Pound for Pound

Dominick Cruz's impressive performance earned him the #10 spot on this edition of LowKick Community Pound for Pound rankings, while the rest of the list remained quite the same. Next two months will be crucial for Pound for Pound rankings, with Anderson Silva, Fedor Emelianenko, BJ Penn and Jon Fitch fighting in February, as Alistair Overeem, Shogun Rua and Fabricio Werdum are expected to fight in March.

Heavyweight

This month UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez continued to occupy the 1st row of Heavyweight rankings. Number one contender for UFC Heavyweight title Junior dos Santos dropped one place in the rankings, allowing Alistair Overeem to close the Top 3 with a slight advantage. Upcoming Strikeforce Heavyweight Tournament includes four of LowKick.com Top 10 Heavyweights: Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Fabricio Werdum and Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. All on the same side of the bracket.

Light Heavyweight

UFC 126 participants Jon Jones and Ryan Bader will fight for a Top 3 spot in Light Heavyweight rankings on February 12th, as the winner is also expected to get a shot at Shogun Rua's UFC Light Heavyweight title. Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Rafael Cavalcante closes the list on 10th place, as the title challenger Dan Henderson ranked 8th, and former Champion Gegard Mousasi is 7th.

Middleweight

No changes in Middleweight rankings this month, as UFC's Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami form the Top 3. Belfort and Anderson Silva will square off for the UFC Middleweight title next weekend, headlining UFC 126 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The winner of the fight will square off against Yushin Okami, who earned his title shot by defeating Nate Marquardt at UFC 122 in Germany.

Welterweight

Georges St. Pierre's triumph at UFC 124 dropped Josh Koscheck to 6th place on the rankings, allowing Thiago Alves and Nick Diaz to form the Top 5. Ranked #9, Paul Daley will square off against the DEEP Welterweight Champion Yuya Shirai on February 26th at BAMMA 5 event in England, as the victory could catapult "Semtex" to the 5-8 region in the rankings. The situation is not expected to change until George St. Pierre and Jake Shields will fight for Welterweight supremacy on April 30th, at the long-anticipated UFC 139 in Toronto, Canada.

Lightweight

Gray Maynard solidified his place as #2 Lightweight in the World, after a dramatic Draw in the UFC Lightweight title fight against Frankie Edgar and UFC 125. Anthony Pettis is the most surprising entry this month, positioning himself at #4, ahead the likes of George Sotiropoulos and Eddie Alvarez. Jim Miller's submission victory over Charles Oliveira earned him the #10 spot in the rankings, as Takanori Gomi and Evan Dunham found themselves out of the list.

How come Fedor is ranked above Cain in p4p but not at heavyweight? They are in the same weight class, so it makes no sense for a different guy to be ranked higher in p4p than at heavyweight.

Maybe becuase Fedor weighs a bit less and has fought heavier oppenents? Thats the only reason I could imagine, but I doubt people even thought of that when they put him there.

I am gonna say Jon Jones will beat it if he stays in the game long enough and fights enough. Fedor is my favourite fighter ever, but I don't think I have ever seen a fighter so dominant and well rounded at such a young age. I think Evans, machida and Rua will all be watching this guy with a little trepidation.

absolutely hate how over looked jim miller is in the lightweight rankings. i personally think charles oliveira is going to be something very special in the lightweight division in the next few years, and for him to finish him like that was impressive. i think he could beat ken flo and bendo, and would mess aoki up in the stand up, however don't fancy his chances with aoki on the ground.

pettis shouldn't be no.4, top 10 lightweight without a doubt, but not no.4 at the moment. george sotiropoulus, and eddie alvarez have cemented those spots in my mind, and regardless of that ridiculous kick, he should be below them at 6.

ALSO, i am looking forward to the reem shutting dana's mouth about him not being a p4p or top 10 heavyweight fighter in the strikeforce tournament. however, in my heart still want fedor to win :)

The only reason I dont consider Jim Miller top ten rite now is that everytime he has faced a top 10 opponent he has lost (Edgar and Maynard) and I agree with Pettis....he is too high up and personally I believe Kenflo should b way higher than 8 and Jorge Santiago deserves some more love in the MW division, the guy is a beast

Why aren't they opening the rankings until the 15th? The new rankings should start immediately after the old ones end.

these lists are bullshit, its more of a "rank your favorite fighters" list than it is actual P4P

    P4P Favorite Fighter? ' )

P4P MMA logic states that if all the weights of the fighters were equal, who would be the best fighter?

The problem with this logic is that weight changes how a fighter fights. If a LW could fight at HW with the same speed but with the power of an HW, then the LW would almost always be P4P best. On the other hand, if a HW could fight at LW with the same speed as a lightweight, but with the power of a HW, then he would likely win.

As you can see from the above examples, the P4P is an imaginary and subjective measurement.

In addition, lower weight classes seem to require more technical proficiency, whereas higher weight classes seem to sacrifice some technical proficiency for power. Not always, but often.

In order to measure P4P one must also consider the number and quality of opponents the P4P candidate has defeated. This too becomes a subjective morass for decision-making.

P4P lists DO identify many of the greatest fighters, but the sequence can vary considerably, and some deserving candidates are not even on the list.

There is a variation in experience also. What if a fighter is 7 -0 and another is 14-3. Which one is better? Are they MMA stats or pure UFC stats?

What happens if the fighters compared are in other promotions?

There is so much variability in factors and so much subjective judgement required, it is amazing that fans actually will wrangle on and on debating the list and its sequence--with such certainty.

I put P4P lists on the same level of reality as I do the Easter Bunny. I don't want to get rid of the tradition, but I am never so gullible as to believe that basket of chocolate eggs was delivered by a long-eared rodent.

belfort at number 2 middleweight says it all for me. a guy gets given a number one contender shot after being out for over a year and having only beaten lindland at mw recently. suddenly he's number 2, because the ufc says so? poor poor logic from people imo.

It makes perfect sense, as none of the guys between them are WW. Regardless P4P is an extreemely subjective ranking regardless. If it truly was Pound for pound talent, heavier guys would never make it on the list as there is more 'weight' to spread the 'talent' over.

Can't wait for Hominick to beat Aldo, Belfort to be Silva, Shields to beat GSP and Fedor to destroy Silva, so that Fedor will return to his proper place on the P4P.

WOW no love at all for JMMA. Aoki should be higher, even after that debacle on new years eve (which is not part of his MMA record). He's only lost to Melendez and Hansen at LW, and he's beaten TONS of great fighters. Kawajiri should be on there too. I know for a fact he would be a top contender in no time in the UFC or SF, probably has a better chance than Aoki in North America.

and what the hell, G-Sot is talented, but he hasn't beaten any top LW's, and for some f-ed up reason hes fighting another non-elite fighter.

WW is ok, MW is ok (except for Vitor), LHW is ok except gegrard has beat no good LHW's (even though I think he could), HW is a tough one, alot of people complain about Reem not fighting top guys, but alot of top HW's have only fought 1 or 2 good fighters, and even if you don't put Reem up there, your crazy if you don't think he would be a top contender in the UFC and most likely get the belt fast. P4P, there is no point debating that. I don't know why Aldo is always so high on the list. Who has he beat? Its not his fault that there are some great FW's in Japan and he hasn't faced some guys that he will soon, but honestly he is yet to beat the kind of guys that would put him in a #3 spot.

yeah i also noticed aoki's drop in the lightweight rankings after that hybrid rules fight. he got ko'd but it didn't take anything away from his mma record as it wasn't a proper mma fight.

Mousasi still so overrated. He lost CONVINCINGLY TO KING MO folks! He'd get absolutley crushed by the other 9 in the top 10 LHW top 10. Can you imagine what a Bader or Evans would do to him? Pure rape that's what. Get that guy out of there jeeeeeez

Well, cant really see why Wandy is even ranked now? Plus, why is Nogueira ranked 10th?

This is why these ranking dont work. People rank their favorite fighters, not the best.
