Jorge Santiago in talks with the UFC, says Nothing Official

Contrary to recent reports, former Sengoku Middleweight Champion Jorge Santiago has refuted claims that he has signed on with the UFC.  While Santiago has confirmed, with, that he is, in fact, engaged in ongoing negotiations with the promotion, he said he has not put pen to paper with any organization at this point.

Santiago’s first run with the UFC was cut short after going 1-2, winning his debut before being knocked out in his next two bouts against Chris Leben and Alan Belcher.  Since his brief stint with the promotion, the American Top Team product has went 11-1, most of which were fights under the Japanese organization Sengoku.  Santiago (23-8) captured the Sengoku Middleweight title in 2009, defeating Kazuo Misaki via technical submission.  Their rematch, this past August, was considered by many the best fight of 2010.  Santiago was released from Sengoku upon request and has since expressed interest in signing with a major American promotion such as the UFC or Strikeforce.

News that he has yet to sign with the promotion also contradicts the various sites who have suggested a bout between Santiago and Brian Stann has been set for UFC 130 in May.  And though nothing is official at this time, Santiago remained optimistic, adding that he hopes to finalize a deal any day now.
