Junior dos Santos says he'll use his superior boxing skills to knockout Shane Carwin

Top Heavyweight contender Junior dos Santos, who will go head to head with Shane Carwin in the main event at UFC 131, discusses his opponent, as well as his gameplan for the bout.  Dos Santos acknowledges the threat Carwin presents in his hands, but says he will use his speed and superior boxing skills to score the knockout.

Dos Santos has been inactive since his dominant unanimous decision win over Roy Nelson in August.  Though the victory had earned him a shot at the Heavyweight title, division champ, Cain Velasquez, revealed that a shoulder injury would keep him sidelined for much of the year.  Instead of remaining idle, Dos Santos opted to take a coaching spot opposite Brock Lesnar on The Ultimate Fighter 13, who he would face for number one contender status.  When Lesnar then announced that he had once again been stricken with diverticulitis, Carwin stepped in, opening the door for two of the division's most dangerous strikers to square off at UFC 131. "I have to be careful with his hands because he has heavy hands. (But), I'm faster than him and I think I've got better stand-up skills than him.  I will try to use my speed to beat him.  I will try to keep this fight standing because I believe so much in my boxing skills and I think I can knock anybody out.  So, I will try to do that."

    I wonder why those allegations weren't talked about more.

    I definitely think JDS can use that speed like he says. It has been a long time since Carwin has fought though and he could be a completely different fighter.

    True. Carwin has only been out one month longer than JDS tho, so it should be fair on that front. And in regards to the allegations, he only turned up on a list that was allegedly of "PED" buyers. I'm not taking a side either way, but thats not really enough proof for anyone to pursue any type of action against him.

    @Joey

    If I remember right it was only his initials too. I'm not saying he did them but usually when allegations come up the witch hunt begins. In this case it just kind of disappeared which is strange for any sport.

    Yea, thats right.. It was only his initials with "MMA Fighter" or something to that effect written next to it. And I agree, I would have expected a much bigger backlash from that.

    yeah i can tell Dos Santos believes in his boxing and that's his main plan.

    Carwin's plan may be the ground and pound gameplan or to dirtybox like he did with Mir up against the cage.

    I cant wait for this, i like both fighters.

    Anything can happen but i think Dos Santos will take this.

    I think Carwin has this. Dos Santos hasn't fought such a big, powerful, and explosive wrestler. Shane is going gnp or push him against the fence and finish the fight. But anything can happen cant wait.

    @MMAW Ya I agree if Carwin was smart he would use his wrestling in this fight....y trade with some one who is known as a pure boxer?? even tho Carwin can KO anyone in the world the smart thing would b to play a safe fight n take it to the ground n earn the title shot

    Yup I'm on the fence with this one...very risky for Dos Santos though to stand, but yeah his right when he says thats his speed and striking is bettre...only problem is it hasnt really ko-ed opponents much in his last few outtings. his good at beating opponents to a pulp but he doesnt really possess good KO power, which carwin on the other hand does. Difficult to call, either dos santos but brutal beating, 2nd round tko maybe, or carwin with a 1st round ko. Like dos snatos though he really grew on me in tuf!

    Both fighters have lethal hands. I think JDS might be a little quicker with the trigger but Carwin has his wrestling. However, Carwin is coming into the fight a lot lighter. I can't wait to see what he will weigh in at. I like both these fighters and it's so hard to choose a winner.
