Jose Aldo's lack of "grappling conditioning" serves as a "huge confidence booster" for Chad Mendes
Posted on May 5, 2011, 12:40 AM by Joey Santosus"It's a completely different kind of conditioning when you're on the ground. His wrestling and grappling conditioning is not the same as his stand-up conditioning. Being explosive on the feet is different than grappling. I think that played a part in how tired he looked."
I just remember thinking, 'Wow. This isn't what I thought it was going to be,' That's really the only place I wanted to see this guy and getting to see it was a huge confidence booster for me. - For more from Chad Mendes on Jose Aldo, visit ESPN.com
Following Jose Aldo's successful title defense this past Saturday, UFC President Dana White revealed at the post-fight press conference in Toronto that the Brazilian's next challenger would likely be Team Alpha Male stand-out Chad Mendes. And it appears "Money" believes he's already found chink in the champ's armor.
Undefeated in his professional career, Mendes (10-0) made his octagon debut this past February, defeating Michihiro Omigawa via unanimous decision. Though not yet announced by the promotion, Aldo vs. Mendes is expected to be a part of the August 6th UFC 133 line-up from the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Hes gonna get KO'd
"this isnt what i thought it was going to be" that doesnt mean that is going to be that way with chad mendes i think hes in for a surprise
chad mendes next champ
An exhausted Aldo is still better than most of those guys.
I don't know that being "confident" that Aldo is going to gas is a good place to be.
Haha I agree with both of you! Everyone is confident I'm sure til they step in the cage with Aldo.
i just dont like chad mendes, personal preference, and he is boring as hell to watch
In order to test him on the ground and further, beat Aldo on the ground, you must first get him there.
And speaking as a fan of both Hominick and Aldo (I was pulling for MH), Mark didn't (finally) get Jose to the ground until JA clocked him with a wicked upper-cut and in going to the ground, Mark was lucky enough to grab a leg and secure a take-down. That is the only reason Mark was able to get it to the ground and my guess is, that Aldo being tired or gassed, was the only reason he was able to keep him there and even have / had a shot at ending that fight.
I saw nothing in that fight that should give anyone @ 145 confidence in fighting The Champ.
Watch the fight again. Hominick dominated the stand up more than once but got caught a couple of times and also his TD defense let him down. but watch the fight again if you really think people did not see weaknesses in Aldo's game. he did not gas btw, Hominick smashed his liver in round 2 which visibly slowed Aldo for the rest of the fight.
I'm sorry but I don't believe MH "dominated" the stand up. Yea he hit Aldo a few times but Aldo was landing the harder strikes and throwing with power for most of the fight.
another retarded post from azzkika
@ azz
Agreed - there were points, particularly in rounds 4 & 5 where Mark was doing well, landing shots and probably winning the round....until...Jose clocked him.
Every time I thought Mark was (just) starting to get it together and work his game, he got hammered. To that end, other than the last few minutes of the 5th, there was no point at which MH was dominating JA; regrettably.
I wanted Mark to win and even had a small wager on it that I lost, but even as a big fan I cannot, under any condition, say that Mark ever had Jose in trouble (aside from the end of the fight), let alone dominated him.
I feel ya man, but it just never happened; and I've watched the fight 4 times.
Cheers,

I offer some advice. If you are truly wanting someone to win.... never bet on them! Screws you everytime haha! Learned that one the hard way...
@ JPG
Doh! Now, you tell me.
The beating Hominick gave Aldo is probably the best thing that could have happened to Aldo.
In a pre fight interview Aldo was dismissive of Hominick to the point of ignorant arrogance which was an eye opener for me. Perhaps now he will take his opponents far more seriously. Despite how good he is Hominick exposed a few holes in his game (cardio, ground game) and Aldo needs to change his mentality to remain as champion for a long time, which he may well just do after the Hominick fight.
Dang does everyone think Mark gave Jose a beating on the ground? While watching it I never thought Aldo was in danger of being finished. It just looked like he was avoiding damage while waiting for the bell to ring.
Far from a "beating" IMO. Hominck was landing successfully, but he didn't even win the standup part of the fight.
That's what I saw too. Aldo was either catching a quick breather or eating clock. Hominick did have moments of dominance though. But no way was he ever winning. During the fight, he kept things close, at best.
@ JPG
I don't know that I'd call it a beating, but he was laying into him; that can't be denied. I gave him round 5. His greatest success (on top) were those body shots to the Aldo's ribs; those were hurting Jose. Mark's mistake, if one can call it that (for there is no way to know if he would have been successful) was when he moved away from those shots and started trying to get to Jose's head. Aldo blocked most, if not all of those, but the body shots were getting through. Had Mark stuck to that, picked up the pace on them, there is the "possibility" that the ref...might....might...have stopped the fight. That was the only chance Mark had (at that stage of the fight).
Concluding - there is a great deal for Mark to be proud of ( he didn't get KO'd or subbed and gave The Champ a run for his money) and a great deal of experience gained. And to the point, I can't wait for them to meet, again. I think Mark might have a better shot, second time round.
Cheers to you JPG,
Wing Chun
Hominick was never close to finishing but that round 5 he did give Aldo a beating. You don't have to be in danger of being finished to be getting a beating. If ya'll think Aldo was avoiding damage ya'll are blind or stupid.
@WingChun
Oh Mark definitely won the 5th and he had a great chance to finish but as he was on top I just never saw Aldo in true danger. I wasn't really worried because Aldo never looked worried. Jose just looked so tired and really lazy. If Mark had some more energy he might have got that finish. But.... then they have a push up contest! Haha that cracked me up.
Mendes is like a mini Fitch.
If he's thinking taking down Aldo will be a breeze, he better have an appetite for some vicious knees.
chad mendes is just another wrestler thats gonna get ktfo, just like the rest. hominick was a much more dangerous opponent for aldo than mendes will be
You guys do realize Mendes is an elite wrestler, right? And that wrestling seems to be crushing BJJ and Kickboxing at the moment? ...Or do you guys have a short memory?
From what I remember a week ago, Mark was a dead man walking. A couple of days later, Jose appears human and beatable.
Let's hope Aldo is putting alot of time and effort into his TDD, or he can kiss the title goodbye. Like someone stated above, Chad is the Featherweight version of Jon Fitch -- which is also why people call him 'boring'.
He's no Jon Fitch. He's a better athlete, possibly stronger for his size, more explosive, and his hands are really coming along.
I agree. Before the fight, Aldo was an unbeatable god.
After the fight, he was a great champion, but human.
Uriah Faber and Mike Brown are way better fighters then Mendes.... Mendes will definitely do way better then them
