Lyoto Machida vs. Phil Davis possibly in the works

When Phil Davis was forced from his main event fight against Rashad Evans at UFC 133 due to a training injury, one name that came up to possibly replace him was Lyoto Machida. The UFC and Machida were unable to come to financial terms and eventually Tito Ortiz replaced Davis. Evans went on to dispatch Ortiz via second round TKO in that bout.

For those wondering what would be next for Machida and Davis, the answer may very well be, each other. “We already contacted them and we’ll be able to talk more about that soon. He (Davis) is the most concrete option in the division. He’s be a huge opponent for Lyoto, who’s one of the biggest idols of the sport in Brazil and needs to fight again soon”, Machida’s manager Jorge Guimarães told Yahoo! Esportes via Tatame.

Davis is 9-0 in his MMA career with his last victory being a unanimous decision over Antônio Rogério Nogueira in March of this year.

Machida, a former UFC Light Heavyweight champion is 17-2 in his career and coming off of a first round knockout victory over Randy Couture at UFC 129, which took place in April.

The knee injury that Davis suffered during training for UFC 133 was not believed to be severe.

Should be an easy one for Lyoto who has the best tdd defense in mma plus an incredible offense. Seems like a bad match up but who knows.

I was thinking the same thing - this will be a huge wake-up call to Phil Davis. Machida is the quintessential wrestler-killer in my eyes, with his great range-finding, elusive foot movement, and pinpoint striking.

This fight will show whether Phil Davis belongs with the top guys of the LH division...He's an outstanding wrestler and fighter, but he's not fought yet the best of the best (Machida/Rampage/Jones...)...

best tdd?? I'd give that one to GSP but I do see Lyotto able to keep this one up for the majority of the fight. Wich obviously = Lyotto winning.

That's true for sure Machida has the best take down defense in the light heavyweight division but mma math doesnt work always, for example Rampage vs Machida.

I think that Lyoto is too much for Davis, truthfully who has Davis fought other than Nogeria who I think is way overrated

That wasn't a problem of MMA math, that was a problem of MMA judging - so said Rampage.

True, I also believe Machida won the fight but he wasn't able to dominate and use his '' leap in leap out '' style. But in that fight I think he was way to cautious because he was coming off a knock out loss, afraid to Rampage KO power.

I don't really think Davis and Machida are on the same level.

Machida should take this one pretty easy .. unless he gets stuck against the cage.

I think Davis is being thrown to the wolves AGAIN. It thought so against Rashad and I think so for Machida. However, the fight will still sell and I'll definitely watch it. Davis should fight somebody more like Forrest, Tito, or Bader before mixing it up with the top top guys. Just my opinion

Hopefully Davis is using his time off wisely. He hasn't had any real time between fights since he joined the UFC until now, so he should have time to make some adjustments. His striking has been real stiff in the past, but if he can smooth it out enough to set up the takedown and brush up on some submission defense, he could pose some problems for Machida. The problem is, I think Machida poses more problems to Davis in the standup department with his superior timing, distancing and tdd.

I love Machida .Yes he'll beat Davis but beyond that I'm not sure I definitely don't think Lyoto has anything for Bones, nor does Rashad .You saw what Machida did to him wait till Jones tears him up.I don't see anybody taking it away from jones for awhile.I don't even want to talk about Rampage vs Jones ,I think he'll retire after he gets mangled by Jones he thinks he has all this experience but he's in way over his head!

This fight could turn out to be something of a dud. Lyoto has superb TD defense and is very elusive. Davis probably does not have the stand up game to trouble Machida and will struggle to get the fight on the mat. So it could be a cat and mouse affair with neither fighter engaging much.

That's a great matchup, looking forward to this fight, even if, in my opinion, Machida has way more chances to win. I'd see Machida winning by TKO or just stop Davis' td and punish him with a hundred strikes

in MMA and UFC record comparison Davis has fought NOBODY close to Machida's caliber or faced what Machida has fought. This is just another KTFO win for Machida bc everyone knows how quick he is on top of his elusiveness, counter ability, KO power, and not to mention his ability to destroy wrestlers. Davis shouldn't be fighting Machida or Evans at this point in his carrer, its just unfair to him.
