Former Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida, who will challenge current title holder Jon "Bones" Jones at UFC 140, discusses his opponent, as well as his training and preparation for the bout. Machida acknowledges the element of surprise that Jones brings to the cage, but says he will be prepared for whatever "spectacular things" the champ will do. Photo: Francis Specker

Lyoto Machida

"I watch and study Jon Jones' fights thoroughly, and really, it's about preparing for everything. What spectacular thing is he going to do? Is he going to fly or is he going to be diving in? There's always going to be a surprise factor with Jon Jones. All you can really do is prepare for everything he might try to do. If I do that, I will be ready to face whatever he is going to bring during the fight. I have been preparing and training 100-percent and I'm gonna be 100-percent the day of the fight. I am going to go in there and win and get the belt back. I will be the Champion again."

Machida is certainly smart enough and disciplined enough to be able to work out how to beat jones.... but even if you know how to beat him.. its still going to be very hard for anyone.. someone still needs to really test jones' chin though... someone needs to tag him hard and see how he reacts.. machida and rashad are certainly quick enough to but can they close the distance?... obvs hendo can hit him but can he close the distance?

Until someone works out how to beat him Its going to take a perfect moment or a perfect performance from someone to beat jones

PS im not even a massive jones fan at all but its ignorant not to respect the mans talent

If someone is "always has a surprise factor", how can you be ready for everything he does?

I think Lyoto will have a hard enough time dealing with what Jones does in every fight. Remember Rampage saying he thought he was ready for that spinning elbow?

Machida could win. But the only way I see anyone beating Bones is by being aggressive enough to take him out of his comfort zone. And that comfort zone has the longest reach in the UFC.

I don't think Lyoto has the tools to do that. He's a counter-puncher. Notice how he's talking about preparing for what Jones might do, instead of imposing his will...

he dodged the spinning elbow a bunch of times wtf are you talking about.

counter attackers prepare for what other fighters might do....its what makes them a counter striker....counter strikers dont necessarily impose their will the way you are saying. They impose their will be slipping attacks and countering with their own.

Jones does little to surprise, maybe a move or two that dont really work. But Im sure their will be plenty of shin and knee strikes to try to dictate the fight by Jones. Machida should have found a way to counter those since he works with Silva

Rampage also did not dodge the elbow a couple of times. I'm talking about wtf Rampage said. Go watch the tape. He specifically said that he thought he had prepared for the elbow, and still got caught.

You missed my point. Of course counter-attackers don't impose their will, they counter the other guys. What I was say is, that countering won't work against Jones, to beat him you'll have to be the aggressive one. That's not Lyoto's style, which is one reason why I think he'll lose.

"Does little to surprise?" I guess you missed that part of the quote where Lyoto says Jones always do something surprising. Jones is style almost custom designed to stop counter punches. He strikes quickly, from far away, and at unpredictable angles, and then moves back

Hard to counter something that is gone before you realize you've been hit.

Good to see the anti-Jones auto-weak crew out working late. Whoever you are, make me laugh. I like Jon Jones as a person, but if you don't, fair enough.

But as a fighter, he is already something special. If he wins, this will be his 3rd champ/former UFC champ defeated in a calendar year. As far as I know, that's never been done.

He's already started rewriting the record book and is shaping up to be the most dominant fighter of his generation.

Don't like him? Your entitled to your opinion. But as a fighter, the dude has already achieved enough in MMA to deserve respect.

Some people said Michael Jordan wouldn't get far because they didn't like his ****y attitude. We all know how that turned out.

1 out of 4 spinning elbows got through to Rampage. Rampage did well in dodging those.

This has nothing to do with Anti jones.

You said that counter attacking wont work.....well how the hell do you know. Sure Jones has reach but who are you to say that the only way is Machida being aggressive. Machida is such an excellent counter striker that if anyone is going to be looking to counter and win, in that fashion, its Machida

Your post came off as know it all, what I say about MMA and gameplans is the end all be all. Thats why it was weaked. Because people disagreed.

But its nice to see Jones' fans ready to defend their immortal savior at the drop of a dime

I doubted Machida when he fought Thiago Silva (what ever happened to him?) and Machida pummelled him. I'm hoping the same will happen again.

Thiago I think got suspended for roids, or urine of an animal...not joking. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong.

Excited about this fight. Fan of both figthers. Regardless of who wins, I'll be happy for them.

Nobody can dispute that Jones is a dangerous opponent for anyone but if i had to pick a fighter who could actually get a shot in on Jones and possibly test his chin, which is still an unknown quantity, Machida would definately be one of my top picks. He is just as unpredictable and he also has some awesome throws, being a black belt Judoka, if he can get in close enough to clinch. I also like the way he leaps in and out lightning fast with punches and he also has heavy hands. Another thing i think will give him an edge is his timing, which i actually think is better than Jones'. The main advantage Jones has imo is his reach but i genuinely think Machida is smart enough to manipulate the fight to his own strengths, he is a whole different ball game to anybody else Jones has faced. I hope Jones takes him lightly but really i think he's smarter than that. All the same, i really like a re-focused Machidas chances in this fight, it's going to be a great fight man.......

65/35 jones but I beleive no one else would be better than 35% chance against him,... If lyoto loses JBJ will rule the division umtil he moves up.

Machita imo will be the toughest title defence for Jones.I thought that Shogun would be stiffer competition than he ended up being......by a long shot. But like terra said, Machita is unpredictable and fast, with the power to KO anyone he touches. He fights both smart and agressive, and has a fluidity to his style. Jones only improves every time he goes out up to this point in his career. He still has the same moves that he started with, only now he's got it all dialed in and polished up. These guys he faces know what he is gonna do and what Jones brings to the fight; but can they keep him from doing these things? No-one has been able to do it yet. I hope Machita can be the first to expose some holes in the armor of Bone's game.

Jones a very calm fighter made him more dangerous for a kill may comparing him to Silva the master of predator to taunt and stalk on prey for a mistake and frustration,so Machida a hunter become hunted or not depend on a better gameplan to executes the plan.

Machida TKO by Rua with poor gameplan and he was nervous and a decision lost by Jackson because too caution maybe after a first ever loss with a bitter tasted,if Machida come to fight to a must win situation and a right attitude to focus on a better gameplan and staying calm ...most likely wining by a draw decision.IMO

I think Machida can do this. He's an incredible fighter and certainly has the skills to pull this off, but the odds are slightly against him.

I am calling Machida to win this one but Jones is very dangerous. If Jones does win I can't think of anyone else with the style to beat him. Hopefully someone new coming up the line. He has really cultivated a bad guy persona since he got his title shot.
