Top Featherweight contender, Mark Hominick, who will challenge division Champion Jose Aldo for the title at UFC 129 in Toronto, discusses his opponent, as well as his training and preparation for the bout.  In addition to working with BJJ black-belt Jorge Britto, Hominick reveals that he has also brought in national wrestling champs and Olympic level boxers in preparation for, what he says, is the biggest fight of his life.

The match-up will mark Aldo's promotional debut, as he puts his belt on the line for the third time since dethroning then-champ Mike Brown at WEC 44.  The Brazilian followed up with successful title defenses against both Urijah Faber and Manny Gamburyan before being named the UFC's first ever Featherweight Champion.

UFC 129 is set to take place April 30th from the sold-out Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.  The stacked card will be headlined by a Welterweight title clash between division Champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Jake Shields.

Aldo is an animal. I don't see anyone in the featherweight division beating him.

Dream on. Hominick is good, but Aldo is in another league, and GSP is going to show Shields what a real champion is. You really have no clue, do you.

Hominick is an excellent test for Aldo. he looked sharper than ever in his last fight and a repeat performance will see Aldo with his hands full. By no means a one sided affair that some seem to think this will be. Hominick can also go full on pace without tiring just like Edgar can, so if it goes to the later rounds he may test Aldo's cardio.

I kinda agree with you. I admit i'm no expert on these lighter weight classes but has Aldo beaten any dangerous strikers ? When he whopped Manny I was like how the **** can beating a guy like him make you P4P no.3 even the win over Faber I was like if Anderson Silva only leg kicked someone for 5 rounds you'd all give him hell no doubt. Hominick is a talented striker so if Aldo whoops him i'll hold my hands up however Frankie Edgar beating Penn twice and drawing against Maynard is way impressive than what Aldo has done imo the difference in competition is quite big. Edgar has more of a case for being no.3, but somehow Dana has fooled a lot of intelligent people into ranking him at no.3.

I must also add any division where Manny Gamburyn is good enough to not only get a title shot but knock out the former champ is pretty weak.

also although frankie is a lightweight and aldo a feather weight jose aldo is quite a bit larger than frankie edgar. I agree aldo gets way too much props for what he has done p4p3 more like 8 or 9. off the topic can anybody tell me why it is prounounced Jo-se instead of the more traditional Ho-se possibly just a portugeese variant?

I'm sorry but Aldo fully deserves his Featherweight king status.

He DOMINATES every single person he steps into the cage with.

If you understand standup you'll agree that Jose has very good skills. The kid knows what he is doing on the feet.

@mmauk The reason we don't give Aldo shit for kicking the living shit out of Faber for 5 rounds is due to the WAY he kicked Faber for 5 rounds. Aldo has the meanest fastest kicks in his division....heck most likely the sport if you ask me. Faber had bad tissue damage!

Mark my words, Aldo will reign for a LONG time. The only way I ever see him being beat is via submission. On the feet...that kid is close to unbeatable. No one in his division has the SPEED and brutal standup he has...period.

The only way Hominick can take Aldo is by miracle submission on the ground. And hey...Aldo is a damn BJJ blackbelt!!

I dont necessarily think it is Dana fooling people into believing that. I think because Edgar was the man who dethroned Penn, he instantly turned off a section of the fans towards him. I agree Edgar has achieved more in the sport than Aldo by a long shot - indeed Aldo hasn't faced, nevermind beaten anyone of Penns calibre. that does not mean Aldo is not as good, he may turn out to be better, but he has much to prove still.

You are right about Aldo, he is superb. But.... it is a mistake to assume he is light years ahead of everyone else. Hominick is also superb if you care to watch some of his fights. he may not be as good as Aldo, but I doubt he is very much inferior to him and see this as being a close fight.

The arguement isnt about Aldo's featherweight king status, its his P4P status. I personally dont see him as a P4P top 5. Ya he is great, but to hold him up there with the A.Silvas, the GSPs, Cain velasquez's or the frankie edgar's out there. I give him props for the way he dismantled Faber and id def have him in my top 10 p4p but not my top 5. If he can beat Hominick decisively, itll prob sway me more towards Aldo, but I dont think he's been fully tested yet.

This will probably end up being the best fight on the card. I have mad respect for both Aldo & Hominick; they are both incredible fighters, both of whom show up to fight - always.

I will be pulling for Mark, but he has one heck of a mountain to climb in terms of Jose Aldo. If MH can pull it off, then "wow"; that is one big scalp. JA is easily one of the best fighters in the world. He is easily, IMO, the best fighter in that division. He's a relentless and very smart monster; both on his feet and on the ground. With that said though, MH is no easy fight; no walk in the park - even for Jose. He one of the most mobile and effective strikers out there and he packs a lot of power. He also has no quit in him. He's one of those fighters whose moniker actually fits - The Machine.

As a fan - I don't think you can lose, here. This is going to be a very good and entertaining fight, regardless of the outcome / winner. The only thing that could screw this fight up (in the ring) would be a crappy ref. I hope this bout gets a good one - Herb Dean. All important, meaningful or title matches should get HD; he's dependable.

I am pumped for this fight too--and I am rooting for Hominick.

But I agree with your assessment--Aldo deserves to be top in his division--if Hominick pulls this off--it wil shock the MMA world.

To be honest, I believe this actually will be Aldo's toughest test to date.

I'm a big fan of Aldo, but all the dudes he destroyed to become the Featherweight champion are grapplers who for some reason don't know how to check kicks.

This won't be the case against Hominick. Mark Hominick actually has legit stand up and has competed at the highest levels of kickboxing in Japan's Shoot Boxing promotion.

If Aldo is going to beat Hominick, he's not going to get away with the current level of standup he has. He'd have to make good use of his BJJ Black Belt, but there's one thing that could be a huge difference maker in Aldo's stand up game. Jose has spent a lot of time recently with K-1 Kickboxing legend Andy Souwer.

If Hom goes into this fight knowing to watch from leg kicks, he will do quite well. His striking will be the key to victory here. If he can find the reach, watch for leg kicks then he will WIN. Aldo will be dropped and forgotten about.

its comments like yours that scream HATER, how would a loss make him forgotten? after tearing through that division for this long? you're saying 1 loss and it's over? lol he's a top 3 p4p ranked fighter right now, always exciting and trains with a great camp even if by some miracle he lost he'd K.O his next opponent spectacularly and be next in line for the title again and there's NO way he'd lose twice. but none of that will be necessary because he'll win this fight.

I am rooting for Hominick, but it is hard to do since Aldo is so good.

Hominick is fired up, and fighting in his home country, with 55, 000 fans all on his side--so you never know. He has better striking than Faber and Gamburyan IMO, but whether it is good enough only time will tell.

I am noticing a mystique around Aldo, similar to Anderson Silva--where even the slim possiblity of Aldo losing is not considered by many fans. I'd like to see Hominick win just to see the shock on fan's faces.

I'm betting on this being Fight of the Night.

My gut tells me to predict Aldo as the ultimate winner, but I have a feeling that Mark will come into this fight in absolutely optimal form... it's a huge venue - the largest in UFC history in fact - and nearly every fan will likely be chanting his name, so he undoubtedly feels a unique pressure that has been urging him on during his training. He's a lethal striker to begin with, so given the added pressure (and the intensity that I can gaurantee MH will display), Mark poses a legitimate threat to Aldo. This should be one hell of a fight.
