy who will get him closer to a title shot."
Malki Kawa, Chris Leben's manager: "Let's say Vitor Belfort beats [Yoshihiro] Akiyama, that fight [with Belfort] makes sense to me. Vitor is somebody near the top of the division. He's a guy who has accomplished a little more than Mark at this point. Mark has everything to gain by beating Chris Leben or a Brian Stann at this point, but it's not necessarily the same thing in the opposite way." - MMAMania.com
Despite Malki Kawa's statement, Mark Munoz is currently on a three-fight winning streak, while Vitor Belfort is coming from defeat to fight Yoshihiro Akiyama, and Brian Stann steps inside the Octagon against Chael Sonnen in October. Mark Munoz is definitely in the mix, and a great fight for Chris Leben to climb up the Middleweight ladder. Mark Munoz's overall record inside the Octagon is 6-2, with notable victories over Kendall Grove, Nick Catone, CB Dollaway and of course Demian Maia. Other options for Mark Munoz include Chris Weidman (6-0) and the kneebar specialist Rousimar Palhares, who fights Dan Miller at UFC 134.

Given Chris Leben's inconsistent record in the past couple of years, it's tough to say where it would put Mark Munoz if he beat him. Leben's back on the map after that Wanderlei knockout, but I can't see him maintaining this kind of prowess against guys like Vitor or Okami. Munoz has been pretty meteoric though. His only MW loss is to Okami, and that alone was by split decision.
I think it could actually be the other way around. Munoz might have a lot to gain if he fought the likes of Belfort, whereas a victory against Leben might not give him such a degree of certainty in the MW division.
Maybe Munoz just needs a step up in competition to see where he's at, and the same goes for Leben. Both these guys could use a fight against a top tier opponent to see exactly where they rank.
vitor will knock leben out. too fast, too technical and doesn't rely on his chin to carry him through fights. leben wont last 1 round with him. Leben will always struggle against more technical guys.
So basically Leben wants to fight a striker
Chris knows Mark is skilled in alot of ways not just standing there
throwing blows Vitor is kinda like Wanderlia just younger ...Leben
is hoping for that stand up battle with Munoz he is likely to get beat
and mark with constantly take leben down and win a decision. Everyone was on the leben bandwagon, then he got beaten by stann, now he has beaten a washed up wand and everyone is getting carried away again. next thing people will say he deserves a title shot. dream on.
I don't know if another match against Stann would be the best move for Leben right now,
It would be better than a fight with Munoz were Leben would most likely be out wrestled, the smartest thing for him right now is to fight one of those two. I give props to his camp very savy.
i dont know why leben deserves a rematch against stann , since he clearly got beaten.
He was also clearly sick in that fight. He looked feverish. I am not saying that he would have won otherwise but it is likely he would have at least done better had he been healthy.
Interesting take. Leben claimed to have been sick from eating candy after the weigh-in, not so much "flu" sick.
I had heard he was SICK, sick with a fever and everything. I could be wrong but watch that fight. He looked flushed and sweaty entering the cage. After seeing the fight I would have to say Stann has the superior technique regardless (Duh) but Lieban did look sick.
Leben never looks entirely healthy. Come on, he likes to be punched in the face and then swing haymakers like a zombie. And now you are telling me that you noticed he was sick. Sorry but I don't believe those crappy excuses. If he was sick he shouldn't have fought, no rematch worthy IMO.
Leben vs. Belfort would be great assuming Vitor beats Akiyama ... Joe Silva make it happen!
I might be speaking as a Leben fan though, that potential win could put Leben near the top of the heap and I think it's a fight that Chris could do really well in.
mark will just outwrestle him out
Munoz is still not nearly as well known as Leben, so it would not make much sense for Leben to fight him at this point. On the other hand, being a young, talented prospect; it looks good on the resume to have Leben as a stepping stone on it for the world to see. Just ask Brian Stann.
He doesn't deserve a rematch
Have to agree with the statements of a few others ..
Leben should not be in the position to dictate whom he fights next.
He lost to Stann (although i do believe a rematch would end differently) and then beats a guy most feel is done in the sport.
Where Munoz just beat a top ranked fighter in Maia.
Munoz is 11-2 ..
Last loss was a SPLIT DECISION versus Yushin Okami (close fight)
Only other loss was 2yrs ago when Matt Hamill surprised him with that head kick that most remember.
I have never seen Munoz dominated in a fight by anybody.
i would say he got dominated by hamill. Of course he's one of the most improved fighters I've seen now. Okami was a split but I'll have to rewatch that. I remember someone saying he looked like a child holding on to Okami's leg in that fight. I dont remember why it was a split. Of course I still have him ahead of Leben as does most of lowkick. He should fight shitsting to see whos moving up to top 5
Leben wants BIG names, he really doesent care about the belt.
Leben is my favorite fighter, has been for 5 years, he is from
my hometown in Gresham, Team Quest fighter.
With that said, I dont care if he ever gets the belt either, i just want to see him in exciting fights with top name guys. Leben brings it, and if a remember correctly he was the UNDERDOG in the W. Silva fight, after he KO's him, its all about Wandy's weak chin, and not about Lebens big left hand. Pretty anoying for a Leben fan, to have to read story after story about wandy,s chin and none about Lebens power.
Vitor VS Leben... Vitor lands a few, then gets hit with the big left and goes night night cuz com'on people we all know vitor has that weak chin now that A. Silva booted him directly in it.
WAR Leben ! Keep doubting it people
It's simple. Leben is good but is not a contendor. A quick knockout in a brawl means nothing. When you are brawling it's the luck of the draw
He sure gets LUCKY alot lol
I hate when fighters try to choose and pick who they fight
I think Mark is the only guy in his division who even wants to fight Brian Stann
